PAUL MCGREGOR SIGNS TWO-YEAR DEAL TO REMAIN COACH OF ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA UNTIL 2019

PAUL McGregor has put an end to six months of uncertainty by remaining head coach of St George-Illawarra until the end of 2019 after inking a new two-year deal with the club.
Beginning 2017 without a deal for next season, a relieved McGregor informed the entire playing roster of the positive news during Wednesday’s training session in Wollongong.
The Dragons hierarchy ensured months of speculation over McGregor’s future could be resolved by formalising a deal over the last 24-hours which reflects the 49 year-old’s outstanding effort to inject new life into the Red-V.
Currently sitting third on the NRL ladder after 13-rounds, the Dragons have enjoyed their best results at the halfway point of a season in two years.

Having failed to make last year’s finals in 11th position, McGregor accepted the club’s decision to undergo a comprehensive review at the end of last season.
As a result of the review, St George Dragons legend Mark Coyne was appointed to be part of a four-person committee signed to improve the club’s high performance.
McGregor also relinquished the role of recruitment.
He began the year hopeful — but far from confident — that as result of the player’s increased fitness levels, coupled with the arrival of talented hooker Cameron McInnes and hard-running prop Paul Vaughan, that he could show the Dragons hierarchy why he deserved to be retained beyond this season.
News of the contract extension caps an emotional and agonising week for McGregor, who sadly lost his mother Jean, to a stroke last weekend.
The Dragons are expected to announce McGregor’s new deal tomorrow ahead of their pubic holiday Monday clash with Canterbury at ANZ Stadium.
This is a piece of journalistic rubbish written on behalf of the Dragons media spin doctors.
1. "Enjoyed best half way results for 2 years" - now we hold the record for the highest positioned club to miss out on making the finals.
The last six of those first 13 rounds were 3 losses in a row, win against the Warriors, a bye and a lucky win against the Tigers. That brought us to 3rd.
We all know what happened during the next 13 rounds.
2. "Which reflects the 49 year olds outstanding effort to inject new life into the Red V"
On what basis can that claim be made? What about season 2016?
3. Then we were subjected to a worthless "comprehensive review" with names like Mark Coyne being mentioned.
Why does a professional NRL coach need to be reviewed to that degree and managed in order to get results?
If things are that bad - time to get rid of him. Instead it was an exercise in rationalizing the original appointment and what seems to be a blinkered determination to persist with McGregor regardless of results.
4. McInnes and Vaughan - Both those players brought their best to the club and performed in 2017.
We still bombed out of finals contention even though we had the softest draw of any team in the comp.
Finally, after this great extension announcement was made, we played Canterbury and we dutifully lost...
This is just a cynical attempt to support decisions made by the board.
The silence in the media about McGregor's results and performance is deafening.
The only saving grace is that no matter what spin they put on McGregor's appointment it continues to bite them on the arse.
