:( all over twitter at present.

Easily my favourite post-Mcgrath bowler, big hearted, bowled great lines, really good quality seamer and a real shame he couldn't get his knee through another series. Sounded like scans showed a worsening to his knee injury which was gonna put him out of the series and he pulled the plug.

Just wish he'd hit his stride a few years earlier so we got more out of him

Cummins into the Ashes squad

Well, f**k.

Quality bowler, brilliant in the limited time he had. As a fan he gave plenty of confidence when the makeup of the attack was hit and miss at times.

Bowled with a heap of skill and even more heart.

Bowling Cook with the first ball of the innings at the WACA with one of the best balls you will ever see, and the lion hearted effort late in the day vs South Africa are two of my favourite cricket moments in recent years.

Real shame, only saw him at his best too briefly.

Replaced in the Ashes squad by Cummins. What the? He's only played two first class matches since his test debut four years ago. And none at all in the last year.

Bird or Abbott would have been far better choices.

Played one of, if not the biggest part in our revival over the years.

Enjoy commentating and rest easy big man!

Farrrrrrrrkkkkkk!!!! Massive loss, one of the more skilful bowlers to ever play for Australia.

His record speaks for itself, and from all reports he is a better bloke than bowler which says a lot about him.

Wow. Was not expecting this.

Will be a huge loss for Australian Cricket. Great bowler who eoukd have gone down as one of the true greats if he stayed fit.

:(:( Shame really. This series wouldve definately been his swansong and his bowling no doubt wouldve won us the series.

But what a career, he probably wouldnt have thought he'd play this many tests, considering he debuted in his 30s and took over 100 wickets.

Couldve taken a lot more if it wasnt for so many injuries.

Best of luck Ryno.

Huge blow, poor guy must be so shattered as he spent a long time working up to this series.

Gonna leave a big hole in our squad. Wonder if he will still remain on tour as his experience will be invaluable.

Not to sure what Cummins has done to earn a spot as his replacement.

Same thing could be said of the world cup.

I know they wanted to preserve Rhino for the ashes. But a world cup in your own backyard is something special, feel for him he missed out there, plus would have had amble time for the ashes anyway

One retiree down, id say there will be 2-3 more for Australia by series end

Short sweet international career for Rhino. Saw him live his 2nd ODI in Adelaide against Pakistan where he bowled us to victory with a bag of 5.

Always put his heart and soul for Australia, and almost always delivered

Real shame -very very fine bowler, at the end of the day a Shane Bond like career.

I was at Lords the other day, missed seeing him in the nets by a day - the talk was he looked like he was struggling a bit, but nobody thought it was this bad - testament to how tough he is...

Where's Pattinson at? I would have assumed he was a better bet if they're looking at someone who hasn't played first class cricket in recent times

Keeps hurting his hamstring.

I think before too long it'll be Hazlewood, Starc and Patto, with Cummins in the wings. Not sure how long Johnson will last but fast bowlers can fade pretty quickly at his age. Hopefully he bowls well from here on in, need his experience this series.

Could have been a true great of the game, still is, but injury has robbed everyone of seeing Harris at his best for long periods.

Well done Rhino, great career.
