Yeah you can have your own opinion for sure. Just don’t agree. Gutho is currently running backwards at saints and is overpaid for what he offers. You’d be only one that I hav heard of that wants him back. He’s past it but was good 6 years ago.

I absolutely love Clint Gutherson - heart of a lion, smart player.

But we made the right call - his body is failing him.

We had to move him on.

I think it was a tough, and correct call, from Ryles.

Looking at our pack, maybe we should have kept onto RCG for a few more years, but hindsight is beautiful...

Yes. Do you consider them to be small? I take it you agreeing with me on my ultimate point that Tweedle being small but fast might be able to make a good contribution to the hit up game?
They (Edwards and To’o) are small compared to the middle defenders they are running at, but not small for their position, or at least not light. Twidle is a skinny lad. He would be like Moses on hit ups, often getting handled and losing PCM, and being forced into a slow play-the-ball.

Once RCG left Parra he has been bad ever since. Isn't he in England now?
Was he signed on for another year and we released him so he could get a longer contract elsewhere? We need to stop doing that. I am sure they think they win friends doing that but simping never works out.

To be honest, I'm not sure.

And his form probably didn't warrant a new deal.

But we are desperately short of size up front, and Reg was a big body.

What's done, is done.

Just on Sloan, I remember when he extended last time it was reportedly on $500k a season. This was obviously based on him kicking on. I’d take him for $350 to $400k. He has plenty of speed and can also freely go on every ride at Luna Park. We don’t have that in our roster.

We do need quick outside backs, for sure.

But I think we need quality up front more desperately - we are getting murdered in the ruck every single week.

I think our coaching staff banked on the idea of us getting by with a more mobile forward pack. However for this to effectively occur they must be super fit. Our guys aren’t and it’s obvious. Fatigue hits and our defence folds and we lose the ruck. Moses’ long range kicking game has masked our inadequacies here. We hardly make over 50m in a set prior to the kick whilst the opposition constantly do.

Small mobile pack requires meter eater outside backs. Simonsson was our only one

I think that would mean a penalty every set.
so exactly the same as now. except swap the 6 again for a penalty.

i dont know what the answer is but i feel like more and more, games are decided in the first 20 minutes with one team getting a player sin binned and/or a significant amount of 6 again calls against them. This hurts interchange systems as forwards are gassed earlier but still completing there 20-25 min initial stint.

i'd love to know the stats of how many teams win after having a player sin binned in the first 20 mins or having a lobsided 6 again stat against them in this time.

The game hasn't changed all that much, even allowing for the 6 again debacle, teams still need their big and powerful bodies. Be they forwards or outside backs. Note: I like the 6 again but it is being used incorrectly.

Blind Freddy could see we needed more quality size in our roster even going back to when we made the GF in 2022, which I kept calling for ad nauseum.

We were short back then 1 or even 2 sizable gorillas and I still believe that is why the Panthers could dominate us when it mattered. Sure they are the fittest team in the comp, but size and brutality can and will overpower that and not allow them to get into their rhythm if coached correctly and with the right game plan.

The problem right now is that there is no team in the comp bar the Broncos when fully fit and playing at their optimum that can overpower them, so their fitness goes unchallenged.

Add to that that playmakers now play in dinner suits(Jeez Cleary must be blowing chunks that he is playing in this era) and we have the perfect storm for the one team(Penrith) that has all its ducks in a row to create this unchallenged NRL dynasty.

They are by far not the best team I have seen but they are the best and fittest NRL team to play in the dinner suit era that started in 2020 to really take hold.

I think there are elements of coaching. Other teams can still wrestle and slow the play the ball and not get pinged for 6 agains. namely panfers and melbourne - they lie all over our players and when we do that, we get pinged for being slow.

We also like to be efficient - so many times i see 2 of our players struggling with the attacker still making pcms. The 3rd of our player watches or runs back to the line. Then a late offload occurs and we are effed.

The last thing is if you rewatch panfers and tigers, 2 players wrap the attacker and the 3 grabs their jersey and pulls him back to the goal line. Then they all get tangled up and a slow play the ball entails. (I am sure the ex-panfer boys brought that to the tiges).

So there is technique and tackling strategy that we haven't got close to mastering. We're still like BA's team, keep the disciplne and get off the players quick - but that tires us out and we're on the back foot.

Do they lack the ability to get fit, or is our coaching in that department inadequate.

I'm not saying you are wrong but i sometimes wonder if it is not their fitness, but their lack of mongrel in running the ball. None of our backs or forwards can get over the advantage line (except for Simmonsen- f**k), which gives the other team an easy set of 6 in defence and more energy to run the ball hard at us. Next minute our big players are back pedalling and they are gassed.

It only takes one damaging run in a set to get a roll on, but no one in our team can do it.

That's not true. I think Sam, KitKat and Kelma gets over the advantage line quite consistently.
So does Walker, Doorey.

The back, only Bailey and that's why we're stuck in our half.

Yep, this is the opposite of front loading effort or chasing the collision. Not making the effort to get an extra man into the tackle means you pay for it with more fatigue after he offloads or plays the ball quickly.
