Lane...
Shaun Lane has given Parramatta an early grand final boost after it emerged that the flying Eels forward was on the verge of agreeing a long-term deal to stay at the club.

Lane is off contract at the end of next season but News Corp can reveal he is set to extend his stay at the Eels until the end of 2026 in a deal that is likely to be worth close to $2 million.

His retention will be a massive fillip for the club as they look to end a 36-year premiership drought on Sunday night at Accor Stadium against bitter western Sydney rivals Penrith.

Lane has been one of the form forwards of the finals series, putting himself in contention to make the Kangaroos squad for the upcoming Wold Cup.

He did his cause no harm with his display against North Queensland in Townsville on Saturday night - Lane ran for 135 metes, recorded four offloads and contributed an all-important try assist as Parramatta triumphed against the Cowboys.

His decision to stay at Parramatta comes as the Eels attempt to stem the bleeding from their grand final squad - they have already lost hooker Reed Mahoney and back rower Isaiah Papali’i for next season, although whispers continue that the latter is desperate to stay at the Eels rather than join the Wests Tigers.

The Eels have a slew of players who are off contract at the end of 2023, meaning they are able to sign with rival clubs on November 1.

The list is headed by halves Dylan Brown and Mitchell Moses, have been the masterminds of Parramatta’s grand final charge. Both will be hot property should they hit the market on November 1.

Jake Arthur, Waqa Blake, Bryce Cartwright, Will Penisini, Bailey Simonsson and Maika Sivo also enter the final year of their contracts at the end of next month, leaving Parramatta racing the clock to tie down their grand final squad.

The good news is they have locked up Lane. The Eels could ill-afford to lose the hard-charging back rower and they have seemingly done enough to convince him to stay as he prepares to pledge his future to the club.

At some point next season he will bring up 100 games for the Eels, having started his career at Canterbury before moving to Manly. He has now played four seasons at Parramatta and provided he stays injury-free, could surpass 200 games for the club thanks to a fresh three-year extension.

possibly offload Nathan Brown and try and work something out with the Tigers assuming Papali’i wants to renege and stay.
There were rumours of Nathan Brown to Tigers a month or two ago... maybe it's part of working something out around Papali'i backing out after Maguire's sacking?

We might need to pay some/all of Brown's 2023 wage if he was to leave us early, and somehow still be able to afford to keep Papali'i... seems tricky.

He’s a great re-signing. Possibly the most improved player in the NRL.

Need to tie down our halves, possibly offload Nathan Brown and try and work something out with the Tigers assuming Papali’i wants to renege and stay.
We are pretty lucky Nrown is only signed for next year so all contract negotiations wouId be based on him not being here 2023 onwards, if he leaves, we have a bonus of extra cap space….

Yet if the rabbits in charge listened to me after that first trial they extend him before season kick off for 200k less.
Nice to signed but once again we sign a player when in peak form at top dollar.

Mate after the first trial I could see how much more agile he was and predicted he'd have a HUGE year.

Yes. It's a shame he isn't at his 500k form cause him off the bench this week as that player would be a huge bonus.

Powerful millionaires need to be listened too.

They waited for Matterson,Gutherson and Lane to hit peak form then paid them the top dollar and same looks to.be happening with D.Brown and Moses.
Dylan should of been given a 5yrs contract last year tbh.

Front loading FTW baby!!

If so, and he is on 2mill until 2026, it is a complete bargain.

It is a bargain even if the 2mill is a 3 year extension (provided Lane's form holds up)
And it is a huge incentive for Dylan Brown to sign as well. They make each other better.

(Same with Moses and Papa - which is why Papa wants to backflip. His performances when Moses is out say something)

It wasn’t long go that they were getting into each others way. Both Dylan and Shauno have improved so much. Gee Lane’s speed over 15m and PCM vs Cows was exceptional.

This sounds good in theory, but doesn't always work in practice. The Manager will push for more money even if the player is under a long term contract, and the player gets the shits with being paid a lot less after a while and wants to leave. Look at the situation with Haas at the Broncos, even Ponga at Newcastle due to his contract setup.

This then causes issues with your cap management once you have to pay them more, because you have budgeted for those players for a lot less.
