It still concerns me a little when I hear JR say they think Joash is a first grader but are still not sure what position that will be at, and that will only come with time. Reminds me of BA saying the same thing with Blaize. I’d like to think as a coaching team they’ve made a call on that and his training and development is focusing on a position for the future. It’s certainty apparent he isn’t pencilled in first 5/8th at this stage
I’d say he recognises he’s probably only going to make it as a fullback but he doesn’t want to displace Iongi at the moment

From JDB's perspective, he wouldn't be coming here to win a premiership. This could be his last ever contract and he wants to get paid. One year with CO would come with the most lucrative price a player could expect.
Coincidentally, when his second year is up for us, the PNG Hunters come into the NRL, and he has heritage and has represented PNG in the past.

It may be his final hurrah.

I wonder if ryles sees ionghi as his 5/8 as he has all the skills and then some , Joash maybe as his fullback
Ryles didn’t see Ryley Smith as anything going into preseason, but his effort didn’t go unnoticed and his pathway was not blocked. At least that example shows that the coach does not have a fixed mindset and is open to new ideas.

Iongi is currently considered the best fullback coming through in the NRL, so I think switching him is unlikely, but he is obviously open to ideas.

For mine I think that Joash offers great utility value, not necessarily a lock in any position.
