PAUL MCGREGOR SIGNS TWO-YEAR DEAL TO REMAIN COACH OF ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA UNTIL 2019
David Riccio — Exclusive, The Daily Telegraph
June 7, 2017 1:56am

PAUL McGregor has put an end to six months of uncertainty by remaining head coach of St George-Illawarra until the end of 2019 after inking a new two-year deal with the club.

Beginning 2017 without a deal for next season, a relieved McGregor informed the entire playing roster of the positive news during Wednesday’s training session in Wollongong.

The Dragons hierarchy ensured months of speculation over McGregor’s future could be resolved by formalising a deal over the last 24-hours which reflects the 49 year-old’s outstanding effort to inject new life into the Red-V.

Currently sitting third on the NRL ladder after 13-rounds, the Dragons have enjoyed their best results at the halfway point of a season in two years.

Having failed to make last year’s finals in 11th position, McGregor accepted the club’s decision to undergo a comprehensive review at the end of last season.

As a result of the review, St George Dragons legend Mark Coyne was appointed to be part of a four-person committee signed to improve the club’s high performance.

McGregor also relinquished the role of recruitment.

He began the year hopeful — but far from confident — that as result of the player’s increased fitness levels, coupled with the arrival of talented hooker Cameron McInnes and hard-running prop Paul Vaughan, that he could show the Dragons hierarchy why he deserved to be retained beyond this season.

News of the contract extension caps an emotional and agonising week for McGregor, who sadly lost his mother Jean, to a stroke last weekend.

The Dragons are expected to announce McGregor’s new deal tomorrow ahead of their pubic holiday Monday clash with Canterbury at ANZ Stadium.

It's a waste of time Sheridan I emailed Doust a few days after our loss to the dogs re coach, rgrv etc etc & he more or less said as I wasn't a current red v member(I won't be again until changes) my opinions don't mean a hell of a lot. :flushed:
I just re read your post. If that is Dousts attitude you should email him back advising because he's a useless CEO you won't be renewing until a real CEO is in place!

Already done this. Told him if that's his attitude I will need to rethink my decisions to pay my way into kogarah & win to stand on the hill to support the players. Said I might use my $ to get Foxtel instead.
Asked him again my questions like if he was happy to miss the semis again.
Will the club ever be out of debt.
Does he approve of the coaches poor use of the bench.
Will the next coach be another of the ol boys brigade etc.
I think I might have hit a nerve.

That's one of the reasons the club has lost it's way. As a senior manager, you can't be a shrinking violet however, I would say members are stake holders in the club.

Instead of shutting you down, explain in some form why you should rejoin ie, give the club your hard earned.

I reckon he knows all this it but doesn't have the gumption to do anything about it. Why would he?? Firmly ensconced in his role, a compliant board, a ready made stooge(Mary)to be the inevitable fall guy. It's an ugly pattern that keeps repeating because of the lack of outsiders challenging what is going on.

This is a piece of journalistic rubbish written on behalf of the Dragons media spin doctors.
1. "Enjoyed best half way results for 2 years" - now we hold the record for the highest positioned club to miss out on making the finals.
The last six of those first 13 rounds were 3 losses in a row, win against the Warriors, a bye and a lucky win against the Tigers. That brought us to 3rd.
We all know what happened during the next 13 rounds.
2. "Which reflects the 49 year olds outstanding effort to inject new life into the Red V"
On what basis can that claim be made? What about season 2016?
3. Then we were subjected to a worthless "comprehensive review" with names like Mark Coyne being mentioned.
Why does a professional NRL coach need to be reviewed to that degree and managed in order to get results?
If things are that bad - time to get rid of him. Instead it was an exercise in rationalizing the original appointment and what seems to be a blinkered determination to persist with McGregor regardless of results.
4. McInnes and Vaughan - Both those players brought their best to the club and performed in 2017.
We still bombed out of finals contention even though we had the softest draw of any team in the comp.
Finally, after this great extension announcement was made, we played Canterbury and we dutifully lost...
This is just a cynical attempt to support decisions made by the board.
The silence in the media about McGregor's results and performance is deafening.

The only saving grace is that no matter what spin they put on McGregor's appointment it continues to bite them on the arse.

So in 2017, the team started off well, then disappeared into the abyss from about May, finally falling short of the top 8 once again. The absolute best possible result for 2018, and long term, is that we do the exact opposite. The team starts off terribly, a losing streak ensues, McGregor gets the chop around April/ May, we sign a decent coach and the form swings, seeing us surge into the top 8 late

This is the best outcome for the club in the short and long term. We need early losses

One semi final appearance since Wayne Bennett left the club one semi final in 6 years under mcidiot and chinless , what's also more alarming is how under these two morons the team has developed a losing trait against a few certain teams the dogs , the eels , Brisbane, Melbourne , this is simply unacceptable and this crap management need to find a proper coach Surely they must realise another year with McGregor is another waist of a year because success just ain't going to happen with him

It is all hard to fathom unless you try and think like them.
Someone (powerful) in Management probably from the Illawarra faction, pushed McGregor's barrow hard. This in spite of McGregor's pathetic CV with no tangible results or NRL experience.
Then when Demetriou surprised everyone with silverware last year it created a dilemma because the job was already promised to McGregor.
Whoever this joker and his supporters are internally, just bulldozed McGregor's appointment culminating in Demetriou's departure.
No consideration for aptitude, skill, results, experience - just another job for the boys.
No objective consideration for what's best for the club and what the fans may respond positively to.
Just a "we know what's best" attitude that has not worked.
We are the only club in the NRL that functions this way and that is why we have only once tasted finals footy in 6 years.
I hope I'm wrong but I can't see much changing until we get a qualified coach.
As for management, they are welded on like barnacles so private ownership is our only hope.
I sympathize...

That someone's name is Sean O'Connor. He's a long standing board member of the wildly unsuccessful and fraud-ridden Steelers Club, and of course a long-term director of the St George Illawarra Dragons. His qualifications include the fact he played a few games for the Steelers in the 80s, and he can sell houses

ST GEORGE Illawarra director Sean O’Connor believes the Dragons should back Paul McGregor to deliver the long-term vision for the club, rather than pursue a multimillion-dollar deal with Wayne Bennett.

Maybe this reporter should do a follow up story with Mr O'Connor to congratulate him on his vision of McGregor taking the club forward with continued success.
