The NRL Tackle: Parramatta Eels coach Brad Arthur under fire after South Sydney defeat

After yet another mystifyingly poor performance from his Eels, it’s coming to a point where Brad Arthur needs to justify he’s the man to end Parramatta’s epic premiership drought.

Lost in the celebration of Latrell Mitchell’s stunning return for South Sydney was the fact this was another serious setback for Parramatta’s premiership campaign.
And Brad Arthur just can’t continue to escape scrutiny for these ridiculously inconsistent performances that are tearing apart the Eels’ best chance to win a title in more than a decade.

We’ve seen over the weekend how Justin Holbrook is the latest NRL coach fighting to save his job with Gold Coast on the bottom of the ladder and going backwards fast.

But for different reasons Arthur’s position is also coming to that point where he needs to justify that he can be the man who can lead this club to that long awaited premiership.

And it’s no good having a team capable of beating heavyweights Penrith and Melbourne when they can’t back it up against the Bulldogs and Wests Tigers, or a Souths team that was admittedly pumped by Latrell’s return but nevertheless humiliated in their most recent game against St George Illawarra.

You also can’t ignore this is Arthur’s ninth season and Parra are yet to make it past week two of the finals on his watch.

Arthur said after the game that effort wasn’t the issue against Souths.

But how does he say that when in the next breath he pretty much blamed the performance on a lack of effort from certain individuals, saying “on different weeks we’ve got different blokes owning their jobs”.

Is Brad Arthur the right man to lead Parramatta in their search for an NRL premiership? NRL Imagery

The fact is it is all just a cop out, because it was obvious to all from the opening exchanges that the Eels just didn’t turn up with the right attitude – and it has been their ongoing issue all season.

But just like the players Arthur needs to take accountability for his part because it is a coach’s job to get them ready to play.

Probably the most accurate article I’ve seen about us.

may as well say 50% possession and still did feck all 12 points for 50%
Except we are averaging 52% this year from an 81% completion rate. I've explained why possession (and completion rate) is so important to our team (you can see it why when we have to defend). So yesterday's poor completion rate hurt us badly.

Against Souths we completed 70% and had 46% possession. This despite only four offloads. We were previously averaging 13 per game. With no offloads we're not attacking to our strengths, and with such a low completion rate we were giving the opposition too much ball for our sluggish big defenders to cope with.

Because owning your job isn't just about effort. Two of our senior players decided to take the easy option late in the first half when Paulo threw a hospital pass to Moses who also decided to make it somebody else's problem instead of taking the hit. The result was Alex Johnstone's intercept and a 12 point lead. Both Paulo and Moses f**ked up there. Neither should have thrown the pass, but effort wasn't the problem.

Well here you go…this is an article for fans who use players as scapegoats. Who says I’m not balanced.

Cooper Cronk… FMD did he actually make a point in that rambling?
I think BA is wrong but. It isn’t individual accountability in the sense that some players weren’t putting in effort around line speed, etc. because quite plainly none of them were. The lacking accountability was around those in the team meant to be driving those effort areas. There was no one looking to rush up to meet them, or even if there was, there certainly wasn’t the next tackle.

None of us know how much he signed for. Why would you think it's overs when you think we lowballed all the players we lost?
Because he didn't also leave...? There's a Gutho shaped hole in the Dolphins' top 17 so far, and I can't believe his bend-us-over-a-barrell-through-the-media manager didn't at least extract some other offer.

He lives in Sydney. I personally wouldn’t leave the city my family is happy in for an extra 25%

When you don't turn up mentally and therefore your effort is way down on where it should be, then all those other things that go wrong in the game that you are referring to start to multiply and your game falls apart. Then dumb, dumbs like yourself see the missed tackles, wayward passes, lack of offloads, losing the ruck and less possession, which are the symptoms and result of not putting in the effort, as the problem and highlight them.

But basically we weren't switch on and the coach is struggling to work out how to fix us.

I think half the problem was that those panic passes stuck in the first half V The Brave Chooks.
If we could sort our D Im confident consistency will follow. That said our D has been inconsistent for years so my hopes arent high.

Our defence has been shit on the edges because we replaced a poor defender on the wing (Ferguson) with another one (Simonsson).

No. Overlaps are being created. Souths would spread and have numbers. The winger is left with 2 men running at him. The space has already been made. The winger either rushes up and hopes to force an error or get his fingers to the ball or he sits back and the centre doesn't pass and goes in untouched meaning no chance of an error or saving the try. Rushing up gives you atleast some chance of them choosing the wrong execution or getting a finger to the pass.
The issue if our choices on when to rush up and when to slide and also letting sides set up for the spread and allowing a fast play the ball.
Give them a fast play the ball when they don't want them. But when they are setting up for the strike play is when you must hold them down. It's what the good sides do. Reefs will generaly let you get away with one every set. But when you try it on a few times they will pin you.

Both our wingers are really bad at this. A lot of the tries scored on our wings are because they have made the decision to rush in on the centre, leaving the opposing winger unmarked, when our centre had already released from the inside player and would have made the tackle on the opposing centre in time

I feel like our wingers jamming is actually our system. It relies on the centre and half then wrapping behind to mop up if they f**k it up. It's obviously not working like it should.
