2007 “The year of the Shark”

With the 2007 AMNRL season rapidly approaching could this truly be “the year of the shark”. My personal belief is yes. I also believe this can be the year that the Sharks, the only remaining original AMNRL team, the proverbial sleeping giants, the always bridesmaids never brides Sharks of old can wipe the slate clean and become the force that they always should have been.

Lets begin with the organization on a whole. This year the Sharks have paid more attention than normal to club structure. With the Sharks annual general meeting just two weeks ago they now sit on a sound structure to build a steady platform and go onward and upward.

The Sharks financial state: With the financial plans and fundraising that the Sharks have put in place we as a team stand to be financially stable for years to come. With a “beef and beer” set for Friday May 11th and in advanced stages of organization, should be one hell of a season kick off party and will hopefully be an annual event. The Sharks also have a sound personal sponsorship plan in place that should be beneficial to both team and sponsors together.

So we come to the team for 2007 and what a team this promises to be. Lets start with the regulars or should we call them the irregulars for reasons best un said. The seasoned vets, as they are affectionately known, look to have a major season. With Fred “The Ageless” Backhaus taking a player/coach role this year the boys have the most experienced USA International this country has produced. The likes of Justin Zadnik, Phil “Rogaine” Shipos, Sal “The Angriest Man in the AMNRL” Raniello, Jeff “The Human Sweater” Koch, Anthony “Which way to the bar” Fiorelli, Zach “All Natural” Padgett and Mike “Bad Load” Mckenzie all reaching there prime at the tender age of 28/29/ish are set to have there best years of rugby league there lives have produced and are all as hungry as ever. Backing these guys up are the bridge, the link between experience and raw youthful talent. In this group you find the guys 25/26/ish whom while every day learning they have the ability to dig deep for that tough win or turn the game on its head. Greg Mininger who returning from injury is raring to go backed up by brother Jim who says he could be in the best shape of his life come kick off. Then you have George Mette, Stephen Thompson, Red Fred and the unpredictable Chaos, all raring to go and brimming with talent. With a great group of young talent set to return to the team this year the Sharks feel safe for the future. Our youngsters were out standing last year especially when you consider that for most it was there first year playing rugby league. Ryan Sodano was solid at the back with pace to burn. Steve “Sideline” Tormey, who 12 months ago couldn’t spell rugby never mind play the game, looked well at home on the wing. Tim “my body is a temple” McCall, who had an unfortunate set back with injury, showed glimpses of the devastating runs that made him feared through u18s rugby. A defensive line never looked so solid at times with Dan McGovern, Mark Vella and Mike Boucher looking like they were born to tackle anything that moved. Finally John “Dump Truck Ass” Vella, with a side step that could send his own eyes crossed, was a real match winner at times in 06.

So what could the Sharks do to possibly improve on this I hear you ask. Well the answer is lots. With the return of Fred “Levittown (but not really)” Keonicki to bolster the forward pack and the acquisition of Brian “butthead” Boyle and Mike “beaver” Birch from the Philly fight the Sharks finally have the sizable pack that they have always been so close to producing. The fun doesn’t stop there though. With the news that Avea Suffia, ex Samoan rugby union international prop will be donning the shark in 07 and Mani Siosa returning after a year away, we could possibly have the most devastating pack in the comp. Then there’s Viasa Koroseta, arguably the fastest player in the comp, who has decided to return to give the backs a devastating burst of pace. In my opinion he makes sea biscuit look like a sea horse with no swim bladder. Then last but not least we have Chris James who has a long career as an amateur rugby union scrum half back home in Wales and is relishing the chance to show rugby league what the valleys are missing.
The Sharks are currently in talks with three quality imports to give us that touch with that international flair and probably a bad Aussie hair style to go with it.

So there you have it “the year of the shark”. If I were a betting man I would have a few bucks on this bunch in 07.

Hey Pennpool if the sharks have changed their name like the Bulls have changed their name, who is the oldest team in the AMNRL. All the Bulls have really done is changed its venue, and players are now aloud to play for them that did not work at Glen Mills Schools.

I know their are several people and players out their counting the Aston Bulls out, but I wouldn't. With the new rule changes and some of the new Bulls players the Bulls could regain that AMNRL championship they lost 2 years ago.

same field, same location, same original founder members running the club. the sharks always saw them selfs as bucks county as they never had a home base in jersey.

what are you on about with the players that dont work at the school. anyone could play for the bulls in years past or was that just another case of the bulls bending the rules as it suites them i.e number of players to be fielded in the finalS 22, (finals world wide means playoffs tomahawk) when last year the bulls fielded 29 in the semi final

PennPool, I am not sure who you are, but I know you have been in the league for some time now. As for the former Glen Mills’s team, all but one of the players on the 2006 Bulls were Glen Mills Staff. That one person was Rick Dortone, and I believe he was working part time at our golf course. Even the Australian’s that played for the Mills were paid employees of the Glen Mills School. The year before that two of Dave Nui’s relatives played for the Glen Mills Bulls. Every other player who played for the Bulls during the regular season were Glen Mills School employee’s. So please get your facts straight before you going talking about something you don’t know.

As for the Aston Bulls anybody can play for them. We have approximately 8 players currently that do not work for the school. There are also several other players who want to jump on board with the Bulls. So the Aston Bulls will not be made up of Glen Mills School employee’s

As for the number of players that could suit up for the Grand Final, I don’t believe there was a set number. The rules for the Grand Final were the following;

You could only substitute 2 players at a time
Those two players had to check in with substitute official
You could only substitute when play was stopped
All players had to stay within the marked off section

As for the 29 players that suited up for the Glen Mills Bulls I can tell you 5 of us, including me, never got in the game. As for the other 24 players who suited up in that match 5 of them saw less then 5 minutes of play.

Tomahawk,

What do you mean by new rules?

You need to get back with your team captain or whoever was at the meetting earlier in the year. There are several new rule changes that will effect all the teams. Some more then others.

rules are rules tomahawk and it clearly stated that 22 players could suite up for finals(play offs ) so weather people got 5 mins or 5 seconds the fact is that the bulls broke rules to suite them. also the fact that they change the rules to suite them bit them in the arse and lost them last years final as before kick off bulls told wildcats that bulls were suiting 29, which they did. the wild cats replied by suiting up all there foreigners which was also against league rules as they had 6 and went on to win.

fred keonicki and ryan coleman played for the bulls while not working at the school and i could probably get a better list if i think back far enough.

Guys, Guys! IT is true. All Glen Mills players have always been employeed at the school at some stage during the season that thye played for the Bulls.
As for the rule breaking there will be a much more secure check on them this year.
All teams MUST submit all the player paperwork and proof of insurance prior to ANY player taking the field.
This paperwork will be used to decide if the player is an import or not and to prove he is covered with the right insurance. The AMNRL is moving forward to becoming more professional with each step that is put in place.

Well Pennpool, its a new season. The Bucks County Sharks will be the 1st team to see what the Aston Bulls are made up of on April 21st. That is the date for a scrimmage between the two teams. We will see what both teams are made of.

As for your son remark, I am far from your son. And I hope you are at least 46 because you would have to be at least that age to be my father, and that would have only made you 16.

So April 21st we will see what each team are made of. I am kind of eager to see how our new team will be. It will be intresting.

And I bet you are one of the people who think in last years regular season match between the Glen Mills Bulls and the New Jersy Sharks that the Sharks were going to come back and beat the Bulls. The game was called due to heavy rain and lightning.

LOL, but I can say that I have played in 2 Grand Finals, and have been on two AMNRL Championship teams.

pennpool have a couple questions for you;

How many Grand Finals have you been in?

How many AMNRL Championship teams have you been on?

Have you ever drank out of the C. D. Ferrainola Cup?

As for me I will tell you this I will play for the Aston Bulls this year. I will get playing time, and I really do not care if I get on the field for 5 minutes or 80 minutes, I am part of the TEAM. I know I am not the best player out there, but go out and have fun and give my 100% each time. Oh yea I forgot to mention I play on a team that is made up of more then 10 Tomahawk players. What other team in the AMNRL has more players on their roster that play for the Tomahawks then do the Aston Bulls? And I list some of them for you;

Cory Sheridan, Chris Craig, Rick dortone, Kevin Deal, Vassy, Nuiey, Shayne Mains, Ed Woodbridge, Joe Becker, Mike Edwards, Matt Shannon, and Eric Hollingsworth. There are 12.

Play some footy said:
The two of you are embarrassing yourselves and your teams.

What a joke.

We don't want to talk about embarrassing your team and yourself. Because no one on the Wildcats has any room to talk about embarrassing their team, themself, and the league.

We don't want to go there.

Benchwarmer, who are you kidding? What are these cheapshots against the Premiers?

Also the only reason you get to play is cause your teeam suits up 30 players..., you are number 30. If they suited up 35, You'd be 35. One day there is only going to be 17 guys suited up (The real way RL is played) and you'll be SOL.

You should write a book about getting splinters out of your @$$, cause we all know your more knowledgable about that than Rugby League.

Let me ask you a serious question, now that you guys wont have the school behind you and you can only train twice a week, how on earth do you think you can improve from last year?

Also the core of your team is on the wrong side of 30..., please refrain from telling me about all the awesome bulls players that have at one point put on a Tomahawk jersey 5-7 years ago. We can do with out that.
