I'd like to know the last time Brian Smith played a three-quarter on the bench. Gidley to hooker would be a real wild card. Can't see it myself, but I guess you never know. Imho Johns would be more likely to end up there in a squeeze than Gidley.

Won't Brown be coming off the bench? He fills the hooker role OK to give Quigley a rest, why not Seu Seu?

Brown is no certainty to make the 17. Obviously would fill the replacement hooker role if he gets selected.

Johns won't come off unless he's injured or the game is in the bag. Smithy won't waste a bench spot for those contingencies. If it's necessary for Gidley to go to five-eighth I see Thaiday or Doogs dropping back to fullback and say Abraham covering in the centres. Remember this would only be to cover injury, or if the game is already won. On Abes profile on the official site it suggests he can fill a hole in the backline if needed. Don't know who wrote the profiles, but I assume they have at least some info from inside the camp (despite what some people have said about the complimentary description of Tanner).

Didn't know Smithy confirmed Seu Seu as a starter. Did you actually see the interview? I assumed he just affirmed that he would be in the 17?... Antonius... ?
Smith said in the interview Seu Seu will start the game. If he has to come there are options on the field to cover him, but I think he'll play the 80. Quigley wont be on the bench as he has a niggling ankle injury according to todays paper.

If Seu Seu has grown up playing in the backline (fullback/centre/wing) then he would be used to playing the full 80 minutes.

A hooker's role is alot more demanding than that of an outside back though.

The problem we have now that Seu Seu has been fast tracked through the grades is that we'll have more trouble keeping him in our playing ranks. Buderus would have at least another 3 seasons left in him yet, and that is a long time to be waiting around in premier league.

If Seu Seu really does have this much potential then Smith will have to look at a way of keeping him in the club when others come knocking. One obvious choice is to have him on the bench and to bring him on for ~30 minutes each game. This will allow Buderus to have a rest (he isn't getting any younger...), and will also have him available to cover positions in the backline if injury strikes mid-game.
Seu Seu was quoted in one of the papers as saying he is off contract this year, and hopes that he can get a two year deal with the Knights this year. Smith said in todays paper "he can really play that boy" so you can bet he'll do all he can to retain him.Seu Seu has also said he is happy to be Buderus understudy, and keep learning.

It's not his next contract that I'm worrying about:D. All juniors are happy to serve their time as understudy learning from the best. But there will come a time when Seu Seu will want to step out from the shadow and be recognised as something other than "Buderus' understudy". Buderus just turned 29, so we can guess that he'll want to play on until he is 32 (or maybe even longer). That is four seasons where Seu Seu will have an extremely hard job in ousting the incumbent hooker, and in all likelihood the captain of the club.

I just hope that he doesn't turn into another junior that we invest a lot of time and money in, only to have him walk out on the club to further his career. If his future is as a hooker, we need to ensure that he remains interested in Newcastle long enough to hang around in the post-Buderus days.

What age was Bedsy when he started playing FG full-time?

I know he debuted in '97 at age 19 (ironically same age as Seu Seu debuted).

It all depends on whether Seu Seu can wait another 3-4 years for Bedsy to retire. He will be 23-24 by then.

I'm guessing it would have been during the '98 season when Lee Jackson went out of favour.

I doubt Smith would have a bloke of Thiaday's stature on the bench permanently.

In that Seu Seu article about him shining in the dark, he talks about wanting to pick up another contract for the next 3 years or so, so he can learn from the best in Buderus.

Like I said, it's not getting him to sign the next contract that I worry about. Hypothetically, if Seu Seu gets his wish and signs a new 2 year deal which will see him at the club until 2009, Buderus will still have at least another year to go before he hangs up his boots (will be 32 in 2010). Knights management and Smith need to come up with some way to keep Seu Seu at the club until his time comes.

Um...they could try signing him?

So Seu Seu will happily ignore all of the other clubs chasing him with offers of more money and a permanent fixture at hooker just so he can continue to be Buderus' understudy and play off the bench? I think not.

The Knights are going to have to fight hard to keep Seu Seu at the club in the post-Buderus era.

TERENCE Seu Seu consider yourself seen.

The 19-year-old hooker who couldn't even break into NSW Premier League last season is set win a spot in Newcastle's NRL side for the opening round clash against the Bulldogs after starring in the Knights' trial wins over Penrith and Cronulla.
With NSW and Test rake Danny Buderus suspended and regular replacement Luke Quigley picking up an ankle injury last night which could sideline him for two weeks, Newcastle coach Brian Smith said Seu Seu's blinding performances had earned him an NRL debut.

"Terence Seu Seu has played himself into first grade I can tell you that right now," said Smith. "He is a player that boy."

A stunned Seu Seu was speechless after hearing Smith's accolade, but quickly put pressure back on the new coach and urged him to hurry up and finalise the teenager's contract negotiations.

Seu Seu is off contract this season and although he knows he'll be second-choice hooker behind Buderus, he is desperately keen to stick around and learn from the best.

"That's good news, I have been waiting for him to sign me during the week too," said Seu Seu when told of Smith's compliment. "I come off contract this year and hope to sign up for another couple of years.

"I played Jersey Flegg all last year, didn't play Premier League because I couldn't get a crack but I've got a chance at first grade this year and I'm taking it with both hands.

"Danny is the number one, he is the one I look up to and watch videos on him. (Buderus) is the best, anytime you get to work with the best you can't give up that opportunity.

"I want to learn from the best and get some more experience. Anything he says goes for me."

Smith said Seu Seu wasn't the only youngster likely to make his debut this season, with the veteran coach prepared to tinker with his lineup until he gets the mix right.

The former Eels boss was delighted with wingers Akuila Uate and James McManus against the Sharks, and said he would continue to trial players in various positions in the regular season.

"We've got some sorting out to do between now and playing the Bulldogs in a fortnight," he said. "We are still sloppy and have got a truckload of improvement in us. We've got to find some better ways of structuring and performing in attack. That was a bit embarrassing at times there tonight.

"We have got to find our right crew to start with. Whatever it is to start with it ain't going to be the same within two or three weeks you can bet your life. We'll use a lot of players in the first month or six weeks.

-Sounds like these quotes are from the NBN interviews... antonius... ?

-First bold citation -- an enormous wrap from someone like Smithy after only a couple of first grade trials.

-Second bold citation -- sounds like Smithy has anything but set in concrete his approach to the contentious issues like fullback and so forth. I've seen this sort of thing for him in the past. He will tweak for the first 4-to-6 weeks (both in personnel and positions) in order to get the combination right. If it means sacrificing cohesion or even a game or two early, it's a small price to pay for hitting on the best possible line-up for the rest of the year.

That's what Seu Seu said he wanted... to be Bedsy's understudy and cover him with rep commitments.

So sign him to a 4-year deal like they have Mullen and Uate (OK Uate was 3 years) and let him play in PL or off the bench until he gets his opportunity.

It isn't like he doesn't want to remain at the club.

Maybe I'm being overly pessimistic here, but I can't see Seu Seu being offered anywhere near a 4-year deal (he hasn't even played a game in PL or FG yet). Even if one was offered, he would be crazy to accept it considering it would likely be very under-valued.

I can understand him being excited at the prospect of learning all of the tricks of the trade from Buderus over the next 3 seasons (based on the assumption that he does get a 2 year deal like he is after), but it wouldn't take much for that excitement to turn to frustration. In 3 years when it comes time to renegotiate his contract, he could very well have learned as much as he possibly can from Buderus, but still be sitting on the bench or in PL each week. With several clubs liekly to be chasing his services with big offers and promises of not having to share hooking duties with other players, he will have a very tough decision to make.
