"Manly won the comp this year under the same salary cap regime we were subjected to. They managed to do this because they had a group of players who were prepared to play in a competitive side for less than they were worth. Thats an indicator of a professional and well run club.

They were effective in magaing to convince players to stay and be recruited for less than market value. How did they do it? I dont know.

But this is the type of normative environment we need to create and the Issac Lukes of the world need to appreciate that we need more better than average players to make a realistic shot at the title. How do we make him appreciate that? Maybe we should ask Manly!

I'll tell you what though, it wont be me telling him to be loyal player next fan day. Some deep thought and maybe professional advice needs to be put into the exercise.

The days of the overweight CEO giving the players a lecture on loyalty and integrity are gone. We need more ingenious and scientific methods!"

The above was posted by the inimitable DaveQ, who most of the time dribbles, but this is a very coherent staement on the success of the Beagles. When you look at our club and the fall from grace recently, you can clearly see that we need to regroup and focus to achieve what is required.

The post related to Isaac Luke perhaps demanding a new contract, but gee it is a good read, well done DaveQ, who probably is a closet Eels fan as he constantly reads our forum and lives at Quakers Hill (waits for response to that statement)

ok, steve menzies from all reports played for well under what he was worth but.....
brent kite $400k
matt orford $450k ish
jamie lyon $550k - his performance in the last two finals may justify his $$$

.....tony williams getting signed for over $150k before having played an nrl game (and he still hasn't proved he is worth that much - yet)

don't know rough $$$ figures for steve matai, steve bell, anthony watmaugh, josh perry, the cross-eyed f**kwit and jason king fit in. not to mention probable upgrades to the fat cross-eyed f**kwit and matt balin, robertson and dave williams.

not sure if that really counts as less than market value.

what about williams, l'strange, burns, ballin, robertson? all starred for them this year and without massive pay packets... good on them for finding that spark that makes people want to play for each other, rather then the dollars

i think what daveQ says is slightly wrong - they are not players joining manly for unders, they are players playing above their "market rate" salary

the parra side of 2001 did exactly this also - we had a bunch of players on the improve play above their salary .... then it all went to sh*t

manly have done well to motivate and get the players playing well - same goes for melbourne for years .... they have identified players with a bit of mongrel who will contribute to their team with the right motivation

as spidey said above - with the exception of beaver, manly has never convinced an already established player to take less than market value to go to manly and they are not retaining good players for less either

money didnt win em a premiership desire and they actually wanted to win a premiership is the difference between then and us.

our team has the talent but not the desire and this is shown in the games where you need desire to win .. we do not have it we use to have it then it went away for about 6 years and then in came back in 07 and we thought it would show up again in 08 bu it went away again ..

This whole stay for less is ridiculous. That is why it should be a points system as well based on rep jumpers, awards and games played. Discounts for long service could be built in. That way young stars would be promoted and teams couldn't stockpile rep players.

Our players simply didn't want to play and put in for each other, or the coach.

It was obvious watching the lack of commitment to goal-line defence, the lack of backing up in attack, the lack of wanting to make (decent) hit-ups or use their heads about more than one-off support plays.

Manly and Hasler created a spirit, that meant the no-name players in their squad rose to the occasion consistently, and played beyond their reputation and value.

Ours were all to a man (except maybe Reddy?) playing under their value and reputations. Not looking good for next year unless something changes - eg an announcement of our 2010 before this season starts, with the news that said new coach will be responsible for all recruitment/retention decisions during 2009....

what's more galling to the parramatta footy club is that we have won the last 4 premier league comps.

so parramatta have this outstanding pool of players coming through that are successful and know how to win a comp - and yet it does not translate to a NRL premiership.

also, if you notice the top 3 teams in the comp, they all have a coach who carry a certain persona or mannerisim which almost put the fear in players...we desperately need that at this club and Daniel Anderson comes very close to it.

Thanks Delboy, every dog has his day. I dont mind the eels.

I digress:

Last year Jason Taylor was asked what the hardest thing was about coaching and he said it was "to lift all of the players at the same time mentally."

He went onto say that individual players responded to different stimuli from others and it was his job to work out what worked and what didnt.

As we all know, one of my favourite coaches, Brian Smith considered himself a bit of an amatuer shrink.

If greed was the primary focus for players, we'd probably have the talent more evenly spread than we have now. The fact that we dont suggests that there are a number of players out there who give some weight to other attractions.

Just some of my thoughts anyway...

i agree to some extent. one of the things that seemed to be a constant with our players this year was that it appeared they were playing as a group without consequences.

apart from hauraki, paulo and hayne getting dropped for game 1 hagan seemed to not want to wield the axe. it didn't matter how poor some players were on the field they appeared as if they knew they would still get picked the following week.

i agree that anderson does come across as someone who wont take any sh*t and will do what he has to do.
