NRL 2025: Former Eels skipper Clint Gutherson on the rookie set to succeed him in at Parramatta

Former Parramatta skipper Clint Gutherson has opened up about the untried NRL rookie set to replace him in the no. 1 jumper at the Eels.

Former Parramatta skipper Clint Gutherson believes new Eels coach Jason Ryles has found the club’s long-term succession plan at fullback in rookie Isaiah Iongi.
Iongi joined the Eels on a three-year deal while Gutherson was still signed to Parramatta, setting the rumour mill into overdrive about his future at the time.
Ryles could not guarantee Gutherson a contract extension, and the coach had designs for Iongi to usurp the club great from the No. 1 jumper he wore for 168 games during his time at Parramatta.
Gutherson, who was appointed co-captain of St George Illawarra, told this masthead that he harboured no ill-feeling towards the Eels or Ryles after being granted a release from the final year of his deal to join the Dragons until the end of 2027.

He also backed Iongi to not only succeed him at fullback but to own the No. 1 jumper long term despite star recruit Zac Lomax also being an option at the back.
“There are going to be a lot of people watching him and the Eels at the start of the season to see how they are going about their game,” Gutherson said.
“He’s a great young player. He showed everyone how talented he is when he debuted for Penrith last year. He’s been playing for a long time and obviously just didn’t get the opportunities at Penrith.
“But I can see him getting the job done at Parra.
“He can take the number one jumper and make it his own for a very long time.”
While Iongi, who was stuck behind Dylan Edwards at Penrith, is the frontrunner to start at fullback in Parramatta’s season opener against Melbourne on March 9, newly appointed Eels skipper Mitch Moses suggested the race to replace Gutherson is far from settled.
As well as Iongi and Lomax, Ryles has other fullback options in rookie Joash Papali’i and Bailey Simonsson, who is closing in on a return from an ACL injury in Round 1.

“There has been a fair bit of competition around that position at training,” Moses said.
“It’s exciting to see who Rylesy goes with in round one.
“But Isaiah will write his own headlines, that’s up to him. We’ve got full confidence in him that if it’s him that he’s ready to go.”
Iongi will get the chance to create those headlines this weekend when makes his Eels debut in Friday night’s trial against Newcastle, where he was named at fullback.
Gutherson will also make his club debut against the Sydney Roosters on Sunday night but Tyrell Sloan, who will make way for the new skipper at fullback in Round 1, has been ruled out with a foot injury.
Sloan has gone from Flanagan’s first choice fullback to biding his time on the wing as Gutherson’s understudy. But Gutherson revealed the coach’s plans to unleash Sloan in a roaming role in 2025.
“It doesn’t matter where you are on the field, you can roam around,” Gutherson said.
“That’s something we have worked on to make sure we get him in the game to play his style.
“He’s not just going to be out there like a big winger that takes tough carries, he’ll do it all.
“It’s going to be a massive X-factor for us to have on the field, roaming around doing what he likes.”
Flanagan is expected to name Sloan in next weekend’s Charity Shield clash against South Sydney.

NRL 2025: Parramatta Eels legend Brett Kenny slams Dylan Brown’s $1.2 million asking price
Parramatta legend Brett Kenny has declared Dylan Brown is not worth his $1.2 million asking price and has called for the Eels official who allowed the get-out clauses in his contract to be sacked.
Dean Ritchie

Parramatta’s greatest five-eighth, Brett Kenny, has a sobering pre-season message for current Eels No. 6 Dylan Brown – you’re not worth $1.2m a season.
“He won’t get too many offers at that price,” Kenny said.
Kenny, who helped Parramatta to win four premiership through the 1980s, has declared Brown should be paid $800,000 annually – $400,000 short than his alleged asking price.
And Kenny has called on Parramatta to sack the club official who inserted multiple ongoing get-out clauses into Brown’s long-term contract.
Through his contract clauses, Brown has until round 10 this season to negotiate with rival clubs and will enjoy the same powers over the next two seasons.
Reports have emerged stating Brown’s management is seeking a contract worth $1.2m a season.
Kenny stressed that superstars like Nathan Cleary and Cam Munster could command $1.2m a season – not Brown.

While Kenny wants Brown to remain an Eel, he did say: “I honestly don’t think he is worth $1.2m, which seems to be his asking price. To me, he hasn’t done enough yet to prove he’s worth $1.2m a year.
“I don’t know what he’s on now but he’s played for his country so I think he’s worth around $800,000 – not $1.2m. He still needs to prove himself more at club level.
“For me, Cameron Munster, who plays in the same position, and Nathan Cleary are $1.2m players. They have proven themselves.
“I don’t know whether he was told to play the way he did under (former coach) Brad Arthur but he never seemed to do enough with the ball.
“There wasn’t a lot of variety in his play. He had a big bloke like Shaun Lane outside him and could have used him a lot better.
“(Brown) needs a few more quality seasons and, if he can do that, sure, then you can look at $1.2m. I read someone that Brown had a better season than Munster and was rated in the top five-eighths in the competition.
“I don’t know whether that was right.
“But defensively he was outstanding, you couldn’t complain about his defence. People say he has played for New Zealand but we’re talking about club footy here.”
Parramatta has refused a request to increase his current deal – which is said to be worth somewhere between $750,000 and $900,000 – to remove the round ten get-out clause.

Kenny questioned why Brown was signed to such an epic eight-year contract, which doesn’t end until 2031 – and asked who included the get-out clauses.
“I don’t know who the hell did it but whoever came up with the agreement which (stated Brown) could pull whenever he wants should be sacked,” Kenny said.
“The clauses Brown and Mitchell Moses have in their contracts … who (allowed) it should be sacked. Get rid of them. You don’t let the players do this.
“Signing him to 2031, we’re only just into 2025. That’s another six years away. Good luck to him but why would you sign a bloke that long? Three years only …”
Kenny said Brown owed Parramatta after the club’s support over a sexual touching without consent charge back in 2023. Brown was ultimately suspended for seven games.
“Parramatta stuck by him and he should pay that back to them. If I was him, I’d be looking to stay at Parramatta,” Kenny said.
Newcastle has been exposed as a club willing to table a six-year, $6m a season offer to 24-year-old Brown

I reckon if Harry Grant wanted to play for our club but wanted to have a PO in his contract they might rethink their new strategy.

Yeah - no doubt! That's exactly where you hand one out

But they might hold off on giving 'em out to the likes of Matto/ Dunster (etc). My guess is the "never again" talk is required to serve notice to player managers that there is a new sheriff in town who won't roll over so easily

Bert is the rent-a-quote outside back version of Ray Price for a dinosaur in Bulldog Ritchie to write up dribble.

Bert continue to embarrass himself with dumb quotes that makes him sound so bitter and twisted.

I wasn't around for the 80s but Sterlo is more revered out of all those legends certainly in my generation that missed it not only because of his media role for 30 years but also his analysis of the game and he stayed out of the club politics.

If Sterlo took a shot at the club you know he wasn't just doing to have a whinge he was being constructive.

See, I still don’t think we would. It’s a terrible business strategy from a planning perspective and I reckon we’d prefer to allocate more cap space to Grant for a guaranteed number of years, rather than going down the PO path. If he declines then we’d move on.

The fact that we’re looking to remove Moses’ PO suggests the same as he is a better and more valuable commodity than Grant.

This.

Media seem to have those two on speed dial.
They know they will say something dumb that they can use for a headline. And it’s usually putting shit on the club or a player.

Well Melbourne gave him one, so it can’t be that stupid.
And why would we move on to a lesser player when we could sign the best? All we need to do is give him an option for an extra year (or two). Can you imagine the media and Eels fans finding out that the club had the chance to sign him but didn’t because we flat-out refused to give him a PO?

I've heard Gould talk about how difficult it is managing a salary cap and building a squad, length of contracts and knowing what Juniors will be ready that you don't want to lose.
He also has mentioned how POs add to the complications and make it almost impossible to plan.

Yes I firmly beleive we lost some quality spine players recently due to POs and unable to plan.
