Save Leichhardt Oval

STADIUM PLANS

The Wests Tigers look like they’re going to be playing up to four games a year at CommBank Stadium from next season.

That’s judging by the proposal CEO Shane Richardson put to the board earlier this week.

The pitch for Wests Tigers home games next season was four games at CommBank, four games at Campbelltown, three games at Leichhardt Oval and one game at Suncorp Stadium for Magic Round.

As for our colleague Brent Read’s assertion giving Leichhardt Oval $40 million is like putting lipstick on a pig – it’s time for Ready to get down to OPSM and get a new set of glasses.

Clearly someone has stolen his bifocals so he’s legally blind and can’t see what it means to the thousands of Wests Tigers members and fans who turn up at the Eighth Wonder of the World no matter what.

Tribalism and tradition are two of the best things about rugby league.

There’s nothing better than the old school charm of suburban football at Leichhardt Oval, Penrith, Shark Park, Brookvale Oval, Jubilee Oval, Redcliffe or Wollongong.

Lipstick on a pig is standing behind the glass of a corporate box where you can hear a pin drop and pretending you’re interested in the game.

Thank goodness Peter V’landys and Andrew Abdo are huge supporters of suburban grounds.

No cranky hankies are allowed to use them. And only women who have all the women bits can use them so keep out macca.
Does that mean there are men friendly toilets there already.... Good grief what is the world coming to.
Come to LO, we have the friendliest toilets in the NRL.

Apart from the northern end stand, there's not that much of a difference. Richo wanted heaps of corporate boxes but this doesn't reflect it.
I thought a grandstand surrounding the ground should look like The Roman Colosseum, it would be awesome.
Corporate on the top of the stands that go around 360⁰ and can go over the top of the hill and incorporate the old scoreboard. The Gabba has something similar where seats are under the stands. Meaning you can enjoy the atmosphere of the old hill and not get wet when it rains. The grass would get enough sun after midday to sunset.
I guess what I'm suggesting would cost a tad more than what the funding is :)

Without the hill, it's just another small stadium.

Yes, of course, the hill would still be there as would the old scoreboard. The stand goes around and over the top of it. The front part of the hill is in the open and as you go back to the scoreboard the stand goes over the top. It wouldn't work on the Western side as there wouldn't be enough sun for the grass to grow.

I thought the same thing. When you look at the architectural mock up, you wonder where the $50 million has gone? Or maybe they're using the same company that charged the state govt dept of education $100,000 to build a colourbond garden shed? Or maybe the same company that was charging the CIA $300 for a plastic dunny seat.

When you have a small ground, and to increase it's viewing capacity there is only one way and that is up. A Colosseum. The hill can still be preserved.
You have a look at a basketball game. Even in Australia we the RAC Arena in Perth and it has a seating capacity of 14,500 fans.
So my theory is we could accommodate 25k fans easy.

The only hiccup I would imagine is $ and council restrictions because it has housing and views restrictions etc.
