28 would have pretty much been the average retirement age for a forward back then. Obviously there were exceptions but Stumpy did have an 9 year FG career.
Not really, was a bit of a shock if anyone retired that age, even back in the 80s
Stumpy was riddled with knee injuries the two seasons prior at the roosters , so understandable he couldnt go on . Was a risk picking him, but Jack Gibson was the coach, and we had a fairly good pack as it is., and the way Jack brought the backline together was there for all to see..
