I don't understand. It's it a new comp? Don't they need heaps of players
yeah, rugby players. Between all of the domestic RU comps in Australia, GB, France, Japan, Argentina, New Zealand, SA, Pacific Islands they should be able to harvest 99% of their requirements, blokes who are actually proven at that shit game. RL players will be either for filler or attention.

The only sensible reason why the Yawnion comp is looking at NRL players is to try and grab attention of the Australian audience. Same reason why the ARU targeted NRL players to uplift interest.

it’s a completely different game and when you see athletes like Sam Burgess struggle, it’s a massive leap to pay substantial overs. The usual media guys are pumping it up, Chammas and someone from the SMH called Pandaram, most others see it as a headline grab.

Who will watch it her if they expect a big audience, it will probably be a disappointment. See if that is the case .

With regards to PNG Chiefs (okay name) I am of the opinion that the population thing is a bit misleading. There may be 15million of them but there is only 700k in Port Morseby. I think 80% of the population live very differntly to what we can get our head around. I wonder if it is not a case of people from Port Morseby and Lae are massive NRL fans but 85% of the population are not or are at least less so.
They'll easily find 20K people to get inside the stadium and 50K watching right outside wanting to get in. Plus TV added audience of 10 mil or whatever.

I for one was always a fan of PNG getting in. I can see the arguments on the other side but I think the support for the team will be there. People underestimate the effects of poverty on the population.

The biggest issue for the team will be lack of professionalism in the organization, corruption and funds embezzling along with safety of any foreign players and tourists.

I think we're all assuming R360 will be current Yawnion rules, but will it?? Who says this new invention of the sport won't be rugby with 11 players on the field with tackled play the balls instead of rucks and malls, and have lineouts instead of scrums?

It is likely an entertainment product after all, not a sport.

That's still larger than the current populations of Canberra, Newcastle, Wollongong and Townsville...

They also have an option to introduce a means of not tackling anywhere the head, thus reducing future CTE issues, etc.

If they nail that and can survive 2 or 3 generations, they'd likely become the dominant 'rugby' code.

I assume it will be difficult to get this sport off the ground legally with no governing body approval if they play 80 minute games of two halves, on a 100 metre field that has scrums and line outs with either 15 or 13 players on the field in any case.

Maybe 75 minute games, three 25 minute thirds, fields are 90 metres (soccer fields can be more in play with large in goal), 12 players on the field, 3 unlimited interchanges, 4 tackles with a roll the ball instead of using your foot, defence has to be only 5 metres back, last two players in tackle don't need to go 5 metres back. Any touch of the head is a penalty. 6 points for a hand passed score over the opponents line (i.e. a Try), 4 points if using a kick to cross the opponents line, just need to catch, not put the ball down (i.e. American Football Touchdown). Kicker chooses where to do conversations, 4 points for goal over 45 metres, 3 points for a conversion from side line or 40 metres out, 2 points if 35 metres out or mid range in from sideline, 1 point if front within 25 metres. Place or drop kick. Can be the same scoring system for a penalty and field goal. Use an NFL or AFL ball.

Interesting times...

Maybe R360 will be revolutionary and super smart and make rugby into a game the fans want to watch. If so, they'll just take the NRL rules and go from there

I think a big part of it will be simply because the of the skill level of nrl players.

That and with the rugby federations banning union players from representing their nations in international competitions, many rugby players wont consider it, but NRL players on the other hand are not part of rugby so wont care that they cant play for the Wallabies, and the extra cash is the incentive.

I think if the first year is a success, the NRL could find itself royally screwed

I think this is a bit dramatic.
From what we know so far, there is little info about this circus as a whole.
It appears that there will be franchises in far flung weird non rugby cities like Madrid, Chicago, Toronto etc...
Nothing in Australia or NZ.
They haven't even outlined the rules of the game yet, although it is believed to be a travelling "magic round" type scenario, playing all games on a weekend in each city.
This will NOT be a success.
The NRL has little to fear from this.
And I hope V'Landys and Abdo come down hard on player managers and players who defect to this joke of a proposal.
