It's the same reason Katoa left Penrith. He didn't know if Cleary or Luai would be staying so he had to assume they would be.

100% and if the riff knew Luai was going to test the market or even leave November the year prior they would have probably kept Katoa.

(Probably not though as Katoa would have been offered a lot of money as the starting half for the new NRL side)

Blaize is another overrated player. He has so many flaws in his game yet the wind keeps being blown in his arse.

Time will tell. I'm a fan of his and interested to watch him develop. But most think W.Pensini is garbage whilst I rate him and think he is in for a huge season under Ryles. He also gets to learn from Lomax and JAC also.

Blaize wouldn't make our best 1-7 this season.

Wayne Bennett dumped Justin hodges to reserve grade when he signed for the Roosters.

I'm sure Wayne was just doing the bidding of the Queensland faithful
Hodges had just turned 19 and had 17 NRL games under his belt. It would've been different if he was a seasoned first grader like Drown.

By comparison, Ethan Sanders never played first grade for us again after signing with the Raiders. Talagi might've gotten the arse too except we needed him with Simonsson unavailable.

Should have offered Lomax a PO, think of all the money we could have saved lol
How do you know we didn't? Given there are so few POs in the game, I'd say the vast majority of players prefer more money. Especially ones coming to a new club. He won't want to be doing the club any favours with reducing costs under the cap, and from the club's perspective they don't know if he will be a good fit with the group. Certainly, a few people at the Dragons seemed to be off Lomax. They were happy to release him early.

Lomax
Penisini
Blaize
JAC
Brown

Pretty good... hopefully that clown in the 4 jersey learns how to tackle

There is going to be a great battle for backline spots.
Simmonson gets the nod but Nsw cup is stacked with young talent. I reckon someone will step up and by mid season one of Russel,R.Pensini,Martyn, Simmrani, AMS etc will take a position.

Competition for spots is exactly what we need to blast the BA level staleness out of the joint.

Why would they know if Luai was going to leave? They obviously wanted him to stay and intended to try and keep him. Even Luai wouldn't have known two years from the end of his current contract whether he would be leaving.

Yes. Ryles had been there for about 3 weeks prior to Balize committing to Penrith. I'd suggest negotiations had been going on for a bit and by time Ryles come in it was far to late. His mind was made up. He had been in the system for what 3yrs? 3 weeks wasn't going to change things.
*5 weeks

But the point is he was never going to develop as a five-eighth at our club because we already had a better one. It had nothing to do with the coach.

Whilst I agree, I'm more than interested how Cleary will improve him. His D was gash and his speed average but there is definitely a footy player there. Given he thought he'd be playing under Arthur it's little wonder the kid took an opportunity to play in a 4 times premiership winning team. He'd have been crazy not too.
