Sharks circle Dykes
By James Hooper
July 23, 2004

UNSETTLED Parramatta five-eighth Adam Dykes may be lured home to the Sharks next season after Cronulla tabled him an offer to return to the shire.

Sharks chief executive Steve Rogers is confident Dykes will walk away from the final year of his deal with the Eels to accept a new three-year contract under Stuart Raper.

For the move to happen, Parramatta chief executive Denis Fitzgerald must agree to the terms of release on the remaining 12 months of Dykes' current deal.

Dykes, 27, has experienced another mixed season with the Eels - he was dumped to Premier League at one stage - and appears uncomfortable at Parramatta.

"I'm pretty confident it's going to happen. It's just a matter of when," Rogers said.

"I was disappointed to lose Adam in the first place. It would be great to get him back again.

"If he gets back to the kind of form we know he's capable of he could prove a real asset.

"I've done everything I can at my end. I can't contract him because obviously he's still at Parramatta.

"We've had discussions with his management and should he be released he'll be returning to the Sharks."

Parramatta football manager Tony Zappia admitted last night that Dykes was interested in returning to the Sharks but said the deal was a long way from being finalised.

Parramatta claim they are waiting for details of the release to be formally tabled by player manager George Mimis, who handles the negotiating for Dykes.

Mimis has confirmed the offer from the Sharks and is in the process of working through fair conditions of release with Parramatta.

"We've had discussions with the Parramatta club in relation to a potential release," Mimis said.

"If the opportunity for Adam to go home to the Sharks in the right circumstances arose he would consider that as an opportunity."

Dykes joined the Eels from the Sharks at the end of season 2001 when he was regarded among rugby league's elite playmakers.

He won the 2001 Dally M five-eighth of the year award after his most consistent season.

Since linking with Parramatta his form has fluctuated.

He has struggled to regularly reach the level of consistency previously displayed in the shire.

Player manager Mimis said he hoped to have the issue resolved by the end of next week.

The Daily Telegraph

Could they be waiting on what happens with McLinden as per booligal bill's rumour?

like I said before, I think they are negotiating with some one else, with Dykes money.

Once they close in, Dykes is outta here  , which is fine with me

in his time here he has been a very expensive bench warmer, as well as being dropped.

doesn't matter how good he is if he doesn't get on the field.

The scoop on channel 10 last night, was that he is off.

But they don't always get it right.

Looks like it won't be confirmed this weekend then...

Reads very much like this is Dykes' choice, rather than the other way around? (That is, it seems to be driven by Rogers and the player-manager, since Parra are waiting for the details to even be tabled.)

Hopefully Denis does what he can to ensure the "fair release conditions" are more than fair for Parramatta - hopefully Sharks paying his whole contract? 8) If this release is Dykes' choice, perhaps Denis can haggle a bit on this to get the desired result for the club...

If the Sharks are so desperate to have him back, then I say they should be forced to payout his entire contract, instead of hoping that Parramatta will pay a significant portion. Either that or Dykes signs for them on a reduced deal, I don't see why Parramatta should pay him anything if he wants to go and the Sharks want him.

Well, at least us paying Cronulla to take him isn't true.

And I reiterate, unless we can replace him with an equal or superior player, there's no point. Ultimately, Parra have the choice.

Kurt Gidley resigned with the Knights, didn't he?

I think there is an ulterior motive behind the scenes - surely we are looking at a 5/8 from somewhere. The club has plenty of halfbacks but aside from Morris no real option at 6. Mateo could be an option but I think he will be suited to lock but who knows?

"... is confident Dykes will walk away."

Excellent choice of words there.

Obviously this imbecile of a journalsit does not seem to recall the whole Lyon saga.

Anyway, if the guy is willing to do a Walker and then go to the Sharks, then Cronulla should have to pay out his full contract AND we should get to break one of his fingers.

Could be, but then again why? There is a trend in some clubs - inspired by Joey Johns role with NSW last year - to have the half as sole playmaker. It's what we use when Wagon is 5/8. In reality, it makes the hooker and half our playmakers - the hooker organises the forwards and the ruck, and field position kicking, while the half does the backs, wide forwards and kicking close to the line. The traditional 5/8 role of running across the defensive line looking for holes for the backs, is now done by a straighter running backrower, using their strength to create them -eg Hindy, Tallis etc.

Fittler plays as much a wide runing backrowers role as he does a 5/8. Lockeyer is more a half - the play revolves around him rather than Casey Maguire.

Smith has earmarked Morris as 5/8 - something I'm not to flash on because Morris is not a classical 5/8. However, he has ball skills, and a very good boot. I suspect that he has duplicate skills to Witt, so maybe Smith's plan is to extend the 'ability' of our playmeker by having 2 of them operating either side of the ruck.

IF we get a new 5/8, they should be either of a standard that Witt would not have the playmaker pressure on him, or somehow sompliment him. IU don't think Witt has the ability to be our playmeker just yet -I'd love to see more variety from his kicking game, and less bloody out-on-the-full kick offs!

Colonel is right. Even with Morris, if we lose Dykes wse are short on 5/8s. Dykes is a 5/8, and that's why I'm baffled that Smith hasn't used Dykes (6) and Witt (7) yet, when together they were so promising in a few games late last year.

Yet, if we keep Dykes and do just that, what happens to Morris????

I know one thing, though. I used to think Lockyer played 5/8 anyway, but with him actually there, geez they can throw the ball around. Parra have not got that ability, and I'd give HJ's diaphragm to see 'em with it!

My question would be what happens to Wagon. ;-)

Morrison is a lock or at least better suited as he is a ball player as well as a ball carrier. If Dykes is retained I'd see Morris in the 9 and Riddell in 12. He plays there in the second half more often than not for the Dragons and is hefty enough to play there long term.

Smith did use Dykes (6) and Witt (7) against Newcastle in Round 13 when we won in the dying seconds. Unfortunately, Witt got suspended for 2 weeks and Dykes did his ribs the game before Witt came back from suspension.

I stand corrected, Parraren. I also recall it was our kicking game, notably a Dykes pearler for Luke Burt, that got us home. It was also the first game that Burt shone for us this year.

Actually I think Witty was (6) & Dykes (7) in that game but same difference really.

Dykes kicking game has saved our ar$es a few times this year and it is something we might miss next year if he goes. Although I remember last year we scored alot of tries off kicks from Witt & Morris when they played in the halves together so hopefully they can get that combination going again.

I think Dykes will be a loss, but a loss we can certainly overcome. I think if Morris & Witt get a full off season of work together we will see a very solid combination next year. By that stage Witt will have about 1 and a half seasons of First Grade under his belt so his confidence and maturity will be much improved. We will also have more ball playing potential in the forwards next year with Riddell, Morrison & Cayless all being very skilled so this will take alot of pressure off the halves to create all the attacking plays.

Luke Burt was on fire in the the early games, most notably against Brisbane and Newcastle, when he was playing fullback, kicking goals, scoring tries and making great breaks!!!!!!!

what gives?

Parra don't need players that put in half-hearted efforts for our great club. Just go.. heck, i'll even fill your tank with petrol for free!!

True Eel, Luke Burt was never on fire at fullback. He survived, and never matched what McKinnon has done.

Misty

nothing personal at all.....but he "was" on fire at fullback, particularly in attack and even came up with a couple of good defensive plays (occasionally)

he was scoring tries and running off the forwards (particularly Cayless) and even had Peter Badel or someone in Big League write an article about him being on fire and regaining some of the form he ahd shown in the past and and perhaps living up to his potential!!!!!!!

were you watching those early games or not????

and McClinden has been about the only bright thing for Canberra lately, scoring tries and setting up tries....scored a good try against the Panthers before they got flogged the other night

and Morris wants to be a starter, so perhaps if McClinden cam over he would bew 5/8 and Witt half and unfortunately Morris in PJ's old role on the bench at hooker with Piggy......

or.......BS might play him at halfback....cause when he came to Parra i actually hoped he might play halfback cause he filled in there well for Johns at the Knights on quite a few occasions and i think he could play half very well

but it woul mean that Witt would be brushed.....again so it won't be anything new
