Could be that we wouldn't offer top 17 in 2020 whereas the Tigers said they would if he could get us to release him. Obviously signing with them for 2021 could motivate us to let him go now.
What motivation would there be in releasing him early, other than opening up a development spot. Is there anyone else beating down the door to be promoted?

Depends how many merkins we want to put on development contracts. At the moment we have three spots free, but there's a few lads training with the NRL squad right now who are presumably only on part time contracts.

So we have even less incentive to release him early if we still have spaces free in the development squad. We keep him for a year on f**k all ($60k), limit the development of a merkin who will potentially be our opponent next year and we can use him in first grade from round 17 if need be.

It’s no brainer territory for mine.

That’s a little short sighted. If we rated him we would have wrapped him up earlier. He’s been committed all through his junior years. If his management have secured a lucrative offer then let him fly and focus on another junior or recruit someone else’s talent.

Well I agree but I think in previous years we've kept a couple of spots unfilled.
Someone needs to have a word with O'Neill. I think he's awake now.

I’d keep him and then when possible either play him every single minute every game or put him on bench but never give him a run

I saw some pretty sweet tries when I was playing five-eighth, usually after some merkin ran over the top of me.

Barry Rushworth told me this story once

"People ask me what number did Reg Gasnier wear? I tell them Number 3. How do you know that? Because I had to turn and chase the merkin all the time"
and yes he did use that word for merkin
