Maiava signs with Sharks

6 July 2004

Bulldogs prop Hutch Maiava has signed a two-year deal to play with the Cronulla Sutherland club.

Maiava will join the Sharks at the conclusion of the 2004 season.

The 112kg prop arrived at the Bulldogs as a 27-year-old in 2003 weighing 144kgs but through a concerted fitness and training regime is now a more mobile weight.

He has been a potent attacking weapon for the Bulldogs when used in the top grade.

Sharks general manager Steve Rogers confirmed the signing on Tuesday.

“Hutch is coming to the Sharks looking for an opportunity to play regular NRL football,” Rogers said.

“He’s worked very hard to get to the level of play and the level of fitness he is at now and alongside of Jason Stevens and Danny Nutley we see an opportunity for him to become one of our top three props.”

Maiava made his NRL debut in 2004 after moving to Sydney from the Mangere East club in Auckland, New Zealand.

In other signing news, the Sharks have also announced the addition of giant young Warriors centre/winger Vince Mellars to the 2004 squad.

Mellars, at 190cm, 108kgs and just 20 years of age, arrives at the Sharks tomorrow and has been contracted to play out the remainder of the 2004 season, as well as 2005, with the Cronulla club.

Mellars will be considered for the Sharks Premier League side this weekend pending a fitness examination upon arrival.

He made his NRL debut for the Warriors in a round 13 match against the Sharks in 2003, a game where he crossed for a try in his sides win on the day.

Also bolstering the depth of the Sharks this season will be front rowers Brett O’Farrell, formerly of Souths and the Melbourne Storm and Marty Oborn who has been playing in the Jim Beam Cup for Ourimbah.

O’Farrell played for the Sharks last week in Premier League against Newcastle, while Oborn, a rugged 23-year-old front row/second rower who originally hails from Orange, is expected to make his debut in Sharks colours in the Premier League match this weekend.

Still no news on Covell :?

Beattie in union?!?!?!

Bird would go alright in Union though I must say. Sully would have been gold in a 10 if he had a better kicking game.
