Agree but of course the inherent danger comes into it.

The shoulder charge law exists for player safety. Feki was not put in a harmful position by Slater. That brings into question why he is being charged under this law.

If it's purely because he led with his shoulder, Slater can argue why he was put in that situation - saving a try while preserving his own safety, without endangering the attacker.

He did 'endanger' the tacker. The shoulder charge is dangerous, that's why it's not allowed. This danger in this tackle was probably mitigated by the fact that Slater is a little dude tackling a much bigger man. But that has f**k all to do with anything.

Slater will miss one game.

Storm will announce a Slater/Smith testimonial to be played on Friday against the Dapto Canaries, with all gate takings going to Smith.

Slater will play for 5 mins before half time, and having served his one game ban, will be able to play in the Grand Final.

Questions will then be raised why Smith didn't play in his own testimonial, but will be cleared once realised he was holding a $1000 per head lunch across town

https://www.nrl.com/news/2017/02/04/nrl-statement-on-shoulder-charge/

Here are the highlights.

• The contact is forceful, and;
• The player did not use, or attempt to use, his arms (including his hands) to tackle or otherwise take hold of the opposing player.

Strike one and two there.

"As a game, we are committed to outlawing the shoulder charge, and we believe these changes will make it easier for us to do so," Mr Canavan said.

Tough stance that one. They are committed people!

"Should a player make forceful contact and in the process fail to use or attempt to use his arms to do so, he will be charged with a shoulder charge."

There you have it, fairly black and white.

It comes down to whether or not they want to apply the black and white ruling, or the circumstantial ruling.

Black and white it's a shoulder charge, circumstantially he had no other option, let's see which route they take

Simple question - has every player who has committed a shoulder charge since the last rule change been charged by the NRL? (Of those that were penalised on the field)

If not, why not and can those same reasons apply for Slater?

A legal tackle wouldn't have stopped the try - so Slater used the only tackle that could - a 'charging' tackle, leading with his 'shoulder'. The angle of approach or the inherent danger have absolutely nothing to do with it. Neither does him 'bracing' ( of course you brace before a collision). The argument Storm will make, I assume, is that his right arm got there simultaneously. But really his right arm was just pushing to assist the shoulder, and it didn't connect. All in all it was a brilliant f**king tackle. It just wan't a legal one according to the rules as they stand. Nobody complained about the penalty when it was blown.
Should have been binned.

Should he be suspended? Absolutely.
Will he get suspended?
Not a chance.

After Hodges a couple of years ago it’s obvious they’ll do anything to get their favourites to play, regardless of what they’ve done.
Hodges actually had a defence which was totally disgraceful but still technically was able to be held up in the judiciary - as I recall Aiden Guerra went in there and took full responsibility for the tackle and said he put himself in that position on purpose to milk a penalty. What's Billy going to make Feki do? Go in there and say he used his psychic powers to make Slater shoulder charge him? If they let Slater off, it would be a absolute disgrace the likes we've never seen in the game, not in the last decade atleast.

I like how Johns was the first one to make a big deal out of it but then says "he doesn't think Slater should be suspended for that hit" It's almost as he coaches the roosters havles and was thinking how much easier it would be for them to play a Storm team minus Slater, if they beat the Rabbits tomorrow night.
Oh wait....

They’ll let him off no doubt in my mind.

Honestly I don’t think it was that bad a tackle and based on the tackle alone I don’t think it warrants a suspension, especially for a Grand Final. But precedent dictates that a suspension has to occur.

They spent 50mins talking about if he’d miss the final and seemed to forget there was actually a game on. How did we end up with the C team on Fox for this game?

Looks like he did something similar a few years ago in the same position, against the same team and quite possibly against the same guy! Can anyone confirm if that was Feki?

You really couldn't make this stuff up.
