Not that I think this should have been the next team admitted, but I don’t see how tax breaks will make that much of a difference. They will still have to go and spend a huge amount of their time in Port Moresby, which would be unattractive to most players.
If they thought it was difficult attracting players to the Raiders because of their location, this would be even harder.
Still though clubs are going to lose crucial players because the Albos can offer tax breaks.

How is that fair. Makes a complete mockery of the comp.

I'll use Hopgood for example if the PNG Albos and Parra both offer him 550k the same amount on the cap.

Its not really the same amount he gets tax free money for the Albos or stays at Parra and has to pay a shit load of tax which would be considerably amount less.

Its not an even playing field.

Parra basically have to offer another 150-200k to compete.

PNG will sign players so some clubs are going to lose out unfairly due to an uneven playing field.

Clubs will still lose players because there will be another team to fill. Would be the same if it was Perth or somewhere else.

They will still have to live in Port Moresby. Most likely in a compound. How many of the players’ wives and partners want to go live over there. If they do it will probably be for a year or two, then they leave.

I honestly don’t see how this is going to work, but the tax system is the least of my worries.

The PNG Albos how long will they last ???

At least the NRL can not deny anymore the salary cap isn't compromised in the comp now with the Tax Free money for players to sign while the 17 other clubs are on a different budget where players are restricted by paying tax.

Good luck to PVL he has milked some coin off the government for the code but with the Albos coming in they will be nothing more then a joke of the competition.
This was first discussed when the Sharkies PM had the keys. It has been gaining momentum since before covid when China had been romancing the Soloman Islands. Now, China are firmly entrenched within the Solomons.

You can rant about it all you like, but it had to happen.

If you don't get it, then I guess you don't get it.

Peter Dutton has expressed his support for the initiative, recognizing the positive impact it will have on the relationship between Australia and PNG, as well as the benefits for rugby league in the region.

I think they should've pushed for a 2nd Q Cup team and maybe allocate one of the dev spots at each club to be a PNG junior for a few years prior to their admission into 1st grade. Build up the number of professional/semi pro players coming out of PNG. Maybe some make 1st grade at existing clubs, maybe some just return to PNG to play in local comps or Q Cup increasing the level of competition there.
The work they're doing over there with Joey Grima in the juniors seems to be going well. They're only one off games but they've had some good results at schoolboys level against Aus the last 2 years.
They're going to struggle to attract players from outside of PNG on anything other than a short term contract (if they can even get them across on that) so will need to fill most positions with locals.

League fans in WA have good reason to be shitty about this as well.

Perth Red may have caused himself some harm after reading this.
It is my understanding that WA will be announced soon and they will start 2027.

BTW, I know I guy ..... who knows a guy ..... they are part of the NZ2 consortium. Have buckets of cash and are backed by high net worth individuals and said he heard the tea lady say to the mail boy that someone might have said to the uber driver that the impression was the PVL didn't really have an appetite for a second NZ team.

Why is whenever someone expresses an opinion on here you don't agree it gets called a rant.

My post wasn't a rant it was an opinion and i think i speak for 90% of people in the game that agree the PNG Albos are a joke.

I know why there coming into comp its to stop China having an influence around the pacific region.

Doesn't mean i agree with the fact we need to basically destroy the integrity of our sporting competition that we all love for it to happen.

But anyway it is what it is.

Put it this way the challenge to win a premiership has just become a whole lot harder because it will be the small clubs that will get cherry picked apart a little bit more eating away into the depth of squads.

How good a team do you reckon the Raiders would have if the players weren't paying any tax?

Ok, yeah - take back my cheeky comment.

I don't like her music, but she is a good woman.

Way to go, Tay Tay!

Closest thing I can think of was the late, great Leonard Cohen - not only would be play for 3 straight hours, but he would introduce his band members one by one to the crowd, and now to them. Such a class act.

But Taylor Swift has my respect. A classy human being, and she deserves her success.
Look at all the Swifties here!!!
In hindsight Parra would be my pick for most Swifties

Thank you for your concise explanation of how tax works.

Definitely agree it will be tough, especially at the beginning.

However PNG has a population of nearly 10 million or so. That's a huge catchment area. The biggest in the NRL.

If the right development systems are put in place (and I think that's where a lot of the money is meant to go), after 8-10 or so years, they should be fairly self sufficient and not need to be recruiting a lot of players. Even having a player surplus for the rest of the NRL.

The Raiders didn't have too much trouble attracting players in the 80's.
Maybe if they were a more successful club, it wouldn't be an issue for them.
A bit like us.
