Average just doesn't cut it in the NRL.

How can that be? The average NRL player cuts it doesn't he?

Do you contend that only above average players cut it in the NRL?

Would be interesting to list the current Sharks mob and say who is average and who is below/above average.

Here's 3

David Simmons - is he below average, average or above average?

Noddy - is he below average, average or above average?

Kinga - is he below average, average or above average?

You wouldn't have many players to pick a team from Sheros if you only wanted those above average. In fact there wouldn't be a comp/

BTW those Tigers, the ones that won the comp, had plenty of average players in their side.

Would make a helluva lot more sense to call them unknowns and treat them as such than revere them as some sort of God's gift to the Sharks before anyone has ever really seen them.

More often than not, no. Most NRL players are a cut above other footy players. You only have to compare bush footy to the NRL. You don't get a gig in the NRL without the potential to be a stand out player. The average footballer often gets dropped to first division. The average footballer plays more bad games than good, fails to live up to potential, and then gets a gig with the Castleford Tigers.

Do you contend that only above average players cut it in the NRL?

Yes, if they expect to continue employment as NRL footballers. The NRL is an elite competition, the players are supposedly the best of the best.

We probably had too many average to below average players in the squad last year.

average to below average. If he doesn't improve send him to ESL as well.

Noddy - is he below average, average or above average?

above average

Kinga - is he below average, average or above average?

average, with the potential to develop into an above average player.

I look at past Sharks teams that have gone the closest to winning us a comp, (for example 1978), and from memory these sides were strong from fullback to prop. No dead wood making up the numbers like our sides of the last few years. Of course I want every position in the Sharks line up to ooze class, that's what I hoped would happen under Anderson, instead we got luminaries like Tweedle, Milford, Seers, Emelio and Wessels.

BTW those Tigers, the ones that won the comp, had plenty of average players in their side.

No too many weaknesses in my opinion. Fitzhenry, Payten maybe. As a unit they were dynamite.

In that case Ryan would be classified as below average because in the fair dinkum department Ryan would of had buckleys of crackin that squad!

If you include all footballers of every grade on the planet then you would have to concede that NRL standard is above average.

On that scale I'd class McGoldrick as average too.

I'm not comparing all footballers though and this may be where the difference of opinion comes from. I'm only talking about NRL players

If you rated every player to play NRL on any scoring basis, 1-10 for arguments sake, you'd be able to deduce and average score. Most players would be average in the average range. That'd make them average players wouldn't it. It's not a hrad concept.

I don't have any problem with having average players. They are usually the backbone of a side. Comes back to star team vs team of stars.

There's no way McGoldrick is anywhere near the class of Ritchie Barnett, who went over at around the age of 28 on big money, and still was playing great footy. To give the Cas fans a better idea, I'd say he'll probably go a bit worse than Paul Mellor did for you guys.

This just goes to show how uninterested the Wests Tigers really were about his signing.

Really? They seem to of regained interest in a hurry

I love it when some one brings Tweedle into an arguement.  That was a very ordinary player.

Ps Frenzy - Some would argue that average player is a polite way of saying "cr@p" player.

I agree though as the NRL is the elite competition, There should be no "average" players by normal standards, even though in comparison some will show up as quite average to the incredibly talented.
