Super Impose, what a champion!!
Yeh, I went to the 1991 Epsom Hcp when he won coming down the inside for once carrying 61kg I think.

Merkins, why don't racing enthusiasts refer to times by these horses ? For example the times run by Super Impose aint that flash compared to the rest. In fact the horse who won the 2001 race totally carved them.

Secretariat ran 1 1/2 miles in 2:24 flat which shits over our horses.

Please explain.

This is a complex question to be able to answer, but in simple terms race tactics are very different for each and every race and there are a number or variables (track conditions, weights of each horse, racing styles of each horse are just a few) that determine how fast a race is fun.

For instance Iglesia still holds the Flemington track record for the 1200m, but I doubt Iglesia would ever beat Black Caviar even on his best day. A horse like Black Caviar would run whatever time is required to win the race on that day, there's no extra prizemoney for doing it faster than anyone else has.

Horse Racing is a bit like middle distance athletics, its more about tactics of all the competitors than who can run the fastest.

Secretariats time would have been on dirt, which you can probably generally do quicker than on a grass track

Because comparing times over different surfaces (e.g. dirt/turf), track layouts (sharpness of turns etc), conditions (good/dead/heavy), field size, pace, and weight carried is pretty pointless. Race times are useful, but only part of the story.

Why the obsession with how fast they can run anyway? Why is there no industry surrounding how much horses can deadlift or whatever?

There is (well not "deadlift", but "whatever"), it's called equestrian, where they can run, jump, as well as prance around and look pretty.

Times aren't the be all and end all, Super carried the Grandstand to win his 4th group 1 Randwick mile coming from last. Times depend on track conditions, pace of the race and other factors. Doesn't mean he wasn't a champion.
