Phil Gould’s Dragons review is complete. Eight staff changes — Paul McGregor’s not one of them
The Dragons’ season of hell is over — and so is the club’s controversial review of its football department and coach Paul McGregor.

The Dragons’ season of hell is over — and so is the club’s controversial review of the football department.

An exhaustive review, led by rugby league supremo Phil Gould, has resulted in eight staff changes.

Coach Paul McGregor, as expected, has retained his job after a shocking 15th place finish. He’ll be joined on the sidelines in 2020 by new assistant coach Shane Flanagan.

The eight changes are all in the club’s support staff system, including a new head physiotherapist, strength and conditioning coach and a “mind and performance” coach who will run meditation lessons.

“Everyone at the Dragons were terribly dissatisfied with the club’s 2019 season campaign which resulted in this wide-ranging internal and external review of the club’s football department,” said CEO Brian Johnston in a club statement.

“The Dragons have made key structural changes to its coaching, performance and medical staff following the determination of a lack of experience within the wider group. This includes several new staff appointments to the football department.t

“It was noted throughout the review that there needed to be a greater focus on club culture and leadership. In acknowledging this, the club have taken steps in this space in order to bring further accountability and discipline to the playing group.”

Despite the review, the Dragons are in somewhat of a salary cap bind. Their roster has six holes to fill, and not much money to play with.

Releasing Euan Aitken, Matt Dufty or Luciano Leilua would free up some cash but the club still has work to do to round out their 30-man first grade roster.

Whilst I wouldn't put it all on Hunt, I do wonder how the f**k we are even under cap pressure.

That's why my emphasis has been on the board and not the coach. It is just about universally agreed that Mary has been given a free ride.

Blame ? Board NOT Mary.

Capped out eh... Blame ? Board

We are a special breed. Running second last and leading into 2020, we have cap pressure. Any public company with stakeholders would have revolted and sacked the board.

And yet I hear from people on social media, that 2020 we will be a force. In the 70's we got to witness success, hell , even in the dark 80's we got to a GF, in the 90's we challenged the almighty Brisbane twice, Many and Melbourne.

We won it in 2010.

One decade on, and we are arguably the least destination target for players. UNLESS, they want overs or a retirement package.

An interesting article in todays Sunday Telegraph - McIdiot shouted a trip to the US so he wont be at trining when it starts this week. He is attending “A lecture from the UN in New York and a presentation from management of the US Olympic team will form part of Paul McGregor’s mission to lead the Dragons back to the finals. Such is the value in learnings that McGregor sees in the trip, the head coach will be absent from St George -Illawarra’s opening week of what is a career-defining pre-season training block - in the US instead with football manager Ben Harlan”. Usually trip like this are for successful coaches, a total waste of money by the club.

The lecture from the UN i can understand. They are as corrupt, lazy and a waste of money as our board are.

How this lecture and olympic committee stuff prepares you for game plans and NRL coaching pulling apart tactics from other teams and coming up with your own etc and help you plan for making the 8...defies me
Least when the successful coaches do this they visit and get invited to the most successful sporting teams
The Dragons worked out mcGregor does not need to be around. There are more adept people back here to do the job he cant do and ones players will actually listen to.
Flanno might not be allowed to be head coach, involved with recruitment etc but it does not stop him from passing his opinion on to someone that can through another mouth in Sheppard.who can speak to anybody and be anybody.(i.e. acting head coach while Mary is away and Flanno cant start work supposedly until 18 dec)......as i said before a strategic appointment by all
For Mary...Just a piss up junket and holiday to get them away from the important stuff of preparing a team from the getgo and he will fall asleep probably during the lecture and presentation anyway

Won’t make a difference how many lessons Fester has to improve his coaching skills if you haven’t got it u simply haven’t got it and six yrs of total failure is proof backed by the Moran calling 2018 as a Success and quoting we where (85 mins from a gf) let’s just say know team walloped at Kogarah 38 0 by the dogs and 38 to 4 vrs parramatta the wooden Sooners was ever going to win a gf under McGregor yet he called it a successful year
