Sharks want muscle Dec 08, 2004

Cronulla Sharks coach Stuart Raper doesn’t want to see a repeat performance of the 2004 season where he believes his side were "out-muscled" in some of the most important facets of the game.
Raper called the Sharks, who finished two competition points out of the final eight, back into preseason training earlier than any of the other clubs in an effort to right the wrongs of the season gone.

"I thought we were out muscled in a lot of games last year and were beaten strength-wise within the ruck and plenty of other areas," Raper said.

"You look at the stats and we made the least line breaks of anyone else and we missed more tackles than anyone else. Physically I knew we needed to be stronger."

Raper took over from former coach Chris Anderson at the end of last season but says this will his first preseason where he is totally in charge.

The Sharks have brought back to the club two familiar faces in Adam Dykes (Parramatta) and Paul Mellor (UK Super League) as well young Bulldogs beast Hutch Maiava and Wests Tigers winger Luke Covell.

"This is – [me] and the coaching staff – what we want to do," Raper said, "and I think the staff that I've put on and the players that we've recruited and what we are going to do in the off-season is going to, hopefully, give us an advantage throughout the season."

You reckon raper knows his nuts are on the line??? I reckon they are already in the vice

Im starting to feel positive about next year.

Can Raper turn us around? It looks like he has some grand plans, so maybe he can.

I seem to remember that Daniel Smith decided the Warriors needed more strength for the 2004 season, and Brian Smith decided that Bulk was what it took to win in 2004. In saying that, our guys could probably do with some added strength and conditioning. I'd assume that Stu want more line breaking potential through explosive leg speed and not just upper body strength and size.

Having the team for a full pre-season will make a big difference IMHO.

I rate Fui. He will come good.

As for Shark bulk & muscle, what happened to that small mobile backrower thing beekershark was spruiking about

If guys like Dumas, Bailey, Gallen and Lomu can bulk up more, it will only help when they are hitting holes out wide.

If we are going to be smaller in height then most sides then we have to be stronger. Oh and have to be able to tackle!

Dykes looked to have massive arms when I saw him a few weeks back talking about 2005. Maybe me feel better about having big blokes run at him as he looked huge for Dykes.

I think you will find Stuart is after players who are strong enough to break tackles and also defend and hold down in dominate tackles which I think they will be able to commit more of. There is still a lot of speed work though.

I agree. The only forward who could dominate last year was Stevo, although Williams showed a bit too (but he's not with us anymore).

I have no qualms with making some of our boys bigger and fitter. Did anyone see the size of the Roosters and Dogs pack? No small blokes there.

And they were all fit.

Actually I think the roosters weren't physical strong in the forwards, they just outlasted everyone else conditioning wise, but dead on about the dogs.
