Season Review

Yes but we dont want to fall into the trap of having to pay players we move on so we have to look at contracts expiring and move them on once that happens.
remember i can't remember Normans deal but i bet it wasn't much and that would need to be looked at and increased soon. So do we pay Widdop dollars to keep him ??? if so there's a huge bite out of our cap.
If you want to change our halves dynamic, sign Maloney for 2 years and watch the difference.
Widdop is already committed elsewhere and unlikely to go back to playing under the likes of Mcgregor.

Did I hear correctly that part of the reasoning behind McGregor having his contract extended was his winning percentage. Of current NRL and potential coaches he had the best winning percentage of coaches who had not already won a premiership. So in the eyes of the board he was performing better than all other available candidates?

The announcement made after three straight wins, two of them by one point and the thrashing of the Bulldogs. Seems oddly convenient timing when largely nobody is negotiating deals in particular players after only 5 rounds of football. Since then a lucky last minute win against Manly, a good win against the hapless Dogs, a reasonable win against the Cowboys mixed in with 9 losses. Would the board hold the same view now when the season has had time to breathe and player managers are indeed turning their mind to future seasons. You'd have to think not

We are paying both Norman and Widdop at the moment which is about $1.15 million. Next year we have Norman which was reported as $700K, that means there will be approx. $450K freed up.
Yes! However, we were only paying 200k of Normans salary this year and 700k for the years 2020 and 2021. So we will be up about 200k on the Norman for Widdop deal.

Penrith will not release him ...they would be crazy to do this..unless they allow him to go to England which jimmy has stated he wants to do.

You can bet the CEO and Board knew exactly what they were doing. Just imagine trying to justify a 2 year extension now, members/fans would be in a complete uproar.

You give them too much credit.....if they were that Savvy we would have TPA's lined up and a Marquee coach.......

I believe Penrith have already released him to play in ESL next year and that there is a hiccup at the ESL end. So not sure if he is staying or if he is a free agent.

Well.. Gould and others have suggested that he will be staying on longer @ Penrith.....So I guess time will tell.

Hunt, Norman,Maloney at once ?? really you'll do McGregors head in lol, He'll probably have Maloney at Fullback with Dufty as the impact player on the bench .... same as this year !! Please don't confuse him anymore ha ha

Soward wants full review into Dragons
  • National Sport News

Jamie Soward has stuck the boot into the Dragons, saying the club needs a top-to-toe evaluation.
Struggling St George Illawarra's impending review needs to be a top-to-toe analysis of the NRL club, former playmaker Jamie Soward believes.

The Dragons board is set to meet on Tuesday to begin a review of their 2019 season.

The Dragons were thumped 40-18 by Penrith on Friday - a result that leaves them 14th on the ladder with just six wins.

Dragons chief executive Brian Johnston has said the future of coach Paul McGregor won't be up for discussion as part of the review, but Soward feels every aspect of the club should be put under the microscope.

"The Dragons are a mess. It hurts me to say this ... they're just in a shambles," Soward told Macquarie Sports Radio.

"The internal review needs to go through the whole club from top to bottom regardless of your position."

A premiership winner with the Dragons in 2010, Soward fell out with then coach Steve Price in 2013 and left the club before finishing his NRL career at Penrith.

The Dragons have endured a season which began with Jack De Belin being stood down under the NRL's 'no-fault' policy before captain Gareth Widdop was sidelined with a shoulder injury.

Despite those woes, Soward said there's no doubt the team shouldn't be scrapping at the bottom of the ladder with strugglers like Gold Coast.

"The Dragons have got a roster at the moment that should be a top four team - a top five team at worst - and they haven't been able to put the results on," Soward said.

"The thing for Dragons fans is, they haven't got any big recruits coming next year, this is their team next year.

"There's been some guys there that have been re-signed, held on to and put in the team that haven't improved. That's why they're currently 14th.

"They're in real danger of the Titans just jagging one or two games after some stars get rested going in and the Dragons not going well and they're in a fight for the spoon."

I see the CEO has come out in defence of the coach and basically said the buck stops with him. Strong words, let’s see if he follows through on them. One option for him may be to commission an independent review into the running of the club. If he really wants to ramp it up then make the results available to all members.

He’s got to step aside as well.
