What Ryles DID do was move the guy on (with his salary), and spend it elsewhere.
That is quite different to playing him out of position while still at the club.
(the conversation he had about a different position could also be for what purpose?)

TIGERS OFFER SULLIVAN $900,000 TO LEAVE CLUB


The Tigers are reportedly willing to give halfback Jayden Sullivan $900,000 to leave the club just one year into his four year deal with the club. The Daily Telegraph reported the Tigers are prepared to give Sullivan a monster pay out from his $2.4 million contract in order to free up salary cap space. Sullivan joined the Tigers on a four-year deal to be the club’s halfback, but played just eight games last season and lost all but one of the games he played in.

The Daily Telegraph reported Sullivan has joined the Rabbitohs after doing a medical with Souths last week, despite having three years on his $700,000 a season Tigers deal remaining.

Previously the Tigers had been willing to pay $900,000 or $300,000 a season for the remaining three years of Sullivan’s deal for him to play elsewhere.

However, Sullivan’s Souths deal is unique in that he will play for the club in 2025, but has the flexibility to rejoin the Tigers in 2026.

But Sullivan also has an option to stay at Souths in 2026 if he chooses with all the power in the young halfback’s court.

Sullivan had signed a four year deal to join the Tigers last season from after switching from the Dragons.

Ryles never moved Gutho on.

Ryles never told Gutho he was free to leave. He could have at this meeting, if he was planning to move Gutho on:

1. They overpay for middling talent, because nobody else wants to play there.
2. Then they try to promote as many juniors as possible, so that in the future they can be more competitive.
3. Sometimes the juniors path is blocked by the overpaid middling talent, so they pay them to play elsewhere to make a spot for the junior.
4. The juniors are initially cheap, so it doesn't matter that they are paying middling talent to play elsewhere.
5. Young players don't win much, and so because they don't have enough good players, they lose games, and the juniors want to play elsewhere.
6. They need to try and win games, so they overpay for middling talent (see the first step again)

I know its a cool here to stick it into your fellow spoon bowl combatants in a massive case of cognitive dissonant deflection, but IMO this is pretty much a good deal for Sullivan and WT. Probably as good as it gets.

When the Tigers signed Bud, the Tigers had just won their second consecutive spoon and had lost Luke Brooks. We were looking at going into our third spoon defence with Will Smith and Brandon Wakeham as our first choice halves. tough decisions were made. At this time Lachlan Galvin was 16, Latu Fainu was a 16yo playing for Blacktown and Luai had just won his third ring.

Sullivan was a necessary panic buy and with subsequent emergence of Galvin, Latu & the signing of Luai, he is now superfluous to requirements on too much money but not unreasonable money for a first grade halfback. Despite this he has never not put in, has played well in reggies and trained hard. In his few opportunities in first grade he played pretty good, better than Brooks, Smith and Wakeham and proved himself a worthy first grade halfback. he finds himself in a weird situation now at the worst team in the comp with at least two excellent halves ahead of him. I genuinely hope the best for him.

This weird deal gives him a chance to progress to first grade and make a career for himself. It also give the Tigers an insurance policy with Galvin & Luai (at this stage) both having options for 2027 to have a first grade halfback with two years experience under Bennett to come back.

Gutho and the Dragons are going to struggle I think this year.

Talagi is interesting he is coming back from surgery now will he play round 1 will he be jumped by Cole?

Sanders right now is playing in CUP for the Raiders should have signed to play backup for us will only get a go if there is an injury
