Sandow needs to learn lessons other dropped Eels have shunned

Daniel Mortimer and Anthony Mitchell moved from Parramatta to Sydney Roosters to avoid playing NSW Cup but there they were at Henson Park on Saturday helping Newtown defeat Manly 42-10.
Krisnan Inu is another who didn't relish the idea of turning out for Wentworthville and made the decision to join good mate Feliti Mateo at the Warriors last season after it became evident they weren't among former Eels coach Daniel Anderson favourites.
Inu has since spent almost as much time playing NSW Cup for the Auckland Vulcans as he has with the Warriors, but without the negative headlines and stigma associated with being dropped from Parramatta's NRL team.
In 2009, Brett Finch sought a mid-season release after Anderson suggested his position in the Eels top team was not guaranteed, while prop Shane Shackleton is on the lookout for a new club before the June 30 transfer deadline after just one appearance in Parramatta's top grade so far this year.
Winger Luke Burt and lock Justin Horo are others who have been regulars for the Magpies this season and now Chris Sandow has also had the experience of playing at Ringrose Park.
The axing of Sandow, Parramatta's $550,000 per season halfback recruit, has led to claims that the Eels are a club in crisis and sparked speculation about Stephen Kearney's future as coach.
Some have even said it may be a defining moment in his coaching career - depending on how Sandow and the Eels react.
Yet why is a stint in second grade seen as such a low point at Parramatta compared to other clubs?
Manly prop George Rose, a member of last year's grand final winning team, made his first NRL appearance in last Friday night's 12-10 defeat of Canterbury but hardly a word had been written about his situation.
And few people would know that the week before, when Kearney had initially wanted Sandow to play for Wentworthville, six members of the Penrith side beaten by Wests Tigers the previous weekend were named for Windsor Wolves and Tigers centre Blake Ayshford lined up with Balmain-Ryde.
Besides Mortimer and Mitchell, who were both granted releases by the Eels to give them the chance to play NRL elsewhere, winger Justin Carney - lured from Canberra on good money in 2010 - and Tom Symonds, a rare Roosters junior - also played for Newtown last weekend.
Obviously, Sandow's pay packet and the expectations of him at Parramatta justify the attention his demotion to Wentworthville after just seven games has attracted, but comments made by Shackleton and Mitchell on social media highlight a greater issue at the club.
Shackleton responded to a question about why he wasn't in the top team by writing on Facebook that "Kearney is a f--kwit", while Mitchell tweeted before the round two match against the Warriors: "How Horo, [Jordan] Atkins and Shackleton aren't playing 2night is a joke. Even worse is Parramatta legend Luke Burt isn't in the team. Wat's doing?"
Shackleton has since apologised to Kearney and been assured the comments won't be held against him at the selection table but the fact he made them underlines the attitude may Parramatta players seem to have to playing NSW Cup.
Rather than go back to Wentworthville on work on the areas that Kearney believes they need to improve on to force their way back into first grade, many of them have continued doing the same things that saw them dropped.
So far, Burt is the only one to earn a recall after playing in yesterday's 31-30 loss and it remains to be seen what impact Sandow's NSW Cup stint will have on him.
But Parramatta's greatest halfback Peter Sterling believes playing for Wentworthville could benefit the former South Sydney playmaker.
"In the old days if you were struggling for form you went back to reserve grade so I think you can go back there and get some confidence back," Sterling told Triple M.
"He came across with a lot of expectation, he is a big name signing and it has only been a short period of time so he is probably still finding his feet.
"I am hoping he goes back and has a couple of blinders for Wentworthville and he comes back with his chest out, his head up and is ready to go."

That is the problem. Those in power see Wenty as a "purgatory" to get your game right instead of the tool that it could and has previously been used as.

Key Lesson , do not be lured by more money to leave a club you actually like to join a basket case. Consider Foran , he has rejected the bigger $$ to stay and Manly .

The culture comes from those at the top. The players can by into that culture, and be affected by it, those that buck the trend are out there. Don't put words or your own assumption of my words into my mouth.

Do you think the blokes in the 2008 Grand Final at Wenty look back on that time as "purgatory"? They saw it as a way to impress and stake a claim, a fair proportion of them did and are now playing regular first grade.

Clubs like the Bulldogs put a great deal of emphasis on their "feeder" teams, and a larger number of their squad get out there to watch and encourage those on the fringes. I have seen Eels players at Wenty, don't know if it is encouraging though.

The players have their own responsibilities, and we have seen players like Luke Burt and Shane Shackelton take on the challenge, but these at the moment appear to be the rare instances and not the norm.

Yep if only the powers could show the same positive attitude as shame Shackleton the club would n'e much better off.

It would be very useful if the CEO called the coach a f**kwit and asked for a release.

You make some very good points

I'd say its most of the media and fans that see demotion to Wenty as Purgatory, this article excluded

That would answer the prayers of many an Eels supporter.

Mark,

1. Who is Bob Bentley? Where did he come from? What is your opinion of him?
2. Did Pirtek push for Bentley?
3. How much of a problem is Pirtek within our club.

I obviously dont expect you to know all the intricacies of the club, but are you able to answer the above with the knowledge you have?

As far as I know, Mr Bentey was the HR manager at the Blue Mountains council before is was appointed to the position of Leagues Club HR manager in early 2010. When Trulio was fired Mr Bentley as HR manager had to work to hire a new CEO. I do not know that inner workings of the process, but I do understand the position was advertised, some members of this message board did indeed apply and in the end Mr Bentley was appointed as CEO.

My opinion, Mr Bentley is hard to get a read of, I have spoken to him a number of times and I just don't have a clear view of the man just yet.

Did Pirtek push for Mr Bentley, not as far as I am aware, Mr Bentley was appointed before Mr Duncan was appointed to the Leagues Club board.

How big a problem is Pirtek? I don't know what you mean, but I do know this, our club trumpted the re-signing of Pirtek as our major sponsor early 2010 after the golden run of 2009, and some in the know hinted the deal was our first ever 7 figure per year sponsorship deal. This year marks the 8th year (05 - 12) with Pirtek, and they have another year to go (2013) before their sponsorship is up for renewal.

The NRL needs a genuine reserve grade comp that plays right before first grade.

It has been noted on this board that Pirtek pull a lot of strings at the club and considering the role they played in osbourne's sacking, i would agree that this is correct. it has been said that Kearney would have been sacked if it was not for pirtek. i also wonder about the fact that Pirtek sponsors the Kiwi's. Kearney coaches the Kiwi's. both the Kiwi team and our team are underperforming.

im not saying sack Kearney, i believe his long term goals will be beneficial for the club if acheived. i just wonder whether another coach could implement the same goals but also get better results at the present time.

also, that Bob Bentley situation reeks. Couldnt find a suitable CEO so he hired himself? i know this wouldnt have been his decision alone. i wonder what experience he has in running two major concerns simultanously like he currently is.

The NRL need a genuine Reserve Grade again.....the Wenty step down is too far to truly benefit the game and the step up from Toyato Cup is often too far for young, inexperienced players

He's had four good games and three quiet ones. That's pretty good for a brand new halfback.

Sandow's only young and we've got him for four years. He's a long term prospect and when the salary cap goes up he won't even be on a big contract.

He's still our best ever signing.
