'On the map': Parra rookie's pride as NRL's first Kurd

Araz Nanva is one of the few winners in Parramatta's injury crisis and the centre hopes his presence at NRL level can achieve some recognition for his people along the way.
A week after making his debut in a demoralising 50-point hammering at the hands of Gold Coast, Nanva was part of an Eels side missing eight regular first-graders that claimed a 38-20 win over Canterbury on Sunday.
Nanva, who was lavished with praise for his defensive work by Brad Fittler and Billy Slater on the Nine Network, is believed to be the first Kurdish player to feature in the NRL.

He is proud of the fact he speaks the Sorani dialect at home with his parents, who migrated to Australia the year before he was born.
The region of Kurdistan straddles modern-day Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey and its people, who have sought independence, have frequently faced persecution.
"I'm of Kurdish background and for those that don't know it's one of the biggest ethnic populations without a country. I'm very proud to be Kurdish," Nanva told AAP.
"I'm from the Iranian part. My mum, dad and brother came over in 2003 and I was born a year later and my parents worked very hard to raise me and my brother.
"I've got a lot of love from all the other Kurdish people watching and I appreciate that and I'm doing the best I can.
"Not many people know about us, so to put them on the map like that is huge."
Nanva had a solid showing against the Bulldogs as the Eels moved to a 3-4 start to the season.
The 22-year-old is comfortable with the fact that he may make way next week if Sean Russell, who was late scratching on Sunday, is cleared to face Manly.
"No one is happy about the injuries but it opens up opportunities for the boys like me to try and do our best for the team," he said.

You wouldn’t want to get that spelling wrong with Kurd.

Good on him. He has done a very good job. It is great to get some recognition for the Kurdish people. They are a fairly peaceful people even though they have been oppressed and persecuted.
Does anyone know much about Nanva? Was he in our SG Ball teams for example?

Yes I seen him in cup enough. I would have Samrani above him at this stage but not heaps between them. Samrani is stronger and works harder. Better meter eater. Nanva has better defense and moves a little better lateral
I'd say his ceiling would be S.Russel/R.Morgan level. Solid enough. I would be suprised if he becomes a difference maker. He just isnt fast or powerful enough to get to that level. But I guess never know

After watching him on Sunday

He should be above the pecking order now on 2 outside backs we currently have in our outside backs in the top 30 (Tago & Renisini)

I personally pick him ahead of Brian Kelly now whenever one of the centres are out.

Were wasting our time with Kelly while we can develop Nanva into a competent first grade outside back.
Whilst agree he should be ahead of Penisini, Tago and possibly Kelly - he’s not in the top 30 and I don’t think we should be wasting a spot on another outside back unless we get to June 30 and still need to fill positions

Brought over from the Dragons SG Ball side after our SG Ball won the comp. He went straight into Flegg.

I’d cut Joash loose. Twidle is more versatile.
Anyone reckon he looks a bit like Joey Manu? I couldn’t unsee it once it popped in my head.

He might need more development obviously, but not many kids come in and back themselves like he did.

I hope he continue to prioritise his and Nanva’s development. Are they a potential wing/centre combo in waiting? Is Twidle a chance to surpass Ionghi for #1?

All I know is they are the only two bright spots for mine in the first 2 months of footy, I want to for them more NRL game time.

If you told me before the season started that after 7 rounds we'd be 1 win behind the broncos and roosters and ahead of Storm - i'd have been over the moon.

Guess we're not going too badly.

If we play with that intensity and focus this weekend, we'll beat Manly who were brilliant in Foran's first game, but i think the last 2 weeks were lucky to have played a Cowboys side would have given us a run for our money against the titans as worst effort from a team all year, and the dragons. I don't think their formline is accurate. Also haven't won a game at Brookie all year.

Haha...you're very funny.

That my friend unfortunately will probably be our best game of the season. Also do you really think that this team is mentally strong enough to back up last weekends performance?

I expect players like Penisini to revert back to his sleepy best and miss 500 tackles, 50 dropped balls, and get caught from behind by the ballboy.

Our Paradise!
