You could be right. Our senior players do seem more selfish than those at other clubs, but maybe it just seems that way because it's Parramatta, and we are biased as fans. If they are indeed more selfish, why is the former coach the scapegoat? Gutherson just got the arse. How do we know he wasn't the problem? How do we know the main culprit hasn't just been named captain?
Specifically to this point I think they were both part of the problem. Looking from the outside in I think the salary cap stuff in 2016 changed BA's perspective to a lot of it being a business. He always went on about players doing what was best for themselves and that's what we saw and heard come contract time.
As for Gutho, no doubt an absolute whole hearted performer on the field and around training. Gave his all to get the most out of his ability.. but tried to get every cent he was entitled to every contract, played us off against Manly who hadn't even made an offer at the time, and bailed to one of the worst clubs in the league at the moment as soon as he found someone to secure his future .. all well and good but also contradictory to him always saying he's "all about winning" and "just wants to win". I don't think our leaders had much idea about building a sustainable winning culture and Ryles has to make this a place players want to be and want to win at. Mitch and Dylan have spent the best part of their careers in the same environment it's something that has to change.

You don't get much for 300 mill these days. Elon needs to get one of his manchildren to take a look at that contract.
Elon would want 17 teams to play out of Ringrose.

There does seem to be certain first graders (even quality ones) who spend their entire careers at average (or worse) clubs while there are others who spend part or all of their careers at very successful clubs. I suspect these two groups of players have very different motivations. But it could also be that some players are happy with a significant part of their income not guaranteed through a first party contract with an NRL club. It was suspicious how many Storm players ended up at the Cowboys a few years ago, for example.
