If not for their appealing and marketable mascot, the Tigers would have been written off long ago. At their best, they’re a mirage, and their partnership with the Magpies was always a doomed venture.
Fitzy wanted to join with Balamin after SL.

Thank christ Balmain's ego at the time didn't want to be ones pegged in the relationship.

So they decided to peg Wests instead.

And we all live happy ever after

He was pushing The Parramatta Panthers at one stage as well. He couldn't guarantee The Eels survival. That was the last straw for Fitzy.

Sacking Smith in late 05 with a potato like Hagan should have been the last straw. His logic was he beat us in 01 and he must be able to coach. He also got the spoon in 05.

We get the right coach and we may win a comp with what Smith left and we may not slide so badly. Disgraceful decision.

History suggests otherwise.

Wait - history says the Balmain guys are smarter?
The guys who managed to not have anyone on the board?

The brains of the Wests dudes only have to be relatively smarter than the Balmaon dudes. That they hold all the cards might indicate they're winning that count.

PS: your average crowds at Leichardt are 12.6k and 11.8k at Campbelltown (100 games at each). There isn't much in it. You average 22k at Stadium Australia (50 games) - might as well move there?!?
Oh wait - have you seen your crowd average in NZ? 25k. Maybe the dudes wanting to move over there are smart after all (but it is just 2 games there)

I've listened to some podcasts lately with guys from the panthers set up like Matt Cameron and Lee Hopkins. It's really hard listening to them rave about the set up at parra during the Smith period.

Happy new year, people!

Also, question to anyone who may know - is there something in the Blue Wiggle's contract that says he needs to be mindlessly pretending to be strumming a guitar on every YouTube video?

Every time we click on a Wiggles video, there he is, fake playing. It's so annoying.

Hagan knew what it took to win a premiership. Maybe Fitzgerald figured Smith had done as much as he could for the club? In hindsight we know that Smith just overachieved (fairly consistently) with some average and above average squads. But Fitzgerald might’ve just thought they were gun sides that Smith was holding back. Much like the perception of the Eels under Brad Arthur’s.

Really smart to hire Hagan, who didn’t want to relocate and finished most training sessions early so he could get on the freeway back to Newcastle. Rarely attended non NRL games and remained a Newcastle boy his whole time at Parra. .Wasn’t a sensible appointment by any measure.

Why bring up your butt buddy Bwad??? Any chance you get to slobber on Baldies knob you don't miss out.

Smith's time was done but to sack him pre season was ridiculous and wasted a season with a very strong squad. The problem was replacing him with Hagan who was utter garbage without the GOAT playing for him.

I suppose back in 2005 contracts still meant something unlike today but telling Smith in November 2005 his contract wasn't going to be extended should have just meant they sack him on the spot.

As harsh as it may have been the 2005 preliminary final debacle was the final straw in a long list of big game shitting the bed performances under Smith.

Should have ended it there and then.

2006 as you say was wasted because we kept Smith on and by mid season everyone had enough of each other.

The same reason we bring up other former coaches like Smith (who also got us to a grand final) and Hagan (who didn’t).

These men are all members of the Eels family, who were here for some good wins. Credit where it’s due.

Utter garbage? He won 51% of games at our average club.
