TWENTY-four years after opening, the Sydney Football Stadium is getting a new name.

The venue will now be called the Allianz Stadium following a partnership with the insurance company announced on Wednesday.

Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) Trust Chief Executive Jamie Barkley said the move would help fund venue upgrades and live concerts at the stadium.

"The Trust will now accelerate plans to upgrade facilities for the benefit of fans," Mr Barkley said in a statement.

"Allianz Stadium will offer a new dining level and food court on level three with works already underway in the Nick Shehadie Stand to provide improved facilities."

What's the life span of a stadium I wonder? 40-50years before major redesign and refurb?

Hmm. A stone's throw from the heart of Sydney's Jewish community in the eastern suburbs. I wonder what the Holocaust descendants think of this change? New Yorkers lobbied against it...

Football fans and Jewish groups had responded with fury when they learned Allianz was on the short list of companies offering to pay up to $30 million to have their name on the new field.
The German company insured Adolf Hitler's engineers at the Auschwitz death camp, had a chief executive in his cabinet and allegedly refused to pay off life insurance policies to Jews during the Holocaust.

Is it just me or is that article implying that this is the first time the SFS will not be called the SFS??

It was called Aussie stadium for about 5-6 years

Probably the same as they think about VW, Ford, Hugo Boss and the multitude of other companies that were in bed with Hitler.

Still SFS to me.

I get sick of these name changes. Half the time you don't even know where they are playing!

They should keep the real name and just stick the sponsor in front ie Alianz SFS or ANZ Olympic stadium.

HKR recently got a stadium sponsor name for the first time ever but wisely they kept the historic Craven Park name and it is now called MS3 Craven Park.

Funny. I never hear of the SCG getting a naming rights sponsorships and yet the SCG is the one getting all the upgrades.

Wow, the SFS gets a new food court. What a joke.

At one point it was Aussie Stadium and Stadium Australia both in the same city.

Then we had ANZ Stadium used to be the name of the Broncos old home and then within 5 or so years it was the name of a Sydney stadium.

Short story - the more this happens, the less impact sponsoring a stadium has, baffles me as to who could justify doing it.

When Homebush changed their name to ANZ I was looking through the draw wondering why the hell Parra were playing 4 matches in Brisbane that year.

Then you had Stadium Australia (Homebush) and Aussie Stadium (SFS) a few years back. Not realising the name change I went to Homebush to go and see the pre season league 7's tournament I think and realised I was at the wrong ground.

I'll stick with calling it the SFS thanks.
