Frankly I am appalled to just read that he is still coaching tonight, what a f**king pointless ridiculous final nail in the coffin to his poisonous tenure at this once great club. Once it is decided it is time then it is bloody time, this lingering dismissal is lame and without any point, God I hate what we have become since Wayne was snubbed out of the joint, they've been smoking joints.

McGregor 'uncomfortable' with controversial move

Brett Graham

Dumped St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor says the club's controversial selection panel process was a huge reason behind his decision to walk away from the Dragons.

McGregor, who will coach his last game tomorrow night when the Dragons play Parramatta, was close to tears as he spoke of his plans to visit his seriously ill father once he can leave the club's biosecurity bubble.

His axing was described as "not surprising" by premiership winning coach Phil Gould, who revealed he warned the club McGregor's tenure would end badly unless changes were made.

In June the club created a three-man selection panel, comprising McGregor and assistant coaches Shane Flanagan and Dean Young, after losing their first four matches of the season.

A brief resurgence followed, but the club has now lost its last three matches and would likely need a miracle to make the top eight.

"I wasn't comfortable with it," McGregor said when asked about the selection panel.

"I think the coach should get the final say on who is getting selected in the team. You have a coaching team and you need to lean on them.

"There should be hard conversation around that, but the coach selects the team.

"It's hard when you're owning your result, but not getting the team you want."

McGregor said he approached the club about changing the selection process, but the board decided the panel should remain.

"I wasn't dealing with that very well," McGregor said.

"When it gets to the stage where you can't pick a player in the position you feel he's right to play, it's probably not the right thing to coach.

"That's what's brought it to a head.

McGregor was contracted to the club until the end of the 2021 season. He took over from Steve Price in 2014, taking the club to the finals in 2015 and 2018.

He said he's looking forward to visiting his sick father on the weekend.

"Certainly it's been tough," McGregor said.

"My father is seriously ill. He's been in hospital for quite some time, so I need to go and see him. It's been in the back of my mind. It's part of it, it's not the only thing."

Chief executive Ryan Webb said it was tough to part ways with McGregor, who captained the club in the 1999 grand final.

"Paul has had a 25-year association with our club and the joint venture's founding club, the Illawarra Steelers and has shown great passion, integrity, character and a strong work ethic throughout this time," Webb said.

"He will forever be a part of the Dragons family."

Dean Young will take over for the rest of 2020. Webb said Young's father, Craig, excused himself from any board discussions about the coaching role. Craig will take a leave of absence from the board for as long as Dean is the coach.

How ironic that before this season started he opened his mouth with the quote:
I’m comfortable in the uncomfortable.

WTF now he uses the excuse as being uncomfortable with the selection panel!
A pure contradiction to deflect that he was Sacked. Pure deflection to the end.

Even during his departure speech he mentioned the Team he built in 2017 and 2018.
Came 9th in 2017 but under what circumstances?

Round 26 - 2017 vs Canterbury
Both Widdop and De Belin playing - they are two players that he constantly uses as an excuse when they were out. He had the team he wanted and fell off the cliff in the second half of the year.
Got rolled by the Dogs and got unceremoniously dumped out of the finals.
After that disastrous season, should have been sacked.
In stead, they saddled up for more of the same.
As you say, excuses even on the way out the door which hold no water.
Never qualified to coach FG in the first place and it took 7 dismal years to finally get rid of him.
Not really McGregor's fault if the Board kept renewing his contract and upgrading the money.
He will go down in the club's history as the worst coach we have ever had.

Great post Dennis

Thank god this Period is over!

Mary was never suited to coaching, far to stubborn to admit his faults and passed the blame.

In saying that, he does seem like a good bloke and I wish him and his family the best.

They can have him and the coaches as a package deal , and throw in the Gordons for good measure ..... The biggest bonus they are getting is that Mary is a good bloke , his good friend A. Gordon told us that .....

Am i right that Gordon was quoted yesterday and basically said his reappointment was done by the previous board ? Or did he throw Johnstone under the bus ?

Most likely both of the above DP.

Although there was one last throw of the dice in Andre’s mateship intervention this year one suspects

FMD we’ll miss that bus

(Although beware the BankWest exits tonight)

.... as it trundles off into the sunset

...with the 3 arselicking amigos Waterboy, Turnstile & Slowlai licking their desperate wounds

... & wondering how they got away with the farce for so long

Ain’t life great!

PS
IF Rothfield was right months ago in saying Bennett had put out feelers for 2021, then Wayne may well return,

....having already established a good relationship with Young, he may well be soon advising him on recruitment & the blooding of juniors

FMD 70 ain’t old!

Fan behind ‘Fail Mary’ banner believes Paul McGregor’s sacking will restore pride in Dragons jersey
Fatima Kdouh, The Daily Telegraph

George Youssif, the St George Illawarra fan behind the infamous ‘Fail Mary’ banner, believes the sacking of coach Paul McGregor is the first step to restoring pride in the Red V jersey.

Disgruntled fans like Youssif have been calling for the removal of McGregor for years.

They finally received the news they had longed to hear on Thursday after the club announced it would be parting ways with the coach after Friday night’s clash against Parramatta.

ThGeorge Youssif's 'Fail Mary' banner at Kogarah Oval.

“At the end of the day we want our club back, we want to celebrate our club and we want the glory days back. We want to be able to wear our jerseys with pride and go to the games with our kids and celebrate being proud Dragons fans,” Youssif said.

“It’s a step in the right direction to make St George Illawarra great again.”

Despite McGregor only managing to win eight of 31 matches, Youssif was sympathetic to McGregor’s plight and believes the little control he had over the roster and team selections ultimately cost the coach his job.

The passionate supporter said Dragon’s recruitment manager Ian Millward should be next on the chopping block.

Who should be the next Dragons coach?
Craig Fitzgibbon
Shane Flanagan
Dean Young
Wayne Bennett

“It is a sad situation for McGregor and I wish him all the best, all fans do. He could be the world’s best bloke but as a coach it didn’t work out well for him,” he said.

“In his defence, he didn’t have it all his way and I think the recruitment let him down. If Ian Millward doesn’t get his act together, he’s the next one who’s position should be questioned.”

Fellow Dragons fans Mick Attarian echoed Youssif’s concerns that the club had great issues than coaching – as Phil Gould’s review of the club exposed in last 2019.

Gus was correct. The club’s problems run deeper than the coach,” Attarian said on Twitter.

Dragons fans have now turned their attention to who should take over as head coach for season 2021 and beyond.

Youssif’s first choice would be a proven premiership winner like Craig Bellamy but he would also like see current assistant coach Shane Flanagan, who won a title at Cronulla in 2016, take over.

“I’d be throwing the bank at Bellamy, he’s one of the best. I don‘t see any issues with Dean Young as an interim but Flanagan is probably the first choice because he is already there and knows the club,” he said.

For what its worth, I'd be going to Craig Fitgibbon and the Roosters, sitting down and say what's it going to take. Absolutely respect his loyalty but this opportunity may not come again for him, an absolute fit is now available. #redv

But Red V fan Christopher Werrell believes the club should target Trent Robinson’s right hand man, Craig Fitzgibbon as the new Dragons coach.

For what its worth, I‘d be going to Craig Fitgibbon and the Roosters, sitting down and say what’s it going to take. Absolutely respect his loyalty but this opportunity may not come again for him, an absolute fit is now available,” he said.

NRL cool on Flanagan return as Bennett backs 'real deal' Young
Adam Pengilly and Adrian Proszenko
August 14, 2020 — 7.12pm

The NRL is prepared to block any push for Shane Flanagan's head-coaching ban to be lifted as super coach Wayne Bennett provided a glowing endorsement of Dean Young, claiming he is the "real deal", as the Dragons search for a new coach.

A day after St George Illawarra chairman Andrew Gordon said the club would seek clarity from the NRL over Flanagan's registration, league sources were adamant on Friday there was little appetite to allow him to apply for head-coaching positions next year.

Paul McGregor coached his last game for the Dragons against the Eels at Bankwest Stadium on Friday night, with the club's board to form a committee to find his replacement.

While Flanagan has not yet asked NRL officials about his status for next year - he is unable to return as a head coach until 2022 for breaching the conditions of a suspension after Cronulla's peptides scandal - his current employer is keen for guidance. The Dragons probably won't get the answer they want.

But they would have liked what they heard from the game's most successful coach Bennett, who leant on Young as one of the Dragons' most influential players when they broke their title drought in 2010.

Privately, Flanagan has been pushing the claims of his fellow assistant Young, who will take charge of the Dragons for the final six games of the season. Flanagan has worked alongside Young this year and has also been pivotal in Tonga's ascent recently in the international game.

"He is respected because he is the real deal," Bennett said. "He has great empathy and he stands for something."

Young's father Craig has excused himself from the St George Illawarra board until they appoint a new coach.

Bennett remains close with many of the players from his premiership-winning Dragons side, bringing Young's former teammate Ben Hornby onto South Sydney's coaching staff this year.

Asked about Young's suitability for the job, Gordon said: "The club will welcome him to step up and show what his capabilities are, as hard as it is to come in at this stage of the season. We are absolutely looking forward to letting him demonstrate his capabilities.

"We will also see who comes out of the woodwork. People may put their hand up and we will take it from there. We will take advantage of the time we have to come to the right decision after looking at the available pool of coaching talent."

Roosters assistant Craig Fitzgibbon has already ruled himself out, agreeing to honour a deal with chairman Nick Politis and coach Trent Robinson to see out his contract until the end of 2021.

Meanwhile, the Dragons have officially shut the door on a return for Gareth Widdop after securing the services of one of the game’s most promising playmakers.

The Dragons have re-signed local product Junior Amone to a three-year deal that will result in him being guaranteed a top-30 spot no later than 2022.

Several rival clubs were jockeying for Amone’s signature, but the 18-year-old opted to stay put.

Amone is related to South Sydney prop Tom Amone and Manly’s Fainu brothers, Manase and Sione.

The Illawarra junior steered the club’s SG Ball side to last year’s premiership playing alongside halves partner Jayden Sullivan, another gun junior who could be in contention for an NRL debut in coming weeks.

The opportunity to potentially play first grade alongside Sullivan, who is also signed to the Red V long term, was too enticing for the five-eighth to turn down.

The Dragons want to focus on developing their own talent and are banking on late bloomer Adam Clune, who recently recommitted to the Red V, and the young playmakers to steer the club back to the top.
