I’m no Football guru. Just another armchair fan. But it doesn’t take a guru or genius to recognise that signing players from the team that came last the year before isn’t really going to help you go forward the next year. Especially when they are unwanted by the team that came dead last!

Yeah I was there at the southern end, with 1 minute to go Benji was running criss cross back n forth appearing to go no where. All the dragons supporters were yelling just tackle him.

The dragons players seemed to think he was going nowhere and let him go back and forth. Suddenly he found a half break. He then spotted a big forward and threw a great pass and instant trouble! The forward passed to Beau Ryan and he only had to draw and pass and we were toast. My heart sank. Then Beau Ryan kicked ahead and I looked saw Darius turn quickly with 2 metres headstart on the tigers support players. Yes we were safe!

I knew no body on the park would match Darius speed. He led the chase and chucked the ball into the crowd behind the dead ball line. We survived and then won the comp. Still have nightmares of that last minute!

Prelim final
Wrong Rocket. The preliminary final was played at the then named ANZ Stadium on 25th September 2010 which was won by the Dragons 13-12 and 71,212 were in attendance -

Of all the games I have watched in my life the last 10 minutes of that particular game are etched in my memory most of all. My son and I just begging the clock to wind down to full time…….If I had my way there’d be a statue of Soward in front of Kogarah oval for what he did that game.

Yes, what a night and what an enthralling game. It was brilliant to watch at ANZ with the big crowd in attendance. Jason Nightingale was my hero as he was in the grand final. Jamie kicking that field goal did the trick.

Please correct me if I'm wrong however, the semi between the two teams in 2010 was 70,000 at Accor.

The good old days.
Noteable Prelim crowds between 2 Sydney clubs played at Homebush:

2009: Dogs V Eels 74,549

2010: Dragons V Tigers 71,212

2012: Dogs V Souths 70,354

2013: Souths V Manly 44,546

2014: Souths V Easts 52,598 (games biggest rivarly? LOL)
Dogs V Panthers 46,168

2022
Panthers V Souths 50,035

Obvious that the four 'Big' Clubs are Dogs, Eels, Dragons & Tigers

We are not a happy club.
We are not a well run club.
We are not a well coached club.

We are in dire straights I'm fully expecting a wooden spoon coming our way next year, we have a worse coaching staff next year lost 2 of our biggest mongrel forwards replaced them with 2 wooden spoon signings, our team can't even attend a friggin awards night we are clearly divided, I think I'll take a sabbatical next year why bother investing My time and energy into this team when quiet clearly the people in charge don't even give the remotest s**t.

I wonder how many times times I’ve felt that way around this time of year.

And then, like the idiotic optimist that I am, February rolls around and I start to get excited for the season. Thinking that surely this year we will get it right.

I think we all have the same feelings SBD but more so this particular time of year (2022) and then as you say in Feb next year we will get excited or enthused for another season. We are just gluttons for punishment methinks.

Both of the jv's/mergers were sold a dummy by the NRL when they were enticed to join.

Both have been abject failures.

I actually don't blame the management of either side, because after the Super League war every club was vulnerable. At the time, even if I didnt like it, I understood the rationale.

Decades later and let's be frank. Stand alone clubs like Manly, Cronulla, Souths, Easts, and even the 2004 Bulldogs have all won premierships, so its not as if the "local" clubs just folded. Penrith and Parra have massive memberships and facilities. Look at the 2 merged entities. look at their facilities, management, development and direction.

Its been disastrous, barring one highlight each between the 4 teams/2 Clubs.
Stumbled across this thread and find it really interesting; but of a geek when it comes to organisational structure.

I’m not disagreeing; just asking a genuine question. What should the league have done better to help the merged sides compete? Both have had successful periods. From the outside it looks like it is a failure of governance with the Boards battling internally rather than facing outwards.

But I am not as close to it as others, or gave a handle on what was promised to either club on merging.

Im not absolving the boards mate. They are complicit.

But i was very close to the Club in the late 90's and recall being told that it wasn't a question of IF Clubs in Sydney would dissolve but when.

In essence the NRL would be a smaller version of the NFL. Big clubs controlling larger areas, top notch facilities, etc etc etc. The playing stock would be split between 14-16 Clubs covering all of the country.

Manly and Norths was a disaster. Manly survived and thrived with titles to boot.

My point is, as pathetic as our management has been, the "vision and urgency" that was sold to the teams that joined forces was misguided at best.

As you say both of the teams we mention have had success at times, but if you look closely at their achievements they are not greater and in most cases, worse than other stand alone Sydney clubs, which refutes the selling point by the newly formed NRL at the time.
