Should jnr rego's be free?

This is something I find really interesting, as I'm working on setting up Jnrs teams here in the US and if to charge and what to charge is a big question. It's a matter of what costs you have, what cash you can use, and what the difference is.

Like any business I guess, you can't set the cost so it is prohibitive to new customers, especially when it is a new product, by you have to bu sustainable and have an income that will allow you to grow.

My club Bondi united just put up its rego from $60 to $100. Kids get a jersey, shorts and sox to keep plus a hoodie and a roosters membership. The committee did some research and found that even at $100 RL was markedly cheaper than union ($200) soccer (200 to 300), basketball (180 for half a year) and others.

We do play in the souths comp and "compete" with those clubs who offer free rego, as has been said.

I guess that's not too bad, especially when you throw in the membership.

I actually played in the Easts juniors in the '80's and it was always free (even up to U19's). We got all of the above as a part of that, apart from the membership of course, but we did get a junior pass allowing you into any game throughout the year.

IMO it would be great if all juniors were able to play for free...at least up to U12's etc.

Playing opens this year in Brisbane, sign on $150 and then $10 a game we get jersey at end of the year depending how commited you are.

Jnr's are $110 for 1 child, $200 for 2 children then $60 for each extra and no game fees for juniors.

You get Club shirt, yearbook, Footy or Leagues club membership for 1 adult (I assume Leagues but it dosent say)

Yes, other codes charge even more, especially soccer. But RL regos have always been cheaper. CRL U18s pay about $86 from memory (they play in senior grades) while other age groups depend on the junior league they are a part of, and clubs can also charge what they like. Some clubs possibly charge more than the going rate while others subsidise charges to help attract kids. I think my local comp is about $60-70 give or take. So if you're paying more than $100 you're paying more than average.

From the ARLC's POV the influx of cash from the TV deal absolutely had to lead to greater subsidies for grassroots regos and also insurance for clubs and leagues. In fact it was more or less expected by everyone that it would happen. So far it hasn't in any league I am aware of. The ARLC are spending money on certain things at grassroots/development level (though it's not clear if there is a real increase in money being spent) but surely they can put something towards making it cheaper for people to play the game. Not just juniors either, but seniors as well.

Given the facts as stated in this thread - Union and Soccer are easily more expensive than league, along with other options like cricket and hockey costing more like $200-$300 (plus equipment), I'd far rather the NRL spend the money on something we're struggling with rather than something League leads the way in - maybe subsidising or providing junior memberships, training camps, use of grounds etc.

The joke is the money coming in, who does it go to ? NRL players and administrators thats who.
Nothing goes to the grass roots.
Some clubs are lucky enough to have good NRL club support like the Roosters or a great junior leagues club like Souths.
But so many especially in the country get nothing.
The salary cap should not have increased one bit and the extra money from the TV rights should have been given as grants to junior clubs.

The rego money from the bush goes towards running the clubs and comps. Not sure what the rant is about, there are no bush clubs to knock the money off.

Also how many senior comps make you pay to play? I've never heard of that.

Wests seniors comp. $200 rego if your lucky. They aren't even allowed to pay players or sell alcohol at the grounds anymore. It's no wonder the majority of players who don't get too far head out to group 6 where you get paid to play 1st grade or if you play Reggies you don't have to pay rego.

The wests comp has struggled for about 15-20 years.

Surprisingly that's when they stopped selling booze and stopped clubs charging entry fees.

And some Reggies players got paid. Majority didn't though.

I was happy playing reggies for nothing. Did play a couple of games in 1st grade a few years ago but decided not to anymore as I struggled to make training and was playing for fun.

Didn't want to prevent guys who trained all pre season and every training session during te season getting a run in 1st.

i remember rego fees for seniors being around $100 back in the early noughties when i played in the north sydney comp. fees would fluctuate depending on sponsorship

Still pretty cheap compared to other sports, Hockey for instance my cousin made the jump to AAA last season and the registration cost were $4000 that's before new equipment another $800 and with 5 tournaments, 3 of which required hotel rooms for 2-3 days

Two of the kids in my team (u13s) are dropping league for rep soccer. Rego for that is $1650 for 10 weeks.

All regos in Sydney (NSW I think) get a card which gives them access to ALL NRL club games.

Regos should never be absolutely free. There needs to be some commitment. Plus it couldn't hurt to keep the absolute dregs away where possible. Unfotunately even dole scum can afford regos but if they were free it could be even worse.

The one area the ARLC really needs to look at is regos for university students. They should not have to pay a senior fee. They should pay a subsidised rate. RL has to start attracting more students to the game otherwise in another 50 or 100 years we will still be the poor, working class game we have been forever. Uni students are the future teachers, businessmen and generally better off members of the community (once the mining boom ends) and RL needs to do what it can to get these people involved in our game, rather than soccer or union.

All people involved in junior clubs are volunteers.
