Why is the club to blame ?
Because the culture and organisation of our club is f**ked to the point that junior players do not believe the vision for the future we are putting forward and would rather go elsewhere. Thats why the club is to blame.

If we had good management, leaders, culture - players would be clamoring to get to our club, not looking for the nearest exit

Russell and Dunster would be on f**k all, Dunster is MO, so could be even very low.

We were willing to pay Talagi $500k, so we have some money spare for 1 more decent back.
Dunster was expected to be top 17 when he signed his current contract. The MO (if activated by him) would be much less. Russell probably isn’t on top 17 money but probably on the amount you’d pay your fifth best outside back. So yes we would have what we offered Talagi, but that could’ve been heavily back ended to reflect the fact we already have three backline spine players contracted for 2025.

But isn't the difference that if there was no PO for 2025 and just a normal contract, other clubs wouldn't have been allowed to make approaches to him until Nov 1 this year? Instead, the terms of the PO in this case allowed him to opt out of his option earlier in the year, after he had made his debut and looked decent, and so it became a free for all. A normal contract would have given the club the luxury of being able to upgrade/extend him based on his promising first grade performances without having to compete with other clubs...
If you are talking about Talagi, no. Without a PO other clubs could have started talking to him in Nov 2023 as his contract expires Nov '24. The PO gave us more time to try and keep him which we did by 1) putting him in FG and 2) giving him an offer higher than the PO in November last year. He sat on that and decided to do nothing until the PO lapsed, at which time he was then able to talk to other clubs - note, he could have rejected the PO earlier but by not doing that he was able to display his talent in FG for longer and thus potentially attract more interest from other clubs.
