But I thought POs lowered a players asking price????

And it wasn't an add on to get the deal done.

I'm confused

They could do one of two things:
1. Give the player extra insurance meaning they will take a lower pay rate per year, or

2. Offer a sweetener for a high-profile player to sign on with a club, whilst still paying the high rate.

I would think the former would be taken up by younger players or older players who are at risk of injury.
The latter would be taken by big name players in their prime, like Luai.

Our recruitment has been gash since 2021. We generally had the same squad in 22 as we did in 21 except Simmonson was added.

We have lost a bunch of players, re signed some really good ones and recruited no one of note for 2023/24.

Do you think we got the sort of cap relief from POs that has been claimed in this forum???

I'm sceptical

Imagine how much he would've wanted without the PO.
Well @emjaycee has some idea and it appears there was no bargain price for Dylbro. Similar to Munster, 50% more than Ezra Mam, slightly more than Dearden , more than Burton , appears obviously signed on potential at pretty big dollars and defence. That is on our negotiating skills and how the player manager expressed interest in the player and interest. Not sure we did that well at the time.

Seems some players will work a loyalty discount into their negotiations, ummm.

Pure speculation.

There is no evidence to show POs reduce a players asking price.

Just look at the players the eels have recruited since 2022. A big bunch of nobodies,
Current Aus rep and 2024 most improved player Zac Lomax?
Albeit past their primes but former rep players Josh Addo-Carr & Joe Ofahengaue?
J’Maine Hopgood being selected for Origin after he played for us?
Absolute nobodies

Mate, my previously quoted numbers were all made up, to show an example of how/why we are seeing his manager put an asking price into the market.

For all I know Dylan is currently earning $500k and his PO is for $550k per year.

It's the only reason clubs would agree to them. Unless you think there is zero risk to the club. They're not going to take on extra risk for zero benefit.

Because all the players that were on unders from 2019 to 2022 (when we made the finals four straight years, for the first time since 2002) wanted upgrades after 2022. That's why we signed nobody of note. Because we didn't have the cap space for more good players. We actually struggled to keep the ones we had, who were previously on unders.

Gee, can’t even trust respected posters like yourself, that’s sad. At least we know Pou makes everything up.

Having said that, somehow it was reported across numerous media that Dylbro wasn’t being paid cheaply, some journos could apparently have contacts 🤔

Harper
Kelma
Moimoisea
Murchie
Doorey
Hodgson at the twightlight of his career
Asi

Hopgood came as a cup player

Joe O would have had portion of his salary covered by the Tigers

Lomax is the exemption but he probably sold himself a bit cheap given how good he was this year.

The Panthers also recruited poorly while their team was at its peak. They bolstered their losses (due to the salary cap) with internal promotions. We didn't have the same quality of youngsters coming through until this year, as @hindy111 told us a couple of years ago. 2025 is when they would be ready for first grade. Obviously three of the little merkins f**ked off to chase the money, because our best players were blocking two of them, and one was pissed because his dad got the arse.

Meanwhile the Tigers recruit big names every year because they are clearing a lot of cap space every year. We have just done the same, and our recruitment has suddenly improved. You can't recruit without cap space.

There is no way to know how much cap space was saved by offering player options instead of more money. But the fact is POs have value to players (or no players would have them) and add risk to clubs (or every player would have them). Therefore they are exchanged for something else. That something else could only be salary that is counted under the cap. Clubs that don't need to offer POs either have some other way of compensating players outside the cap, or they are already in a strong position relative to the rest of the market and don't gain the same net benefit from increasing risk.

Nobody here knows how much these merkins are on, and the people who might know either have no reason to tell us (e.g. club officials) or have no reason to be honest (e.g. journalists).

As for making up details, it's the only way to demonstrate theories of how things could be happening behind the scenes. emjaycee and many others understand this. You (and many others) obviously don't.
