Second Brisbane Club

Mal Meninga is against a second team in Brisbane. The comments are interesting because the Brisbane Bombers had floated the idea of Meninga being their inaugural head coach if they entered the competition. Meninga makes the argument that league clubs are struggling at the moment and they should be consolidated before looking for expansion. He has a point, it was reported NRL clubs made losses of 53.4 million dollars last year.

"KANGAROOS coach Mal Meninga is against having a second Brisbane team in the NRL in the immediate future and says it’s more important ensure the survival of Sydney’s traditional old clubs.

It’s a surprise because many in the game consider Meninga would be the perfect figurehead to launch a new Brisbane side to challenge the Broncos’ monopoly which gives them such a huge advantage over their 15 rivals.

“If tradition is going to be part of our mantra going forward, time, effort and resources need to put into the team’s that are currently struggling,” Meninga says.
“Let’s get them back to where they should be

“Once we get the Knights and Wests Tigers back to where they should be and their fans can go to a game every week and think they’re a chance of winning then we can start looking at expansion

“There’s enough room in Brisbane for two teams but I’m not sure there’s enough players to go around at the moment.”

Meninga against his old sparring partner Wayne Bennett would be a promoter’s dream in the Brisbane market. Bigger than Sydney FC v the Wanderers or GWS v the Swans.

“I love the game so I’d be interested in any role,” Meninga said. “I’d never go back to club coaching, not for a million dollars.

“I like what I’ve got know, it’s less stressful and it allows me more time to be with my young family.

“Maybe in a club role like Gus (Gould) where he oversees the football department … something like that would be appealing.”

Interesting that News Ltd own paper issues a message against a second Brisbane club as competition against News Ltd owned Broncos

Take this article with grain of salt

I think Mal has put as much thought into that comment as he put into his "what has Rugby League done for me?" comment and his decision to go into politics.

Is it true that after the Crushers went defunct, the Broncos / News Ltd bought the name and colours of the Crushers so no one else could use them?

Do you reckon this is part of the AFL contra?

Didn't hear that one

Just the 20 year NRL peace deal that said no 2nd Brisbane team was allowed when Crushers were axed in 1996

QRL were the owners of the Crushers

I hate this argument. Incomes have grown massively over the years and clubs just push their spending up with it

Clubs arent interested in breaking even because they dont have to and it would make them uncompetitive.

If that it the benchmark we are gonna set on expansion, we'll still be waiting when Judgment Day comes...

What a crock of shit. SOMEONE needs to be at the bottom of the ladder...

When the Knights and whoever else move off the bottom, someone else will take their place. Thats not being pessimistic, that is the fundamental idea of the ladder.

Again, waiting for Judgment Day.

Exactly.

All these clubs have got football managers (like Gould) now. The only job of a football manager is to think up new ways to spend money (most obvious is a gold plated gym called an centre of excellence).

Plus most of the overall "loss" is by clubs with massive leagues clubs who have no reason to contain spending. Its either on the NRL club or some other club in the district (AFL?) or more pokie machines.

The NRL clubs and Leagues clubs just provide the detail of "losses" to the media whenever it suits them for some agenda. Like "we need a bigger NRL club grant" or "we can't have expansion".

Ok I've seen all these comments about a second Brisbane team playing out of Suncorp being a must, in my opinion it's the worst idea I've ever heard.

A few reasons, I'm from the Redcliffe area, no one likes travelling into Brisbane fighting traffic for games, Redcliffe and Ipswich aren't even in Brisbane to start. It's the same reason you get poor crowds in Sydney.

Also I'm sure the Ipswich and Moreton bay areas even include the Sunshine Coast into the Moreton Bay Area, would need a stadium in those areas of growth, they need it in those regions, why have a home game an hour away from the actual region ? Why would people get behind that team ?. Upgrade dolphin oval , it's already a decent stadium holding close to 15,000 people. Please figure out coming from a diehard league fan, who is a local , a second Brisbane team playing out of Suncorp won't work, unless the team base is actually in Brisbane city.

Nah, we need 9 teams in Brisbane; one for every suburb, just so poor shmucks like you dont need to drive more than two street.

Oh the tragedy, misery thy name. How dare the NRL ever even consider utilising the bet RL stadium in the world and forcing poor, dejected souls from the outer suburbs to make such a pilgrimage every Saturday night.

I demand a sacrifice. VIVA LA REVOLUTION!!!

:flushed:, ever wondered why rugby league has garbage live crowds ? Maybe it's because of such forward thinking people like yourself , ignore what people want.... that's smart, all because you have a great stadium :ok_hand:, which a rival team already calls home, ok mate.. I'm sure it's gonna work

the point is not no to a second Brisbane team, its about this idea of it being Redcliffe, or Ipswich, or Sunny Coast, and then playing out of lang park. Need to figure out a way to make a genuine second team relevant, and geography is not the answer because even though the Broncos are based at Red hill, their support (and opposition) is pretty evenly distributed throughout Brisbane - and Redcliffe, and Ipswich. Someone needs to be creative and think outside the square about what a second Brisbane team will look like. Brisbane is not Sydney, because even though it is scaled down, the old Brisbane clubs are still mostly playing so people with that sense of geographical nostalgia and tribalism still get to have that every weekend, while simultaneously supporting or hating the broncos.
They probably need to do what Melbourne did in the sense they have become a lot of peoples pseudo second Brisbane team (even though theres a shit load more NSW/NZ players than Qlders in it, but hey whatever works), but actually be in Brisbane, and engage with Brisbane. I don't like the idea of Brothers, because I f**king hated Brothers in the day, but thats just me. I do however think people would maybe latch onto Valleys if it somehow was reborn - I'm not an old Valleys fan, but to me they are the ultimate icon of Brisbane Rugby league (and up until Souths premiership in 2014, had more premierships than the Rabbitohs, but hey, its only in the Brisbane comp so we can't recognise them as the most succesful club of all time). Base them back at Alan Border oval, which used to be their old home before Qld Cricket took it over, and re engage.

Great iconic logo too imo.

Any new club has to be able to attract 20k+ fans and strong corporate support or they'll be dead in the water. Only way to do that is at suncorp and with a broad geographical appeal. Works in Perth and Adelaide for AFL so no reason the same model wouldn't work in Brisbane.

Yes, forward thinking = doing what Sydney clubs have been doing for 100 years

It is interesting to see what you consider to be "forward thinking". We have basically 2 models of club; centralised club (Broncos, who regularly get 30K) and suburban club (Tigers/Panthers/Manly/Sharks, who generally average around 13k)

How innovative to follow the 13k path...

I dont think its all that necesary to pick a team everyone loves, id even say that is detrimental to the team...

Love or hate, a team needs to inspire emotion. The worst thing a team can be is innocuous; my Knights are just that, no one hates us, so no one cares when we are playing against their team (Titans are an even better example. so innocuous, they inspire no emotion at all). Its far better to be like the Dragons/Rabbits/Manly; anyone who doesnt love them will probably hates them, so all of their games are worth watching.

Having said that, DieHards would be a pretty good brand as well (Just dont run away from the clubs history for fear of offending people).

And if not them, we could use the BRL Unities/Combined Brisbane rep jumper/logo to represent the entire BRL

Combined_Brisbane_Division_Poinsettia_Badge.jpg

Oldest RL brand in QLD and it represents the comp that the Broncos killed/usurped...

(Using the old "Brisbane Firsts" name would be great too. basically saying "f*ck the Broncos, we are the original Brissy team")

Totally disagree mate, Sydney clubs play out of anz ? They don't have identities anymore, Brisbane is a completely different market to Sydney anyway lol. If you want a new teams fans to travel a good hour to a so called home ground your dreaming mate, it's the lazy cheap option to put a second Brisbane team at Suncorp, watch the nrl do that and watch it fail, then you can come back and apologies lol.

I like that idea of a second Brisbane/SEQ club being a united BRL team that the Broncos killed off.

QRL could be behind some or all of it and it could be a direct feeder to the clubs not already aligned with GC or Broncos.

Call the team Brisbane United with the old Q shaped badge as above

Yeh, Souths, Dogs and Parra clearly are being ruined by lack of interest.

They are only doubling the attendance of the wonderful suburban clubs....
