Folks below is our press release to help us save our ground. Any of you who have been to Leichhardt will know what fantastic and historic ground it is we'd love the support of our fellow league fans.. Please visit www.stoptherot.org and download and send the petition (it's free post) thanks in advance of your anticipated support.

Stop the rot!
SAVE LEICHHARDT OVAL!
23rd April 2004

Leichhardt Oval has been the Tigers home since 1934. There’s no better place to watch footy. But Leichhardt Oval is in urgent need of repair.
We need the Government to lend a hand.

This Sunday (25th April 04) when the Eagles take on the Tigers at Leichhardt Oval we will be launching our campaign to save Leichhardt Oval. We’ll be handing out petitions to pressure the state government to get behind us in our quest to secure Leichhardt Oval not only as a football ground but also as a community asset for many years to come.

In a game that is crying out for its traditions what better tradition is there than Sunday afternoon footy at Leichhardt oval. Please lend your support to our cause.

Please note that this is a supporter’s initiative and although both the Wests Tigers and Balmain Tigers football clubs are supporting us, the fans are driving this.

Leichardt's a hole. Why should my tax dollars go to pay for it? I've already paid for Newcastle to uprade their ground. Let's give our hard earned to the Sharks instead.

I'll send in my support. Maybe I'm the only charitable Sharks supporter on this forum. (Gee, the way you guys are carrying on, anyone would think we were talking about Oki-Jubilee)

I love Leichhardt oval - my dad's a tigers supporter, so I've been to many games there over the years.

I remember sitting at Leichhardt when my goddaughter was born, and I've always said that I want to take her to Leichhardt Oval and sit her in that chair and tell her about it in years to come.

It's also the place that I took my husband to meet my Dad and sister for the first time.

Sorry I disagree, the ground should be bulldozed for property development.

The place has had it's day!

Try getting a car parking space???

Balmain supporters are some of the most abnoxious supporters I've ever seen. Why help them??

Bite the bullet and move to Campbelltown for good!!!!!!!!

Campbelltown is a shithole
I hate travelling there
It's full of low lifes too
They should have just kept Balmain and scrapped Wests

I like the idea of the ground being upgraded but I dont know about spending tax dollars on it, the state government has already given money to Parramatta, St George and Newcastle over the past few years and I dont know if that's fair. I think they helped upgrade Campbelltown too.

yep i'm all for leichardt and all that, but i don't think i really want my tax being spent on that instead of my kids education or more nurses or making our highways safer.

i do think governments both local and state should allow clubs to make better use of their resources to generate mor eincome on a consumers free choice / user pays basis.

anyway good luck with it however it works out because i do kinda like leichardt. in fact it's the ground where we won our only trophy and thank god i was there !

I respect your right to have your opinion but pls remeber it's not just state govt $ we're after it's in the most case Leichhardt Councils that has recently put a parking metre on every bit of spare street in the council area. Leichhardt oval is their property.. Leichhardt is also please remeber the following: " Leichhardt reminds of you of what our game is about, born from the suburbs for all. It’s no coincidence then that the very first games of the NSWRL in 1908 were all played within 2kms of Leichhardt Oval. –
At Birchgrove Reserve, Balmain over-ran Wests 24-0 and Souths beat Norths 11-7, while at Wentworth Park, Newtown beat Easts 32-16 and Glebe defeated Newcastle 8-5. In the two lower grades that day there were also teams representing Enfield, Sydney and Drummoyne."
History is something you can't rebuild or replace with another high denisity unit development... But as said before I respect your opinion..

They should play out of Campbelltown full time. Are there any Rugby League fans in Leichardt any more or are they all Latte sipping yuppies?

Nice try mate we had over 14000 yesterday and a hell of a lot of locals that's an old line "latte" but not valid.... Pls this is not a Cambo V Leichhardt thing we are completely commited to the JV but just want the home games at a LO to be the best they can (as we do the ones at cambo).
Also this is not just a footy issue and upgrade would allow the local schools (that have very limited sporting facilites) etc use LO for their carnivals etc. We are taking a community approach to this.

Rif Raf,

You are barking up the wrong tree mate.

I'm a local in the area and the ground, and league in Balmain/leichardt has had it's day, sad but true.

ON any given Friday night since footy season began this year and last, 9/10 pubs in the area are showing RUGBY UNION super 12. I've been in the red lion on a ssaturday when the tigers are playing at cambletown live on fox, and they are watching union on the TV, it's sad but it's fact.

THe ground is beyond repair and as much as I love League, there is no place for spending more money on more footy grounds, we have plenty in the Sydney area, and we have white elephants sitting around too not being used.,

The Tigers must bite the bullet and either move west permanantly , or play their home games at their training park, CONCORD OVAL. a great ground, already of the correct standard for NRL, and not currently leased to anyone.

Your board are trying to make that move, it is logical, financially far more realistic, and not a waste of rate payer money in our council area, or state or fed govt taxes.

Yep, $20 million was spent on Campbelltown.

And it's still a dump

Fix Leichardt! One of the best places to watch footy - my favourite ground after Telstra Stadium. So much culture and always a great atmosphere.

To Beersh:I respect your opinion but think your drinking in the wrong pubs ;-) ... How do you feel about the 6mil spent on a quarter acre block at the end of darling st? The lazer leveling of the ground would also allow local schools (that have terrible facilites) to use the ground for carnivals etc, summer sports to use the ground.... There's alot more check out the website for more details. We are not only trying to do this just for rugby league we are very conscious of making it for the wider community as well. We are well aware that 4 to 5 games of league does not warrant that sort of spending so we are going out of our way to make it usable for the wider community .. "Your board are trying to make that move, it is logical, financially far more realistic, and not a waste of rate payer money in our council area, or state or fed govt taxes" Incorrect...."The Tigers must bite the bullet and either move west permanantly , or play their home games at their training park, CONCORD OVAL. a great ground, already of the correct standard for NRL, and not currently leased to anyone." Incorrect leased to NSWRU and has worse parking than LO..
But once again I respect your opinion.

I've never actually been there, but I'm with you guys on this. Overseas, and especially in England, there is massive amounts of money going from the government to build new stadiums. Dave Moffitt was a big believer that Aussie governments aren't giving enough to sports facilities. My tax dollars have to go somewhere, and I'd rather they go to a footy stadium than some arts program. And if its coming from the council, then its not my rates paying for it, so good luck.

One day I'd luck to think we will get some government funding for Shark Park, so I'd by hypocrit not to support the Tigers on this issue.
