Sheens for ARL Coach?

Are WT kidding? Longmuir should be whacked over the head for supporting this. Let him try to fix the mess and confusion WT squad is in. If he wants to be ARL coach- stand down from WT and let someone else have a go- Teflon is obviously less than interested.

I'm in two minds about this:

an ARL job would certainly create a buzz for the players and perhaps aid in WT's chances of recruiting top-line talent in the future (I'm looking at you, Ricky Stuart)

however, I may be wrong, but WT have certainly suffered ever since Tim Sheens took over as City coach. It may have meant some WT's got city rep, but basically the team's demise has covered the same years that Sheens has been away for two weeks a year.

This may be a coincidence, or one of many factors (probably) but I agree that this team needs all his time and effort right now, and any kind of winner's satisfaction Sheens might want should come from WT - not Australia beating PNG.

Longmuir wouldn't say that Sheens shouldn't coast Australia. That's an oppressive and restrictive way of thinking. Sheens coaching City is good. It gives some of our players good experience and it's only once a year.

Oh and without being biased, I think Meninga or Hasler should get the gig for Australian coach.

2009 is a crunch year for WT- this is their own talk- eg "taps on shoulder" "expectations of better performance" etc. Teflon has to concentrate on WT this year- if he does get the job (and I dont think his record deserves a shot at it) who fills in for him? Royce???? God help us- he has failed so far to undertake his defensive coach role- do we actually reward him?????????

What fulleighty said... Good for the club as it would bring in some rep players that might otherwise overlook us, but bad for the club as it would mean Sheens' head would move further up his own arse and settle firmly in that place where his sh*t still aint stinkin'...

Bring in some rep players? According to Longmuir we are having difficulty with salary cap with existing 24 man squad let alone 25. Its got me buggered- where is the money going??????????? More players playing rep footy- good for club prestige and reputation but how could we possibly afford it?

Um... By tapping players on the shoulder?

Farming out the likes of Fulton and Collis...

Actually giving Benji '10 off so he can go play Yawnion in Japan might free up some cash.

Ok so it wont heppen overnight, but it could heppen?

Consider also, rep players get paid a match fee for each rep game, right? Is it so out of the question that some fringe rep players might play for less at club level if they are getting in good with the national coach, and picking up a few extras on the side?

Anthony Toupou anyone?

I hope so. With the deadwood / poor performers shunted out we might have some room but if we go on the current standard / value of contract negotiations and the clubs valuing of players I dont have too much hope they (WT management and recruitment) will be able to get the value they need out of the contract negboitations.

As you say- it could happen.

Id say its nrl.com, or bigpond thats modding it...WTs wouldnt pay anyone to do that, though I guess they'd contract their website out, however that works, nrl.com, saint, sharks, WTs ...all carbon copies.

Posted a couple of thoughts last night in the blog/YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE NEW WEBSITE ....bit of an experiment.

One was unfavourable of the new site, no swearing, no abuse - just some constructively critical observations.
The other was a positive congratulatory praising post.
Only one went through.

Teflon get the job, I can live with that, Royce and the Gentle one taking over now that where it all goes pear shape.

If our club was stable and one of the better clubs I would give him my blessing but the club at present is a basket case. How in the hell can the board think this can could be good for our club.

Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens has been given the Kangaroos coaching job

By Steve Jancetic
February 24, 2009 New Australian coach Tim Sheens says his longevity in the job will be determined by the Kangaroos ability to reclaim and preserve the No.1 world ranking.
Just hours after being appointed to succeed Ricky Stuart in the game's most coveted coaching role, Sheens set the bar at the highest possible level, with winning the only option.

“I don't know about every Test but you've got to win the series,'' Sheens said.

“I think the expectations are that we're the favourites, and no matter whether it's going to be in England and on tour - where that really levels you - it will be a bit like the Australian cricket team at its best, and that is you're favourites and you're going to have to live with that tag.

“The pressure's there, you've got to learn to live with that though.

“It's alright to say the other (Test) sides play well and we've been beaten before, but at the end of the day, people will be expecting as we will be expecting to win the series, to win the games that we play.

“We're all going to have to live up to that, including me.''

The last two coaches to hold the national position, Stuart and current St George Illawarra coach Wayne Bennett, both paid the ultimate price for failure.

Bennett's tenure wasn't renewed following Australia's stunning 24-0 capitulation to New Zealand in the 2005 Tri-Nations final, while Stuart's final game in charge was the Kangaroos tumultuous loss in last year's World Cup final.

While Stuart was still favoured to keep the job despite the shock loss, his post-game abuse of referee Ashley Klein eventually put paid to any chance he had of remaining in the post.

Enter Sheens, who beat off Manly's premiership-winning mentor Des Hasler and Queensland Origin coach Mal Meninga for the role.
Meninga's chances cruelled by his reluctance to give up his position with the Maroons.

Queensland's contingent on the ARL board pushed hard for Meninga to be allowed to do both roles, but their request was knocked back.

That's not to say Sheens isn't deserving of the appointment, with his four premierships and record mark of 568 first grade games as coach testament to that.

Until now Sheens' highest honour had been a short stint as NSW coach in 1991, and even he admitted he thought he may have missed the Test boat.

“Yeah, about 30 years ago,'' he said.

“Coaching your country is an honour not too many people get.

“I always say the first in anything is the thing you remember, your first premierships - with this club and with Canberra - and of course this is a first for me and it sits very, very highly.

“It's the highest honour I've been awarded in this game.''

First up for Sheens is a re-match with the Kiwis in Brisbane on May 8, when he will likely go up against his Wests Tigers five-eighth Benji Marshall.

But the veteran coach was reluctant to discuss the possible match-up.

“It's a long way away before we start talking about who's going to be playing and tactics and things,'' he said.

Sheens said he hadn't had time yet to sit down and think about things like support staff, but admitted he would lend the ear of his predecessor in an attempt to get up to speed with the national set-up.

“I guarantee the first thing I will be doing is going to (Stuart) to talk about what he thinks about the current squad,'' Sheens said.

“Without having played a game since last year, a lot of the current squad I would think would be considered.

“His thoughts would be invaluable and I'm sure he'll be more than happy to sit down and talk about it.''

Sheens call-up has left the City Origin coaching position vacant, with Hasler and the Gold Coast' Cartwright considered early favourites for the role.
So that's how he got the job then...

To be honest, I'm looking forward to seeing Karmichael Hunt an Lockyer playing in the back row, while Jamie Lyon and Anthony Tupou play in the halves.

And I bet John Morris is going to love becoming the test hooker.

The bit that annoys me is that I should be / want to be pleased- it is potentially a great rap for a coach of long standing and one who is much respected amongst his peers and players BUT by christ, the mess WT are in, the games he has played with team tactics and player selections, empty words, playing favourites, the infallibility and smug "clublike" atmosphere there just make me so despondent and despairing. I dont see any solution.
