Can i ask,
When did it start to gentrify?

I only went past redfern first time about a decade ago it seemed ok then.

just goes to show.. money can't buy taste..

Supply and demand. The median price of a Sydney home is now an obscene $750,000 thanks to the drug industry (gotta do something with all that money that is simply just lying there) and Chinese buyers (Chinese government officials included) purchasing at any cost to get the property what they want.

I envisioned this median price way back in 1997....people said I was nuts.

With the exception of those who took my advice and did not flip their properties.;-)

Although the Rabbitohs left Redfern Oval for the SFS at the end of 1987, the Rabbitohs did return to play three first-grade games at Redfern Oval in 1996. Does anyone here remember any of those games, and furthermore the reason why the Rabbitohs chose to play in Redfern that year?

I was still fairly new in following RL at the time during the SL-war. My only two recollections of the Rabbitohs in 1996 was getting hammered 62-0 on Anzac Day and nearly beat Brisbane later in the season.

It must have been just a nostalgic as well as knowing only 4k max would watch reds, crushers, seagulls at the SFS going off previous years crowds.

Started happening properly in the early 2000s, but accelerated when they knocked down the old Aboriginal Housing Co properties in Everliegh St. "The Block" really doesn't exist any more. The sketchiest bit is around the Waterloo housing commission towers now. Pretty much all the terraces are being sold off and renovated.

Let's go all in.

Use the first 8 venues in the top grade in a "Back to the Burbs" round

Birchgrove Oval
Wentworth Park
Royal Agricultural Showground
Newcastle Showgrounds
Metters Sports Ground
North Sydney Oval
St.Luke's Park
Sydney Sports Ground - might need to lay down some turf, as the concrete might cause a few injuries

Looks like you've got your wishes.

Souths are doing a 'Return to Allianz' on Thursday night, vs the Broncos in Rd 25.

To be honest, I won't know what to do going back to a small suburban ground.

It's not like I can ask any Easts fans. Not many go there either.

Birchgrove Oval
Wentworth Park

Wentworth Park and Birchgrove Oval: the two oldest first-grade venues remaining from 1908

In all seriousness though, when I was studying at UTS and had exams at Wentworth Park, I always thought the area was large enough for building another stadium if you knocked down the stadium. Quite a lot of land there, and good location in the city, stone throw's walking distance from Broadway Shopping Centre. There was a proposal in the "Future Stadiums" thread to build one near Central Station where the grass-area is, but the land is too hilly.

Regarding Birchgrove Oval, love those grounds that are close to the water like WIN Stadium and the stadium in Gosford. Looks very picturesque, and amazing to think that first-grade matches used to be held there decades ago. However, it would cost way too much money to bring the ground up to NRL standard.

Back to Belmore was awesome imo. IF Redfern oval was upto it(I have no idea on the state of it) I can see a similar result.

I think Redfern can be done. If they can get portable stands and place them on the northern, southern and eastern ends, they should be able to fit around 10k. Could just be wishful thinking though.

If you are reaching to get 10k in then maybe so.

I remember the commentators used to bag the Sports ground all the time because the score board was above them and they couldn't see it.
