SBW will not play again this year

Gallop has just been heard on 2GB issuing a full life ban for SBW - stating he will not be playing NRL again for the duration of his playing days.

how then can the canterbury club sue for damages?

if hes not allowed to return to play for canterbury then wont the courts award less damages?

If SBW decides to 'honour' his contract.

I believe the bulldogs should bench him for every game in the NSW Cup. Throw him away into obscurity - legally.

How does a player with a manager sign a contract for $500K a year under duress? Strike me down, that's the best I've heard in all this...

Pay, McCracken and Dymock did in 1995. If you ask me, SBW doesn't have a dodgy knee to stand on in trying to claim it, but thats the line Weidler was running.

its not just the dogs and the loss of crowds and sponsors.

its the nrl and the kiwi team too.

but has gallop just wrecked the case.

as a former lawyer youd think he had an idea what hes doing?

and thurston on top of the rest?

f**k me.

That was the first thing I thought. I think it's time for Gallop to shut his mouth and let the lawyers sort this out.

settle down.

Gallop said that he wouldn't be allowed to play anywhere for the duration of current contract.

NRL/Bulldogs are all in the right here. They can sue the French RU club (I believe its Toulon) in Australian courts for inducement of breach of contract. They should also be able to get an injunction against SBW playing anywhere else even without him being present.

before the NRL he ran the legal department of Australia's largest media corporation, so if there was ever a time for Gallop to be in charge of something, its now.

Gallop knows what he is doing...

He is a lawyer ffs so he knows what will and wont affect the proceedings

well how do you propose to stop it? or compete with million dollar contracts?

we can't. so stop trying. let them have two years and make a million and come home. better to 'lose' a player for a year or two than forever.

it's the same approach they've started using in aussie law firms to avoid losing all their best new kids to richer british and american firms.

and it works because in the end almost everyone WANTS to come back. as opposed to the situation now where if they do leave they're basically chased with torches and pitchforks and branded a traitor. that's not exactly gonna encourage them to come back is it?

good point, never considered it that way but you're right. as ive said before with the american football idea, you need to create pathways that ensure we don't lose the talent to the game forever

We shall see, he obviously knows a lot more about the situation than any of us. I'm of the opinion that when emotions are running high and the situation is a little unclear it's best not to make any official statments, atleast until the dust settles.

if the nrl doesnt issue massive damages against SBW then other players will do the same.

if SBW has to fight a multi million dollar damages case and the club which signed him too encouraged him to breach a legal contract, we want to make sure we do nothing to harm that.

he knows nothing about international law and has been quoted as such on this previously. being a lawyer doesn't mean that you are an expert on everything related to the legal professionn

what does he need to know about international law? SBW's contract is in Australia, if he breaches the contract he is breaching Australian law.

yes, but he is quoted as saying that he doesn't know what power they will have from stopping him playing OS. that is the crux of what gallop wants to do

I think he was just saying they hadn't worked out the specific legal avenues they would pursue. Ideally they would want it kept out of a French court with their wacky legal system.

Did I say that?

In terms of suing him in a civil court, Gallop knows what he is talking about.
