Serious question

When was the last time the Roosters won a penalty count?

I seem to remember us NOT winning one during the 2009 season and I don't remember one last year and we definately HAVEN'T won one this season.

I can't remember if we won one in 2010 - we must have done, but I seem to remember us winning games against the count on a number of occasions.

So does anyone have a list of the stats and how many counts have we won over the past five years?

I remember us winning a few in 2010, but I'll let smarter people actually confirm if that was the case.

I think it was 2009 or 2010 where Wally from The Wall (fox sports statistician) have the yearly percentages of penalty count wins and only one year - 2004 or 2005 iirc - we won more penalty counts than we lost, 55% I believe. During the 2000-04 it was mostly 40% and in the baron run it was around 20-30% each year.

During 2009 there was a stat where we'd won 5 penalty counts in 3 years. Doesn't answer your question though lol

2010 showed the greatest example that winning the penalty count is deceptive.

When we played the scabs at home we win it 6-5. Every single point they scored - 2 tries, 1 penalty goal - was off the back of a penalty. We had 1 penalty out of 6 all night inside their own half which was obviously in the dying minutes and we scored.

How many you get is irrelevant these it's where and when you get them. We had a few first tackle, inside our 20 penalties and that gives no advantage. They scored their try to go infront kicking from half way on 3rd or 4th tackle.

We won the penalty count 7-5 against Canberra in round 3.

I know.... I couldn't believe it either.

The penalty count is misleading because we never get the penalty when it's warranted but if we look the wrong way we get penalised. The counts are often inflated because when the game is lost, usually in the last 15 minutes we get a stack of meaningless penalties to show it wasnt as bad as we believe.

I have a good recollection of roosters games from the late 90’s onwards and we have always had problems winning the penalty counts. Don’t suggest it is a stitch up to opposition fans though because they attribute it to “discipline” and “ruck dominance”.

Most of the penalties against are warranted, it is the lack of penalties received which is baffling. Teams just magically become more disciplined when they play the roosters.

TT is right though, it is also about when we receive our penalties. You can be sure that buy the end of the game we are only 1-4 penalties behind the opposition but we get about 50% of them in the last 15 minutes when the game is either won or lost.

I understand it's not just the count that is important - rather the timing and placement of the penalties given, but I just couldn't remember us actually winning one for f**king ages.

OK - so we won the Raiders one. In fairness to the refs though, they would have penalised us more if we hadn't dropped the ball so often in that game. We merely stopped them having to penalise us by doing it to ourselves.

Considering the law of averages - it leaves me completely stumped that a team (us) can go 60 odd games and we can count the number of games where we actually won the penalty count on one hand. Even allowing for the penalties you get to even up the counts, we still lost the vast majority. Is there another club in the NRL that has a similar record?

Also as mentioned by others - its beyond belief that there are teams that give away 7 or 8 penalties every single game against other clubs and against us they suddenly give away 3.

I'd like to ask Jaimee Rogers what the f**king odds of that are?

Cool thread, highlighting a long established culture of onfield discipline issues within the club.

Something to work on i suppose
