Shines - "Sizzler could out coach all of them"

Some slightly disturbing quotes from the Super Coach in this weeks League Week. Concerned that the Defensive Guru ,Gnome of an Assistant coach is being shunted by all and sundry. Quote 2 from SHines is particularly disturbing and should put to bed any thoughts us fans had of moving super coach upstairs any time soon.

SHines Quote 1 - " Sizzler Can out coach all of them, take it from me"

Truth Rating 2/10 - Perhaps he could out coach Elliott in a Lego Building conference.

Shines Quote 2 - "If I was a cheif executive looking to hire a coach, he'd be the first man i'd go to"

Truth Rating 10/10 - THis is a real worry. The Rent a Home man Noyce has never looked so good for an extension to his contract.

Shines Quote 3 - " Sizzler has already had NRL experience at Penrith and is a better coach now he's been working here 5 years"

Truth Rating 3/10 - The Manhattan Defensive chart made famous in 1992 by Channel 9 cricket still shows plenty of tall buildings clumped together. Most between 25 and 30 ft high

Shines Quote 4 - " Sizzler was a key figure when we won the premiership against the odds in 2005 and he relates well to players, officials and media.

Trth rating 5/10 - In all seriousness the team was still very poor defensively. Ranked about 12th in 2005 from memory. I put it more down to the sheer brilliance of our 1,6,7,9 for a sustained period.

---------------------------------------------------

Sizzler Quote 1 " I would be doing the Tigers a disservice if I just turned up here every day happy to be an assistant coach"

Truth Factor 0/10 - Sizzler your lucky you get past Camp Concord security with your past convictions and track record. You would be doing us all a service if you took your witches hats down the road to The Burwood Briars 4th grade Union Sqaud.

Sizzler Quote 2 - " I probably have more responsibility then any other assistant coach in the game in that Shines allows me to run training sessions on a regular basis"

Truth Factor 5/10 - Sizzler you really should note that the 2 weeks Shines gave you most control were Round 24 and Round 25 of 2007. And in charge of all games against Penrith with your intricate memory and clip art data base on their reserve grade backrowers, theirs strengths, weaknesses, meal deal preference etc.

SO are we about to have Sizzler, our loyal and astute assistant snapped from our clutches??? 5 Years and I at yet to remember one vulture swooping on the great man, although he would be hard to see from a great height. Could this be the moment?

We can only hope the pamfas punt elliott and make a play for the prodigal son to return home. Some of those quotes are very concerning ... it's like when you hear tom cruise speak about scientology. They're deluded to f**k and actually believe the sh*t they're saying whilst the rest of the world looks on stunned at what the clowns actually believe. Perhaps shines knows sizzlers 40% record is greater than his post 1996 38%. Jesus christ the fact sizzler hasn't been thought of might just be because he's a clown whose sides can't tackle .. just a theory.

I do love the why shines goes on like he's been a roaring success. 16 weeks in 05 apart, shines has been f**king sh*t

You are, without any shadow of a doubt, the dumbest merkin on this forum.

The question I have for you dumb merkin is how many clubs would LOVE Tim Sheens as their coach?

Without you making your dumb f**k, gas induced, observations, let the fans of other clubs respond.

For one, I'm happy with JT but Sheens is lengths ahead and only a farkwit (like YOU) would attempt to argue otherwise.

But you're soufs. A coach averaging 38% or 44% is double soufs' win ratio for the last 20 yrs. *edit* Shines is a fraud and only deluded f**ks like you who read he sh*t the telegraph writes would believe the garbage about him being a supercoach. He's a pig headed f**kwit who thinks john morris is a halfback and who has had 16 good weeks in 6 seasons with the tigers. You and him are a f**king joke

It won't be really important to a lot of people on here but as far as I know, Simmonds has full control over our defence and interchange. Sheens has little to no input in these areas from what I can recall.

Raging Rabbit is obviously one of the many to fall victim to the "Tom Shines: Supercoach" myth the media likes to bang on about.

The imortant word is "RESPECTED".
A modern day coach is more like a manager than just a coach. I personally don`t agree with some of Sheens decisions, even as recent as last weekend, I still can`t understand why an obviously unwell Farah played and if he was going to play, why wasn`t a back up hooker on the bench rather than an outside back who was only ever going to get 10-15 mins of game time max ?
I rate John Morris as a very tough and durable footballer who i`d fit in my side somewhere, but like many of the self proclaimed experts that come on here, I can`t understand why Sheens has persisted with him as a halfback for so long when he is clearly uncomfortable in the role ? My impression is that he (Sheens) is stubborn and doesn`t like to admit when he makes mistakes.
In saying all of this, he is still one of the most respected people in the game and has the respect of the players that is only equalled by others such as Wayne Bennett, Craig Bellamy and Ricky Stuart. Now do you really think that the 3 coaches I have just named don`t make plenty of bad decisions themselves ??? If you`ve been watching the Broncos play this season, you`d have noticed that young Dave Taylor is an animal that has been belting opposing players every time they run at him and has played a strong part in the Broncos good early season form, yet this week he is dropped for the return of the over rated Joel Clinton. Bennett also made the call to sign Joel Clinton for just $100,000 less than what he could have retained Petero Civoniceva for. It wouldn`t have been too hard to pay the extra $100,000, keep a club legend in big Petero and squeeze that extra $100,000 out somewhere else ? Craig Bellamy obviously feels he owes the ageing Matt Geyer and despite the fact that it`s clear for all to see that Matty is past his used by date, he still selects him on the bench and usually uses him in a very unsuitable dummy half role when he comes on.
Every coach has their faults and makes mistakes, but having the full respect of your players, meaning that they are scared to do the wrong thing by the coach on and off the field means much more than a few questionable selection decisions here and there.
Player loyalty is a big issue at the moment as more and more players are wanting to play closer to their families and closer to where they were raised, hence we the reason we couldn`t do much about Scott Prince and Anthony Laffranchi leaving us. What we can do is make sure we look after all our best junior products, give them every chance to succeed and in return not have to worry about them becoming home sick and wanting to leave us. Since Sheens has been at the Wests Tigers, the one thing he has done is make all our best up and coming junior products priorities and unlike in the past, all our best local products actually want to play for the Wests Tigers. Don`t under estimate what that means to the clubs future !!!

With a few coaching gigs comming up in 2009 is Shines talking the gnome up in hope that he might fill one of the vacant postions.

Now as for our man Shines, dont doubt for one minute he has amazing knowledge of the game and probably very good at bringing kids along. I just think on a week to week thing he lets his ego get in the way of putting the best available 17 on the field. To some degree its the playing roster that wins the games and not the coaches but in saying that it the coach who puts the playing roster together and our man Shines has purchased more than his fair share of duds.

When you consider we have not picked a fair dinkum no7 for over a year, are very short on big tough aggressive forwards Sheens has done well to win the games he has.

just one thing is Sheens thinking of giving Royce the keys to the joint and moving upstairs to a director of coaching--nothing would suprise

Good post mate, he's respected by those that matter.
And as you say, no one is above error, yet plenty here want perfection - "NEWSFLASH" you'll never see it. Not here or in any team.

Hahah perfection ?
I'd settle for finals football more than once in 6 seasons to be honest
Still at least we know we the players can book their end of season trip before the school holidays start .. works out cheaper ..

fair points vicious but no matter how much respect Sheens garners from his players, a league team, like any business, should be appraised on its results. The coach undoubtedly bears a large responsible for the performance of the team.

That in mind,

1. Were the results in 2004/2006/2007/ satisfactory?
2. Were we, as supporters, expecting too much of the squad to make the top 8 in any of those years?
3. Can we apportion any blame to the coach for these repeated failures? ie as a result of selection, tactics, failure to motivate etc...

Look, respect, team morale and retention of juniors (as you say) creates stability and can lead to good results. However, where we have consistently failed in our expectations you have to wonder whether it proves any good to fall back on such notions. What do we have to show for it?

Oh well, I don't mind Sheens but I definitely think that people are justified in their criticisms considering his indifferent record AND the unwillingness of media to scrutinize his performances.
