Has anyone actually listened to the Cleary interview?

There is zero suggestion he was signed for a minimum contract, here 24 min mark:

all Cleary said "he was surprised they could sign"....there is nothing else. Happy to be corrected @Chipmunk if there something a bit "clearer".....

All the media reports suggest he signed for close to double the minimum, as reported by 2 jorno's/organisations:

$225k:

"Paul Alamoti heads west from Canterbury for roughly half the $450,000 of his most recent Canterbury contract."

$250k

"Alamoti is reportedly playing on just $250,000, which is half of what he was on at the Bulldogs."

Obviously, our backs depth was pretty average, no question! Obviously Alamoti would have been a handy signing on $250k.

No idea reasons we didn't look at him, maybe we did, maybe we didn't. But don't know why there has to be bulllshit about his panthers contract when all indications are it wasn't a minimum....

I don't know why anyone would answer or ask a question of Pou anymore.... it's going to go around in circles like it always has...
It will until merkins can link the evidence to their argument. Supposedly Cleary has told us all we need to know about how much our fourth choice centre Morgan Harper was getting paid.

Maybe Barrett unlocked our attack

We went from averaging 3.2 tries ppg under Arthur to 4.92 tries ppg under Barrett.

My maths has that averaging 1.72 tries ppg better off.
Barrett has been our attack coach since the grand final. We score more tries at the expense of completion rates, which has negatively impacted our defence in that time.

$250k is what you’d pay your fourth or fifth best outside back, and we already had Sean Russell. Behind him we had minimum salary nuffies Harper and Cini, plus Talagi. And then there’s Dunster who is getting paid based on his ability before snapping every ligament in his knee.

Cleary doesn’t know anything about what Harper was getting paid. How much did he say they were paying Alamoti?

I was simply comparing our club’s poor decision to buy Harper when we easily could have signed Alamoti, who was bought for a bargain – that’s a fact. Don’t try to make this about Harper. I could provide proof from the ATO and a statutory declaration from Alamoti, and you’d still question it, you stubborn dickhead.

Does anyone else think Ryles has someone big for 25 if Gutho leaves? I’m all for doing the right thing by Gutho, and love Ryles not panicking to re offer him anything until we see where the chips fall early 25 but you can only front load contracts so much, so there doesn’t seem much point unless he is confident he can back fill and backfill well.

I reckon young Ryles is like a duck on water…

He’d likely wouldn’t come cheap but we owe Dogs for Mortimer, I’d target Alamoti.
All I can say is it’s too bad that people laughed at me for suggesting this back in May 2023

For all the Paul Alamoti fans, have you seen some of his defensive reads and he hasn't shown anything like Averillo has attack or speed and footwork wise? Not saying he won't improve, I mean he is only 19 years old and playing in the same crap team that Averillo is, but just because he is bigger and stronger then Averillo doesn't mean he will be better long term. Might be, but might not. Both these players have question marks over their futures that's why the Dogs have chosen to add two new centres to their squad for next season. But on potential Averillo and maybe Alamoti are better then anything we currently have at our club and should not break the bank.

Like I said though, their defensive weaknesses would be significantly improved upon in a better all round team. I just tend to think when you have great speed it is way easier to adjust and recover and we also are lacking that blistering kind of speed which I would love us to have again. It would make such a difference to our attack and give our playmakers a new option to work with that we haven't had for years. I see Alamoti as being no faster than what we already have.

Harper didn’t stop us signing Alamoti. We still had four top 30 spots available.

So why couldn’t we sign Alamoti? Could be that there were too many players ahead of him:

Penisini
Simonsson
Sivo
Russell
Talagi
Dunster (whether he is worth what he’s on is beside the point; his salary is taking up space in the cap that could be spent on other outside backs)

But also, just because Alamoti signed for Penrith for $250k (if true) doesn’t mean he would sign for Parra for the same amount. What is he worth to us? His defence is poor, and not what we needed to improve our team.

I would like to think he has someone pretty good lined up for 2025 to cover any injury in the spine.

As i said the other night Dylan Brown's potential ticking time bomb with that ACL makes it almost negligent we let Gutho go any earlier then 2026.

Imagine worst case scenario Drown goes down in the first 6-8 weeks. And we let Gutho go for 2025.

Moses will be stuck with Iongi a rookie FB, Hawkins a backup 5/8 and Hands/Lussick in the spine playing with him.

Like poor Mitchell can't do it all on his own.

At least Gutho could fill in 5/8 and gives us better flexibility if worse case we lose Drown early.

Yes you can't control injuries but we can control the squad we have at our disposal for 2025.

You’re deflecting again and going around in circles and as @The Colonel politely hinted, you can get f**ked.

TheRam is right, and Alamoti’s missed tackles this year prove it. He’s fine when he gets defensive help from the inside, improving from 80% to 83% (still poor) at Penrith. But our defence this year was even worse than last year and our edges suffered. The two specialist centres in the squad both saw declines in their tackle effectiveness. Alamoti was poor at Penrith. He would’ve been a disaster at Parramatta.

I also like the idea of having Gutho around mentoring Iongi for a year.

Hawkins was a very astute back up signing. He can play and is actually better than Sanders.
