Sack Flanagan

The circumstances were different with Foz. The Sea Eagles back then were a pretty high-flying team, so he could afford to play and make mistakes, because their star players were being more greatly scrutinised. In this instance, there are demands for Walsh because he is expected to come in and make a difference to the team's fortunes, if not their saviour, and if he ends up not being an upgrade from Brooks, he'll cop it from fans for being 'overrated'. Also, Rugby league has changed a fair bit from when Foran was playing. The constant media pile-on of players who weren't performing well, on TV shows and social media, was far less than it is now, so throwing him in this early could very well damage his confidence. We saw it with our young halves a few years ago, especially Bud (although that came from the coach and captain at the time throwing him under the bus).
All good points, and I'm sure the clubs are in the best position to make the call on when it's the right time to give younger players a start. My only point is it's not really based on age given there have been many players who have debutted at 18 years of age or less, including Foran.

Foran also pointed out that the young half had only played 20 games of rugby league in his life to this stage.

Yep. Joey Walsh spent much of his school/childhood years solely playing rugby union. He is considered talented, but in his case, he genuinely needs more time in Manly's lower grades to develop. With Many's pack the way it is, even Andrew Johns or Peter Sterling at the height of their respective playing abilities would struggle behind the current Manly pack.

Foran debuted in 2009 round 15 and played 9 games at 19yrs of age

But he went straight into a team that beat Melbourne 40-0 in the previous season GF

hence why Foran is shielding Joey Walsh despite Walsh a much bigger half than Reed

and no doubt our coaching staff developing Reed in NSW until ready to launch into NRL ……which tends to be later in the season with very young emerging halves

it’s amazing that the lean 19yr old 74kg Reed has come into selection for rd4 via the extended bench

Looks like Paul Crawley is going to lead the "Dean Young for Dragons Head Coach" push (source: https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nr...s/news-story/4546460258ea5bae1f083a99e6dd0fbc) -

YOUNG SHOULD GET NEXT CRACK AT COACHING DRAGONS

In the wake of Anthony Seibold’s sacking, pressure mounts on Shane Flanagan to turn St George Illawarra’s season around.

And while the Dragons have come out publicly in support of their under fire coach this week, the bosses who gave Flanagan his two-year contract extension towards the end of last year should be under just much scrutiny as Flanagan is right now.

I pointed out on NRL 360 this week that not only are the Dragons on a run of eight straight losses, but they have gone down in 12 of their past 14 games.

What makes this even more intriguing is when you go back and look at the timeline leading up to when Flanagan got his extension at the start of last August.

At that point the Dragons had lost four straight going into the round 22 game against the Raiders.

But on the back of one win the club announced the following week that Flanagan had been extended until the end of 2028.

The Dragons then won their next game against the Sharks.

But since it’s gone pear-shaped, with eight straight defeats.

It’s flies in the face of the club statement last August that quoted chief executive Tim Watsford saying: “Shane has played a critical role in setting the foundation for where this club is heading.

“He’s re-instilled belief in our playing group, coaches and supporters together with reiterating the privilege of wearing the Red V.”

Talk about a comment not ageing well.

At least the Dragons won’t have to go searching too far for their next coach if they end up being forced to make that call because they have a ready-made replacement in Dean Young.

Young has done a long apprenticeship in assistant roles at the Dragons and the Cowboys, and I’ve spoken to Wayne Bennett about him in the past.

Bennett is convinced the man who was so instrumental in the team culture in the Dragons’ 2010 premiership triumph will also make a great head coach when Young finally gets his chance.

The issue moving forward for the Dragons is that you’d imagine Young will also be in the mix if Todd Payten ends up getting pushed out of the Cowboys.

It makes the result on Saturday potentially more crucial for both coaches given there was also mail last week that the Cowboys were ready to pull the trigger on Payten before their come-from-behind win over the Storm.

In the race for Young, it could end up being a case of first in, best dressed.

I mean let’s be honest

if u are the Dragons board and CEO

u may believe that the results with a caretaker or Flano won’t be much different against the Dogs and Storm…..that’s are fair assumption ie two losses we’re going to happen anyway

every betting agency was in the oppositions favour and that is a fair recognition of what would happen

you would be disappointed vs the Tits definitely !

But u know that Flano extended to 2028 and deeply involved with Ando gives more weight in negotiations ie KK happened and that was crucial (even if just a perception of solidarity)

Next step is get to end of round 6, assess results and either stay the course for season 2026 while trying to cement the couple more key signings with an appearance of who the coach will be long term

and then ? Pull the trigger or stay as is

Unless u are Manly and have secured a long term experienced successful coach ? With a caretaker for now that will stay on as an assistant coach ?

I reckon the Board and Management will wait until just before the state of origin series (back end of May). That gives an incoming coach the best chance of causing an upset and getting a win against an origin depleted side, thus justifying their decision.

Young has been defensive coach at both the dragons and cowboys before and in both instances the teams defence went backwards…this would be a disaster.

As it’s Easter I am hoping for Flanno to be resurrected on Sunday

I am hoping that Watsford understands that, if there is any hope of this club being a super club once again, then the fans need to be engaged and enthusiastic. Happy fans lead to increased memberships, increased gates and increased merchandise sales.

If the same old crap is dished up with jobs for the boys or rusted on loyalties then the last of the fan engagement will be flushed down the toilet. This isn't a time for the same old same old and I sincerely hope that given Watsfords background in marketing and supercars he is well aware that its not whether the fans are right but whether they are happy.

So take the hint Watsford we do not want another jobs for the boys coach, we want to be entertained and feel like we have a chance, we want to see some signings that are exciting and give us hope. We want to see decisive action not the usual waffle and indecision. Kyle has been given a more than fair run but he is not the answer, tell the coach and get an exciting half and fullback.

reckon we will respond like manly?
not a chance in hell
You would expect a big response at home this week. If not i can't see us winning any games until after Anzac day and tough decisions have to be made. Hopefully our management weren't complete idiots and put some performance clauses in Flannos extension because he said we would make the 8 last year.. embarrassing

Is anyone watching Manley's first game under Foran?
Either it's the biggest stitch-up ever OR Foran has achieved in 6 days what Flanno hasn't been able to achieve in two full seasons.
If anything, Foran has done a Reverse Flanno - cos we're worse now than when he got hold of us.
FFS, BoD - sack the droopy-eyed, clueless limpet now!!
