The length of some of the extensions circa 2022 and 2023 was raising some eyebrows. Lane, Matto and Sivo's for example...

probably not enough eyebrows.

Lane ended up being the great con job, his form in 22 almost warranted an Australian jersey and he would of made an origin team post GF.

Matto, was an origin player that year and whilst Sivo didn't have a great year he still had a decent strike rate with 13 tries in 16 games. the next 2 seasons he notched up 37 tries in 32 games.

The response was poor for the same reason we lost those players in the first place; salary cap pressure.

in anyones language, signing a bloke like Jirah in August 22 on a multi year deal was a ridiculously poor recruitment choice, as was replacing the outside backs we had with Zac Cini on a multi year deal which included a top 30 contract in his third year.

I have no doubt we had cap pressure challenges, that's not even an arguement but I strongly believe we could of made better choices.

There aren’t enough first graders to fill 17 top 30 squads. Teams are lucky if they have 15 of them. So the bottom half of the top 30 is going to have some nuffies. Proven reserve graders are a good place to find NRL backups, and Momoisea/Cini were certainly proven against grown men. And if they don’t work out it’s no big deal. They are only blocking other nuffies from getting a run, and there’s still plenty more nuffies to choose from. The problem is that we needed to pick nuffies at all, and that was due to injuries, which are out of our hands.

Bad Choices.

no matter how much you sugar coat this shit, they were ordinary choices...

I'm not denying they were back ups nor am I disputing that that's all we could afford at the time but they completely missed the mark..

Agree with all of that... I still think there's a reason why he was allowed to walk by 3 other clubs before we got him. Parra is the only club to have re-signed him I'm pretty sure and when we did, it was for 4 more years FFS! He showed potential at all 3 previous clubs yet none of them seemed overly bothered about him not being part of their future plans enough to want to wrap him up and extend. He showed plenty of promise when he was at the Dogs. Was good at Manly too and obviously played career best footy in 2022 but there's something off about the bloke IMO...

A great example of there being wayyyy too much of a gulf between his best game and his worst...

Signing Hodgson 2 weeks after Mahoney left back in December 2021 for the 2023 season.

Was a panic signing.

We had 12-18 months to look around and see who was available.

Instead we signed up a washed up Hodgo on his last legs who couldnt even make it to the June long weekend to be medically retired in his first season here.

that was a shit choice... in fact if we couldn't get Api than we should of at least went in for Jacob Liddle who I thought would of went well here.

His documentary had a bit of a defeatist attitude about him.

Fair enough there is more important things in life then a game of footy and it doesn't/shouldn't define you as a person.

But i reckon ever since he has gone into this psychology stuff he has lost his that will to win edge you need on the field out there.

Lets be honest most players are ruthless with the competitiveness and the environment it brings & i reckon Lane has lost a bit of that since his off-field venture into that space.

Your mistake is thinking it's possible to make 30 good choices. Every NRL club has nuffies on the roster. Every single one. Cini and Momoisea both played more first grade for other clubs than they did for us, so there was no harm. They didn't stop us picking better nuffies when we needed to bring a backup into the team. AMS, Tago and Mulitalo were all preferred to Cini, and Momoisea was behind such stars as Doorey and Murchie. To complain about a team's backups is barking up the wrong tree. It's our senior players who let us down these past two years, not a couple of blokes who combined for three NRL appearances.

I'd be very interested to see how Lane responds to Rylsey...a bit difficult atm as i believe he's training with the rehab group or at least was but the first month would be absolutely telling and if by May he doesnt respond accordingly that I'd be ringing every club in the comp offering his services..even if we have to chip in a substantial amount.

Quality coaches can still get there nuffies to perform to the ability or sometimes slightly above there potential with simple roles and a positive mindset to get the best out of them.

Jack Murchie was playing decent footy at the warriors on the edge playing outside Shaun Johnson running into holes.

Hence why i thought we signed him and liked it at the time.

He turned up to Parramatta and BA decides to play him in the middle completely against what his strengths were at the warriors as a player as an edge hole runner with his height and build.

As you can see below 78 games in his career in all grades he started in the back row on an edge out of the 84 in the starting 13

Yet we turn him into a middle forward - dumb coaching and you wonder why some players turn into nuffies when they are played out of there positions of strength by coaches who can't adapt and out of the depth as much as the players.

Like I said, he wasn't on his own there.
I'm sure it's why the coach was sacked. For the previous five years he got the best out of the squad, even in 2023 with all the unavailable players. But last year they were just garbage across the board, as soon as Moses went down. It's like they lost their self belief, or maybe I'm just projecting, because that's when I thought the season might be over. After such a good won against Manly too.

Liddle's not as good a player as Hodgson but in hindsight at least he was able to stay on the field.

If we couldn't afford to keep Mahoney there's no chance we were getting Koroisau.
