I think Ryles is clearly aiming for a Penrith-style model built around juniors and sustained success, not short-term sugar hits. There’ll still be sensible signings like Jack Williams, but we likely need one genuine elite prop to balance out the kids, which is exactly why we went so hard and so publicly after Keaon.

We tried, but Flanno and his crew torched us by dangling an extra year — the same mistake that’s repeatedly blown up in our faces with ageing forwards. Watmough, Lane, Cartwright, Joffa and Matterson are prime examples.
I agree mate. And lets be honest, its what us fans at Parramatta have been asking for.

I do really hope we nail an elite player, hopefully a prop or lock but I wont hold my breath.

Im hoping we have a couple of these young blokes become elite players, then we won’t have to recruit them from elsewhere.
Iongi is a chance. Maybe Tuivati or one of the other forwards. We already have Moses who is an elite half.

Yup. Quite different to flannos strategy

I too hope Sam becomes the forwards leader

You have to give the Rabbitohs credit. They signed Inglis when he was the biggest name in the game. They signed Burgess and Latrell who were both huge signings and signed Bennett twice. (Even though i reckon he is well past it). Now Haas. That is how you do recruitment.
How do they do it ffs?!?

By actually setting an audacious recruitment goal and achieving it.

They don’t adopt the philosophy of people like you, which is that “you can’t compete with “big” clubs because they at are all cheating, so why bother?”

it is a mentality that craves ultimate success, as opposed to “we tried, what else do you want us to do?”

You really need to record your bitter little philosophies in a book

Maybe Souths are one of those big clubs with advantages outside the salary cap. There was a recent post about clubs owned by billionaires that you would've f**king hated. Hang on I'll find it.

In this case you are incorrect, even Haas said he needed a change . He changed from Australia to Samoa for rep football and probably wants to reset given his family siuatation in QLD. Apparently he has signed for a similar amount as was on the table at Broncos.

we lack foresight and ambition in some respects, definitely sensible to build from juniors, but good clubs do move quickly and early to ensure they sign players to strengthen the roster.

Williams is a decent player, Sharks were happy to lose him, we’ve done well with projects but haven’t recruited at the top 10/15% of the available players for a fair while .

Here it is:
Can we pls stop blowing our loads about Souths and giving them credit. Money talks, simple as that. I know the Broncos have strong financial resources and The Thoroughbreds, but Souths are owned by billionaires. Have a look at the net worth of Mike Cannon-Brookes, Russell Crowe, and to a lesser extent James Packer. The rich clubs like Souths, Roosters (Nick Politis) and Bulldogs (Laundy) all have billionaires involved and will always offer more beyond the salary cap than other clubs. The rich clubs can always find a way to fit elite players into already stacked rosters (loaded with rep players). Sadly Parra just doesn’t have a billionaire private owner. Don’t get me wrong I don’t think Mark O’Neill et al are particularly effective at recruitment, but they’re never going to land a big fish when competing against those other clubs. It’s just a fact of life. Best we can hope for is to produce and retain elite juniors and extract value before the rich clubs poach them. It pains me to say it, but that’s why I respect and admire the Panthers success. Unlike your Souths and Roosters, they didn’t buy a premiership. Year after year they lose their homegrown talent but still produce quality players…

Souths have to have billionaire benefactors to survive. We don’t need that. We’re already rich enough. Our lack of private ownership isn’t a bug. It’s a feature. Do you really think the members would agree to private ownership to become strong like Souths?
We have our own advantages that Souths don’t have. Our centre of excellence is bigger and so is our junior nursery. Time to start taking advantage.
