I belatedly caught up with the Jets v Eels game from Saturday. Was an entertaining but slapdash affair. Jets were missing a few players, had others playing out of position (Riley Jones and Chris Vea'ila both looked uncomfortable at FB), had a very slow start (were down 16-0), got a player binned and still had a kick to tie up the game in the final minute, ultimately going down 30-28 to the second-placed Parra.

I was impressed by Sam McCulloch - tough hombre with a great work ethic. The Angel Gabrael continues to show a lot of promise and both halves had strong games.

Our ‘wild card’ is Caitlin Johnston-Green getting more and more match fit as the season unfolds.
We then end up with possibly the 2 best props in the game.

Mate, having her in the team with Ellie Johnston is nearly the equivalent of having Lazarus and Webcke in regards to presence and skill.
The platform that they can lay has the potential to get the team to the final place they want to be.
There are some issues with the halves, but they are a new combination and both young and inexperienced.
Losing Dodd for the season takes away a lot of experience in the spine. I love Brooke Anderson but she doesn't have the creativity and leadership of Dodd.
I think Chantay Kiria-Ratu has massive potential, and I've seen some real sights on it, her kicking in general play has been superb, her goal kicking need s a lot of work though.
Hannaway has been a little underwhelming this year, and she was both mine and Frenz's one to look at this season.
Emma Verran has been running the attack, and I think she is having her best season for us, she has been superb.
With Jada Taylor coming back soon there could be a ploy to put Verran back at 5/8 and have the real JT at FB.
JT and EV have a very impressive combination, they are very fluid when they play together, plus they are best mates in the team.
I have a feeling this is what is going to happen for finals time.

One of them might get a run with Cam out till mid season and if we let Uele go but another year in Jets is what they need
To me that where I see that 10-15 min role, the young guy gets them game time, you could rotate Sam & Felix so they can go back to Reggie's for the big minutes.
Depending on who we play Ford for Pollard, would be an option for the 14, Fitz will have to find someone to name in Atko's jersey

Great to see some POSITIVE analysis of the girls' game.

Yes, of course, they are not going to be as physically dominant as the blokes, but they are human beings (yes, I realise that that's ground-breaking information for some of us on the forum) who are performing at their very best.

I have a daughter and a daughter-in-law that are about that age, so I just try to imagine going to a game to support them, and how proud I'd be.

Great post mate. Agree totally that if all goes to plan having Ellie and Caitlan in the front row lays a great platform for us. And I agree also that if Jada does regain top fitness and is ready to play, she will come into FB and Verran to 6. I like Georgia Hannaway but EV is much more dangerous in that position.

I've also been impressed with Kiria-Ratu, especially her kicking game in general play. It's pretty powerful. Agree on the goal kicking but a lot of the girls have trouble kicking them from wide out.

I think our best side if all fit, is this:

Taylor
Staples (much maligned but has come good somewhat)
Penitani Gray
Lee Weekes (Biddle is a huge loss though)
Ravics
Verran
Kiria-Ratu
Johnston
Anderson
Johnston-Green
Takapautolo
Byers (named on extended bench for Warriors game so close to being back)
Holmes

King
Carter
Faulkner
Davis-Welch

I'd love to get Brooke Anderson back to her lock role - what about putting Hannaway to 9? She's quick, could scoot out of dummy half, has a good pass etc. Not saying she's a brilliant 9 but if we want Anderson to do her normal role, this could be a good fix.

You're pretty spot on there Big Fella except I don't think there is any chance of Hannaway playing hooker, mainly because of the defensive load and technique. Anderson does play hooker for the Kiwis so it's not as if she is a novice or terrible, but yeah BA's best position is lock.
And a big yes to the loss of Biddle, she is a wrecking train. I have seen some good things from Weekes, and she is really new to the game, so these matches will be good for her in the future.

Yep, definitely agree about Hannaway and yes the extra defensive load would certainly take their toll. I was just thinking outside the square a bit. Here's hoping we can beat the Wahs in NZ and then knock over the Knights and Bulldogs. Roosters in the last round might be a bit difficult unless they are minor premiers by heaps and they rest players.

Looks like Tony Herman’s been reading my posts. Hannaway starting at 9, Anderson back to lock.

Also Tyla King into 6 with Jada Taylor on the bench.

Very hard to listen as well
Ruan Sims appears to love death riding the Sharks. Reminds me of the commentating back in the 70s
