should diving be a sin bin offence?

Hard to police.
Hard to determine.

If diving was a 10 min SB penalty, would a player/team prefer to lose an interchange, and go on with the bung on act, as opposed to being down to 12 for 10?

What if they're the victim of genuine foul play?

How do you prove they're diving? Alleged toughguy Ben Kennedy took a dive in Origin but you still had people (NSW fans admittedly) claiming it wasn't.

Just let the game go on. Used to do it in the "old" days. Pass the ball to someone else to play it or step to one side if its a defender. Being one down in the defensive line will soon get them back on their feet!

100% spot on Ink. Something with such a huge grey area quite simply couldn't be punished with a sin bin. Hell, it can't even be the reason for a penalty at the moment - so they would no doubt take that route first if they ever decided it could be policed.

No.

It wouldnt be fair having Canberra running round with only 8 players on the field every week.

to cut it out, simply don't get the video ref to have a look at the high shots, yes you will miss a few, but as they say thats football, once the video ref gets a look at it, then players are encouraged to dive. If the shot was high, the match review committee can always punish the offender accordingly.

Yes it should be.
The disgraceful diving that goes on in soccer is one of the main reasns it will never be hugely popular here. It is completely against what rugby league is all about and should therefore be against the rules and be punishable, at least by a penalty and I believe a sin binning would be a fair.
As for policing it. It should be policed in exactly the same way everything else is, in the opinion of the match officials.

Id love to see it out of the game but there is no sure way to stop it, thankfully it isnt toooooo bad with the exception of Ben Kennedy's effort in origin, if it became a regular occurance (obvious diving, not just any old high shot milking) then there should be something done to stop it, the question is what?

Milking a penalty, diving can be very hard to police whilst in the flow of the game, so it will be hard to penalize the offenders. However, the incidents should all be taken in by the match review committee to be looked at. If found guilty of the above, fine the offenders and give penalty points which stacked up give a ban or two.

Not a bad idea, or even a "name and shame" plan where repeat offenders are exposed. I imagine for a player to be known as a "serial diver" (we're talking football still ;-) ) it would be similar to a cricketer being labelled a "chucker"

Honestly guys I think our code has nothing to worry about with diving, its extremely rare

I think its because Rugby League allows a bit of biff and barge
if you've gotta worry about that, you dont go crying to the ref and trying to cheat, you worry about the guys on the other team and winning the battle of intimidation

aussie rules is the best example
if you go to a local game of aussie rules anywhere, theres plenty of biff and barge and no-one dives because they're trying to intimidate, or at least not look intimidated by, the man next to them

but at the top level (the AFL) they've stamped out the Biff. As a result its been replaced with those embarassing little yelling/chesting Tiffs and players whinging to the ref and trying to milk penalties

How will looking at video footage determine whether a player is genuinely hurt or just faking it?

There have been a number of instances over the years where I have seen players genuinely get hurt in tackles that didn't look so bad.

What do you mean by diving?

In soccer, diving refers to a player who hasn't actually been fouled. However, if a player has been fouled, even lightly, he is allowed to roll around and fake injuries all he likes.

I've never actually seen a dive in rugby league. I've seen players get hit high etc, and exaggerate their injuries. That's not really a dive and I don't see how it can be policed.

No... But the video ref should not be able to tell the ref that it should be a penalty, if someone gets hit high and the ref misses it, well bad luck.
