Zac Lomax’s slim hopes of playing for Melbourne in round one against his former club Parramatta are on life support after his court fight against the Eels was pushed back until the beginning of March.
Lomax was due to face off against the Eels in court later this week but the hearing was unexpectedly delayed until March 2 – only three days before the Storm and Parramatta are due to kick off their seasons at AAMI Park.
The hearing has been set down for five days, meaning lawyers for Parramatta and the Storm may be locking horns in the Supreme Court only hours before the respective sides meet in Melbourne.
Lomax and the Storm had optimistically held out hope that he could take his place in that game but those hopes are fading fast given the latest delay.
Even if Lomax emerges victorious from his court fight in early-March, it seems highly unlikely he would be ready to play in round one given he has been denied permission to train with the Storm.
The latest delay shapes as a body blow to Lomax as he bids to make his return to the NRL after his stunning decision to walk out on his contract at the Eels.
Parramatta inserted a clause in his termination that gave them the power to dictate his future but Lomax is now challenging that agreement in court as he looks to mount a comeback with the Storm, having been left high and dry when rebel rugby union competition R360 delayed its start.
The Storm have attempted to strike a compensation deal with Parramatta but the Eels have thus far rejected offers of $200,000 and $300,000.
That has left Lomax at the mercy of the courts as he looks to resume his career. This masthead understands Lomax’s legal team had already requested permission for the NSW star to train with Melbourne while he awaited the outcome of the legal action.
That request was denied, meaning Lomax’s only hope of being available for round one will be if the Storm and Eels can reach a settlement in time for him to play.
That seems hard to fathom given the gulf between the two clubs. Even if they do cut a deal, there is every chance Parramatta demand that Lomax is forced to sit out the opening round.
