So after losing reed, ice, marata, Oregon, stone, opacic and signing moses, brown, matterson, penisini to optioned contracts on unders. Then over the next two offseasons we can only attract hogdson, hopgood (a cup player) Moimoisea, murchie, Doorey and the following season kelma and harper.

Was it good cap management to have "reed, ice, marata, Oregon, stone, opacic" on unders for a year or two? Eventually the salary cap came for us and took some of our players and made us upgrade the rest. The problem was we didn't have enough youngsters coming through the pathways due to going into administration and Covid putting the PLC on life support. Our pathways only just recovered in 2023.

In a rising salary cap, the best players would be very wary of locking themselves into long contracts. Which is exactly what we see. Penrith don't have a single player contracted for 2029, and only four players contracted for 2028:

Edwards, McLean, McLean and Tago. Edwards will be 32 that year.

But they also barely loose anyone that important for the next 2 seasons. So whilst 2025 will be tough by 2026 3 or 4 more young kids may come thru and back in top 4.

I think that was part of it, although I agree that it is a somewhat flawed approach. Maybe there will also be fan pressure from other clubs keen to sign him?

Who knows, but if he didn't want it in the media he would have been more judicious with how he shopped Dylan around.

It's the competitiveness lifecycle for a mid-tier club. In a good year we challenge for the title and in a bad year we challenge for the spoon. Most years it's somewhere in between.
